Skinhead is a British phenomenon. I was a skinhead Rudeboy and I was into all the old stuff but mostly Two-tone, Selector, The Specials, Madness, the Beat, Bodysnatchers and if I had a time machine I'd go back to 1980 and stay there forever, that's my heaven. God bless the true skins and the Rudeboys.
I was at school back then and we had 4 distinct groups: Ska Skins, Oi Skins, Rudeboys and Mods. The Oi Skins were Skinheads that were into Oi, Punk and harder music. Some of them were racists. The Ska Skins & Rudeboys liked the same music but looked and dressed differently.
And so the moral of this guys message is to never be ashamed of who you are ,whether its skin ,mod , rocker , punk , or whatever that's what makes Britain Great Granny 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Growing up in compton ca i was the only skinhead around and brown. I'm 37 now and still lacing up my boots. i'll get the cross looks here and there but it's all good . Skinhead till I die.
Skinhead is an attitude towards life. Above all a working class attitude. Even though I don’t look like one anymore I am still a skin deep down inside. It’s in my heart. I kept all me clothes even though they didn’t fit anymore and some I gave away to younger skins the new blood as they say. I am retired now lol. I am still the same person with the same interests as back then. If you had a older brother who dressed smart as a mod, but he in the later 60's became a hippie type (for example). He would probably still have a lot of good clothes in the house that he would no longer wear and occasionally in the shed or garage a scooter (cheap transport). Those clothes that he no longer wanted would now fit the younger brother, who may not be impressed by the hippie fashion and wanted something smarter. The original 'skinheads' did not like the music/fashion of the late 60's and wanted something new/fresh. They found it in ska/bluebeat/reggae brought in from Jamaica etc....and they married this to the look of the earlier mod style of clothes, because they simply wanted to look smart. They needed to protect these clothes whilst going out in the uk weather, but did not want to be 'new mods' or a revival. So they looked for something that did the job of a parka, but looked smarter. The most popular option was the 'crombie' style overcoat in general. So to a point its true that the mods and skinheads have a lot in common. The original 'skinheads' were more the 'rude boy' look from the 2-tone/ska revival in dress/attitude. Skinheads were mostly around cities with good transport links and cars were more popular than scooters in general , but scooter skins and scooter clubs did exist in many parts of the country. Being a mod/rude boy/skinhead/scooterist is a great way of life and if you become one, it moulds the rest of your life, for the better in my opinion. Be proud and love your country.
A man who knows the history. My brother was a Mod and I didn't buy into that scene,so in 68 when this new fashion was coming in it suited me. You are also right about the music we adopted that after the trend started, the great lie is that the movement was started by Reggae and the rude boys this not true they were just a small part of it. We lived in Hammersmith west London, brought our Records in Shepherds Bush and Brixton markets, drank in several pubs in Notting hill/ Brixton and never had any trouble in any of those locations. And it was all over by 70/71 thats when hordes of young fourteen, fifteen year olds started becoming Skinheads and that ruined it for the older guys. A lot more silly aggro, vandalism and assorted stupidity. A moment in time I'm glad I didnt miss, but you can't turn the clock back more's the pity.
