The United States Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK) is a science, education, and conservation-based advocacy for the responsible private ownership of, and trade in reptiles and amphibians. We endorse caging standards, sound husbandry, escape prevention protocols, and an integrated approach to vital conservation issues. Our goal is to facilitate cooperation between government agencies, the scientific community, and the private sector in order to produce policy proposals that will effectively address important husbandry and conservation issues. The health of these animals, public safety, and maintaining ecological integrity are our primary concerns.
We have a eastern indigo snake here in Alabama in our yard. We first saw it when the released them from a zoo. Have a blessed Sunday ❤

We definitely need to come to a common agreement on the definition of "conservation". Let's start with that!

Absolutely! Many species commonly bred, some for many generations, are constantly losing their wild habitat. It is not considered how common a species is in the pet trade, or how many thousands or tens of thousands are kept as pets, only how endangered they are in the wild. Issues with ESA need to be addressed and modernized.
Using the pet trade as a easier, economical, faster way of conservation 🤔 I've been telling people about this in my country but no one listens🥲 I support this 💯👍🏾👍🏾💯

Are there any examples of private reptile collections being used for reintroductions or any type of applied conservation?
Yes. There are tons of examples. There are private breeders who work with state agencies on the East Coast to breed and release their privately hatched diamondback terrapins. Private breeders are included in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan Program for many species. We have known keepers who have donated all offspring from threatened or endangered species to universities and other conservation research projects. Often, private keepers are the first to fully understand the husbandry and breeding, especially the hatching of tricky turtle species (i.e. diapause), and then that knowledge and research is applied to in-situ and other conservation breeding programs. And the list goes on...
