- With the help of the UAW International Union, climate organizers, and other allies, we uncovered something big in a hearing today. Under the leadership of Trump appointee Postmaster DeJoy, USPS contracted with Oshkosh Defense on a nearly $3 billion order for largely gas-powered postal trucks (despite the White House urging them to buy electric vehicles). Oshkosh has unionized warehouses equipped to handle this job in Wisconsin - but as soon as the contract was signed, they decided to move production to a non-union warehouse in South Carolina.
USPS knew that Oshkosh had pulled a bait and switch but they still announced publicly that the contract would benefit union shops. And today, Rep. AOC exposed them.
DeJoy needs to go.

The USPS board needs to get rid of DeJoy. Oshkosh moving to another state to avoid paying their workers union wages needs to be investigated for possible nullification of their (overinflated cost per vehicle) winning bid.

As soon as I saw the vehicles were made by Oshkosh of all companies, it became clear that there was some pretty dirty dealings behind their contract. Makes zero sense why this sort of vehicle would be designed by Oshkosh and not literally any other major auto company.
Obviously the design is based on protection of the mail and drivers against the thieves that’s been stealing Amazon vehicles lately.

That is one hell of a DEAL, usually, when you make a deal for a large order it costs less per vehicle. Good job, de-joy. You should be looking into Nancy and Paul Pelosi on this...they have a long history of coincidentally timed stock transactions....and Nancy gave the the USPS over $25 BILLION in additional funding in summer of 2020...the year so many mail in ballots went missing while other fraudulent ones were delivered.

I'm a letter carrier. We drive what are called LLV (long lasting vehicle) my LLV was built in 1992!
I am flabbergasted at the lack of more electric vehicles, cost for each new vehicle and the fact that the new ICE vehicles will only get .03 more MPG than current LLVs. (8.6 MPG)

The local mail carrier vehicles are NOTHING like the AM General jeep-inspired ones from my childhood. Those were 4WD and were very reliable for allowing mail carriers to attain the "swift completion of their appointed rounds". The box-like ones today? I've seen quite a few of them....being towed away!
It's a shame that AOC always has to speak to an empty House Chamber. But her real audience....we the people....sees and hears her! The postal service went to the current 4-cylinder trucks from the old 6-cylinder Jeeps to save fuel. They do save fuel but they are known to be slow and less reliable. Of course the could have given the contract to Toyota and had much more reliable vehicles but it doesn't look good for a American agency to be giving contracts to a Japanese company.
They get “towed away” because the fleet is 35 years old and are used daily.
Agreed I hope to see her become president. Hopefully sooner than later.

The old ones your talking about had about 30 percent of the storage space. One still operates at my office and someone ends up having to help the carrier almost every day because she can't fit everything she needs to deliver into it. As far as breaking down, can you name a vehicle that is driven continuously for 5-8 hours a day 6 days a week for 30+ years that doesn't need repairs?

@Hector Fontanez Because unions are designed to protect workers from company abuse. When a company doesnt like the idea of a union, it means they are at fault and dont want to be held accountable.
@Hector Fontanez I've been in the teamsters for over 10 years. They have saved me from having to deal with problems at work directly more times than i can count. I got into it working at a canning company that is very well know. It was optional to join the union since it was seasonal work and not year round. I had several issues at that job with other employees slacking. Instead of confronting them directly and causing inter employee friction, the union dealt with it and got all instances resolved.
And i'm sorry but i have no sympathy for companies that make billions yearly for treating workers badly, not giving them the overtime they deserves, or cheating them out of workmans comp when accidents take the worker out of the workforce.
I'm not saying all unions are great and do what they are designed for, but i'd rather be union than not.
Companies pay lots of money to get workers against unionizing because they cant run their business like a sweatshop.
There was another well know canning company that was non union in that area that i worked for one day at.
The bathrooms were porta pottys that they didnt clean until the end of the season(3-4 months), the "breakroom" was outside on the ground next to the porta pottys in 105 heat.
Needless to say, i'll stick with teamsters. The monthly dues are minimal.
@Hector Fontanez Well thats a tough call. If police operated the way they are supposed to then i would think a union wouldnt be needed. I support unions for workers that work for companies. Of course any union can be corrupted and ran by criminals. Look at the movie "on the waterfront" for a good example of a union ran by the mafia. To me a union is necessary for most jobs but cant have total power with no oversight.

I was wondering why if they are building 50,000 vehicles but only 10,000 would be energy efficient makes sense to them because it doesn't to me. Why do we need a defense contractor to make postal vehicles? Why are not all government vehicles like this 100% electric at this point? This would seem something any car manufacturer in the US could make and have customized to the needs of the postal service.

DeJoy needs to be prosecuted and kicked out of office. He has conflicts and has intentionally sought to delay the US postal mail which I believe is a crime. I'm not a lawyer. Shame the DOJ doesn't do anything about it.

Congress doesn't give the post office money to build these vehicles. The money comes from selling service like stamps and package delivery. The fleet is 30 years old and in desperate need. Many rural carriers still have to supply their own vehicles. All she's doing is holding up progress.
Insider trading if I ever saw it. DeJoy had prior notice of the contract he would see that was awarded and purchased their stocks. How is this not s criminal action or SEC violation. Americans need to follow who the GOP invests in stock with and buy it also?

Oshkosh is tasked with building 50,000 vehicles for $3B. As long as the vehicles meet the specs and are on time and on budget who cares where they decide to build? It's a private company. Nothing to see here.
Unions should not have anything to do with contracts
Don't they have anything more pertinent to do than trying to torpedo a long sought contract to replace obsolete vehicles. The USPS cannot control what union or non-union builds the vehicles, their only concern should be price and quality. If a company moves to another location, perhaps for more room, why should the USPS be concerned? Let the USPS worry about delivery and cost not weather or not a contractor is unionized. Are you sure the new facility will be non-union ? Are you sure the wages will be lower ? This all one big, stupid guess.
She obviously doesn't understand the logistics of setting up a facility to produce a run of vehicles. Sure, you could reuse an existing facility, but you'd basically have to gut it and start all over. It's probably cheaper to start from scratch. Seems she has a major problem with citizens being able to get jobs. If they did move to South Carolina that would bring lots of jobs, in various fields, to the area, and also boost the local economy. Sounds like another Amazon deal where all she really cares about is being able to stick her nose in business that's way above her head.

There used to be 44,000 post offices in the country. Not sure after closings if any small offices closed. 3b for 50,000 trucks? Those better be tractors with trailers. If not each post office will get one. LMAO
They only give the LLV's to the larger offices. The small rural offices require the postal carrier to purchase and retrofit their own vehicle to work out of.

Wow as a 20 usps worker I can see no one has an understanding of what a postal vehicle needs. You can’t take an existing vehicle and slap a postal sticker on it. They are right hand drive, and it’s more complicated than just moving the steering wheel over. Basically a new vehicle has to be designed and tested, then develop the machines and software for production. All these people in the comments with no understanding of manufacturing, engineering, supply chains or what it would take to produce a completely new and unique vehicle. 😮😢😮😢

Why is DeJoy still running the USPS when he should be doing time for intentionally delaying mail during the 2020 election?
DeJoy can't be removed by the president, house, or senate. He can only be removed from by the board of governors which is comprised of 9 people. I think 6 were appointed by Trump, 2 by Biden 1 predates Trump. I think 2 are up for replacement or continuation this year. Anyway it's hard to kick a Postmaster General out. It took Trump over 3 years to replace enough people to do it with Postmaster General Brennan.
It will be interesting to see what she will do in the minority.
