  • A pottery decorating technique called sprig molding allows you to create relief or applique surfaces on wheel thrown or slab built pottery by applying a press molded shape or design quickly and easily at the leather hard stage. In this pottery demonstration I will be making two leaf shapes out of clay and making a plaster sprig mold from them. I will then carve details into the sprig molds and apply them to the surface of a thrown piece to demonstrate this fascinating decorative pottery technique. This is video 3 in a 5 part series on making your own sprig molds and using them on your pots. In this video I will take you step by step through the process of removing the freshly set up plaster sprig mold from the cottle, removing our models and carving details into the leaves.

I wish the beginning part of this process was included in the video! What are those leaf molds made of? How do you get them level? Why didn't you start with a more detailed shape instead of carving it in after? What was the plaster used?
