- Join me for another awesome adventure out in the Aussie Bush. I climb into the mountains in search of snow and a place to camp. After a long day, I finally find a place where I can pitch my tent and stoke up the campfire to try and warm up. I show you some beautiful mountain scenery and some of my camping and hiking equipment as I learn what it takes to camp in a cold and snow covered environment. The Aussie bush, its a hell of a place!

Consider preparing your oatmeal pre-trip by grinding it up (in a dedicated coffee grinder) to a powder and mixing it up with some coffee whitener, then it cooks up quickly and smoothly. Add some dried fruit and it's not gruel. Deffo.
I have to say yours has become my favourite go to tramping site. I spend a lot of time in the NZ bush, exploring and enjoying nature so I appreciate the way your videos highlight your love of the land with the time you spend enjoying the sights (and letting us do the same). Thanks Phil, yes we get snow here too, mostly on the higher peaks / ranges. We get ~ 2m of snow in a good year in the Aussie Alps. I'm lucky to live only a few hours drive from the main ski resort, so spend a few days over winter skiing. Great to hear you are enjoying the channel. Cheers Erik!

Great video Erik. Snow camping is the best. No snakes, endless supply of water by melting snow and easy to dig out a flat surface for your tent. And 2 minutes noodles taste better in the snow than middle of summer. I add 2 packets of chicken noodle soup to the noodles with 500ml of water. The mix of a warm liquid and meal will keep you warm for a while when you get into your sleeping bag.

Inspiring stuff Erik. I grew up around the bush and now work the corporate grind. I have to admit your videos have taken over my evenings on a few occasions. Hope to get back to the bush one day and this makes me wonder why I ever left! Best wishes on the channel 👍

Snow country looks nice, cold wet feet are a problem, had that 1st time I went in to tthe snow

Another top video mate. Loved the cinematic shots. I’ve been wanting to snow camp for a while, so this video has got me even keener, though some of that scrub bashing looked pretty horrible. A tip when carrying the camera, get a small carabiner and attach it to your shoulder strap, then get some string and tie a small loop onto the side of the camera. That way when your not filming you can just let the camera hang off the carabiner.
Thanks Scotty! The new camera works well when I'm behind it, so can take some better landscape shots these days. Thanks for the filming tip, I'll give that a go in some more open country for sure. There is more accessible snow further south and I'm planning my next snow trip to be in more open country and with snow shoes (Although probably unlikely until next season now unfortunately).

I was worried you might lose that Fox Hat stout can! Our trick was to cover beers with snow, but stick a branch up with a sock or something as a flag. A great and different trip - one might even say stoutstanding. Thanks Erik!

These trips are exhausting and filming adds an extra pressure, but I'm still having a lot of fun, doing these trips. Why wouldn't you refrigerate things in the snow, if you have some there?
Where you started was that someone’s property you had to get permission to walk though. Just getting back into it after the bad fires down south nsw coast here. Just not sure where I can n can’t go these days. Very different info online to what I see when actually out. And national parks are taking it way to far these days of where you can and can’t camp.

New vid for my Saturday night at home, call it good! Thanks for sharing. Just stunning. Your ASOLO not Gore-Tex? Mine aren’t either but haven’t snow trekked (yet) ...SOTO fuel stove definitely more ergonomic than MSR. That said, the pressure makes me nervous too. Trangia is lovely and calm.
Gald your Saturday night is sorterd and it's definitely stunning country. My Asolo boots have a Gore-tex liner, but for what-ever reason, they were wet almost instantly in the snow. Will need to find a better option for next time. The Jetboil has pretty much replaced my Dragon Fly, but it is an awesome stove and was fun to use again. Have actually been thinking about trying to make a simple alcohol stove (whenever I can find some free time). Thanks for watching - cheers Erik

Outstanding. Curious about what kind of socks you were wearing. I’ve heard that woollen socks will still keep your feet warm, even when wet, but I suppose they still have their limitations. 😀
Thanks - I use WigWam pro hiker sock, very awesome bit of kit and they just stand up to lots of abuse. I may have had better luck with a full merino socks and I'll try those next time, but I think having wet socks in the snow is going to result in cold feet regardless. Thanks for watching

Thanks Russ! I can't tell you for sure, but I don't think you could use a bush buddy or other solid fuel stove during a fire ban. I would switch to a gas stove at those times. Cheers
Hi Erik I'm also to plan for one overnight camp with campfire but so far I know almost all area is part of or close to national park, and when I call them and ask about campfire, they told me you can have a gas burner for campfire but you CAN NOT damage any tree or animal inside the national park. so could you give some good place you can make a campfire and camp overnight, please. right also i don't have a car so if can give some place close to a train station or bus station XD thanks
It can be really hard to figure out what's allowed as the rules differ, by state, park or reserve and even within reserves and national parks. Many areas will have a plan of management that sets out what you can or can't do. I'd suggest looking at something like Google Maps to figure out which areas are accessible by public transport and then searching for the plan of management or similar to see what you can or can't do. I always do my best to understand the rules and do the right thing. Hope that helps.
Just ignore the green gestapo. Use your common sense and do not trash the place. I have allways lit a campfire but I allways camp well away from tracks.

G'day Matt - I use Backcountry Navigator Pro. A bit of a learning curve, so definitely suggest having play with it before you head out, but it hooks in to the NSW topo maps and satellite imagery so is super handy. Cheers Erik

ive done normal tracks and campsites and was interested in how you plan/navigate your trips, i want to get off the track and start finding places of my own , outside of orienteering and reading topographical maps is there anything else you could advise someone wanting to get off track?
I've been thinking about doing a video on this for a while, but am a bit hesitant about giving specific or detailed advice. Generally I'd suggest starting off small and building up your skills and experience. I started off adding in short segments of off-track walking into regular hikes, getting used to being self reliant, navigating and reading the lay of the land by following creeks and other features like ridges etc. I learnt how to navigate, mostly using GPS and maps. I plan for trips by spending a lot of time looking at maps and satellite imagery. Hope that helps.
Garmin use an app called Basecamp in conjunction with a Handheld GPS .Ive got the 64st comes with pre loaded toppo Aus n NZ maps 👍
Another great video mate i really enjoyed it, what make is your new camera? I use panasonic g series cameras myself and they don't focus very well either but I've found using the panasonic app on my phone is great for setting the focus for my talking to the camera scene's maybe that may help you also 🤔

Thanks Daryl, I'm using the G95, perfect camera except for the terrible video autofocus. Using the app to focus those shots is a great suggestion, I'll definitely give that a go. Cheers for the tip!
@@ERIKOFFTRACK yep the app works well for when I'm in front of the camera but if I can't be bothered finding out my phone I often use manual focus on the ground where I will stand and that works pretty good aswell.

Thanks Shane - been struggling to get the autofocus working on the Panasonic G95, unfortunately I think it's a tech limitation in the camera which uses contrast detection AF. I had some good results this trip, by turning continuous AF off and being far enough away from the camera.
@@ERIKOFFTRACK I had a guess that it was going to be a Panasonic camera, they are renowned for poor auto-focus - you mentioned selling it and starting over...if you do here is just a suggestion try the Fuji XT 100 with face detection autofocus at $799ish they are awesome cameras.
It's such a shame the Panasonic G95 has great IBIS, weather sealing, a flippy screen and compatibility with an amazing range of small / lightweight glass. Alas, the AF is such a let down. I was happier with the results this time around, so will persevere to see what I can squeeze out if it, but the Fuiji's are definitely on my list. Cheers
