  • Bought this big ol' horn a while back and finally got around to making something of it. I was originally gonna make very simple and plain leather straps but decided that was a bit too boring, so I did some more decorative work as well.
    Thanks for watching!

I actually really like your non weapon builds. Because with those the process is basically the same, but seeing a unique process to build something I never considered to build before is very interesting. Good job on the horn man :)

I have a tip for you. I grew up on my grandfather’s cattle ranch and one day I decided to make a powder horn. I was cutting off the scale and crud with a knife as you did, scraping with the edge of the knife. My grandfather, who grew up in the 1880s back woods northern Pennsylvania and hunted squirrels with a muzzle loading rifle (and a cow horn powder horn), saw what I was doing and said, “Let me show you something.” He broke a thick walled glass bottle (Coke I think) and with a sharp edge began to scrape the horn. The glass was much sharper and harder than the blade of my knife and the broken bottle provided more “blades” if I needed them. The job went a lot faster than if I had continued to use the knife. Grandpa had one final tip. He showed me that I could carve a little cartouche shape in the horn and with an altered bit of sharp glass very carefully shave a window in the cartouche so thin that I could easily see the level of the powder I still had in my horn. There was nothing special about the cartouche shape, it merely provided an artistic defined border and a bit of edge thickening and reinforcement for my semitransparent “window” so I didn’t accidentally poke my hunger through it.
