Thanks Laura and Dean! The discussion of the relationship between healing our relationships interpersonally and our activist work to disrupt systems of oppression is very reminiscent for me of the long standing tension within more mindfulness informed philosophies like Buddhism, sometimes accused of "navel gazing", and the more "in your face" Buddhism of the self immolating monk protesting war. It sounds like Dean also takes the position that these works, inner and outer, are not mutually exclusive, and in fact if you have a meditation practice, it's as much done for the world as for yourself (as Dean points out is so often the focus in the self help genre). I am also reminded that the first value of co-operatives per the ICA is "self help" and yet also within that list of 10 lands "caring for others." Co-ops have historically been called "self help enterprises" and yet they are also profoundly community oriented. Just goes to show, there's work to be done inside and outside. Great interview, I should definitely grab the book!

You are correct, we MUST stick together.
I also believe it is imperative that we find ways to connect with those we disagree with in order to identify what common ground exists….if only on one minor issue….and begin to demonstrate that we ARE NOT ENEMIES BUT NEIGHBORS. That is a tall order. It will be extraordinarily difficult and will require incredible discipline to stay on message when our opponents push ridiculous arguments or simply flame us for the purpose of “owning us” on the issue at hand.
