If you want to know the result without watching the video. I think this is a good VND at a reasonable price but unfortunately it doesn't work when used with a speedbooster on the BMPCC 4K. For me that's a big problem, it's not the filters fault and in many ways I like it.

I dig your style. Very well put together review. Editing is on point. Keep up the good work mate. Cheers
Thanks mate, I really appreciate you saying that.
"Sunglasses for your lens" always cracks me up... Great content, new to your channel just sub for the cool content...
Thanks for the sub, mate.
The color cast is because of the bmd's cameras weak IR CUT abilities. When I use NDs with their cameras I always also use an IR CUT. Regarding variable NDs, the solution is to have two filter sets: 1-5 stops, and 6-10 stops (Peter McKinnon's ND filters are like that). And if they could add the IR CUT ability too, all in one, even better (there are only two brands that do that I think, but they're full NDs rather that splitting in two ranges). The right variable ND set doesn't exist in the market yet, while it can be done. Also, to avoid vignetting, always buy your filters at 82mm, and then use step up rings. You never know what kind of lenses you might have in the future.
Excellent suggestions. Thank you.
If I'm using it on a 82mm lens, should I go for an even higher ring first and use step up ring?
@@JR-cp9mb No, you just use the IR CUT at 82mm, and then the nd filter at 82.
@@EugeniaLoli And if I want to use it on a 67mm Lens, can I just get a marumi 67mm - 82mm step up ring and mount on this VND set?
Without vignette of course
Love your vids, keep it coming bruv 😍😍
Thank you, mate! Will do!
I believe Nitto is the Japanese conglomerate who makes the glass.
Yeahs, they make glass for Hasselblad.
You're probably right, but the spelling of Nitto on the box is with a single T. Probably a typo on the artwork because there doesn't seem to be anything else that would fit. Thanks.
Found the same problem with my Tokina 11-20mm on either the Metabones and the Viltrox speed boosters when using an 82mm filter. Basically at the widest end, the camera is able to catch the edges of the metal frame on the filter. But if you take the filter off, you get a perfectly non-vignetted and refreshingly overexposed image. May have to use a one-step step-up ring to a 92mm to avoid that.
I stole Tiltas idea with Mirage, and use my nano focus on my VND filter and its amazingly liberating. was hard getting such a thing gear ring on there but it works nicely
That’s a great idea
IT's the sensor size and the APS-C lens you guys are using. The bmpcc 6k is a 35mm sensor (bigger) AND the tamron and tokina are NOT full frame lenses. slap a full frame lens on your 4k with the speedbooster and you'll see no vignetting
WIth that broad range ... hmm sounds very tempting. i wonder how early the X pattern shows up.
Well, 7artisans said the x will show up on the last two stops when using a wide angle lens. I’d say it starts to appear at about 6.5 stops.
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw Thats what i thought. Sometimes it is still usable it the effect is not too hard. Most of the 2-5 have a similar effect on the last 5th stop
Great review Chris!! Totally sold. What stop do you think you would need to shoot at f1.05 on apcs in daylight? Thank you
You'd probably need around 5-6 but it's almost impossible to say. Depends how bright a day it is.
Width of lens/ field of view or focal length numbers are irrelevant, what you are experiencing is differing image circle sizes for different lenses. Those lenses are made for a 1.5x crop and with a speed booster your crop is less than that, thus you see the edge of the image circle for some APSC lenses.
What you're saying may be true but I don't get any vignette or see the image circle when the VND is not attached. This only happens when adding a filter to the end of the lens.
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw That is happening because you're looking at a part of the image that you're not supposed to be seeing on an APS-C sensor, so the filter creeps into the image circle with the speedbooster.
@@GabrielFFontes That makes sense.
Nah, i am sticking to my Nisi VND Tru Color filters.
Is there a 6-9 as well as 2-5 with Nisi now?
Great video!
By the way, which speed booster do you use? I'm just about to buy a Pocket 4K with a Metabones booster myself, and I know they have a 0.71x magnification version and a 0.64x one, so maybe the stronger booster trades a higher magnification ratio for this weird vignetting issue?
I use the Ultra 0.71x because I had a lot of apsc glass. You could be on to something with your theory.
I get this dark spots as well without speed booster
Interesting, I can’t say that has happened to me.
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw I use K&F concept variable ND and it doesn't happen every time either but often enough to notice
a pity..its sold out
Random question- what knife is that you used to open the package at the start?
It’s a Kershaw Shuffle II kershaw.kaiusa.com/shuffle-ii-tanto-black-blackwash.html
Hello, does this filter have a thread in front of it so i can stack another filter on it?
Yes. You can screw another filter onto the front of it.
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw Aye, thanks i bought it today and stack my blackmist 1/4 and its amazing, i have 0 issues with vignette from lowest to highest settings
Where can I get the thick band hoody? Can't find one like that anywhere. Ivory colored wide zipper and really wide tie bands around the hoody. Put a link to that too.
😂 it’s from a company called superdry. Don’t know if they still make this style or not. www.superdry.com/us
Good video, bad filter. Variable ND filters have never been as good as set value filters. I have seen cross polarization issues all the way up to 24mm so I have returned to "Screw it on - Screw it off".
