  • This was a solid episode of The Acolyte, we got more backstory, we saw the Night sisters which was awesome! and now I am even more confused. Is Osha, Mae or the Jedi reliable narrators? There seems to be some missing pieces to the puzzle.

The jedi take children _with consent._ They have never been kidnappers. And the children are typically much younger, less likely to be the ones choosing to leave. Obi Wan was inducted at 3, and _that_ was considered old. Most of the time, the _parents_ are most likely the ones making the choice.
Mae started _a_ fire. We don’t actually see if that small fire lead to that much destruction. Something else for sure must’ve happened. With Mae implying the jedi attacked without provocation, I’m thinking the coven may have been deemed a threat and the jedi were given orders to take them out. Or at the very least shut them down and the confrontation spiraled out of control.

Yup, there is this obsession to try to make everything ambiguous so they also need to make the Jedi at least a little bad... But that's really not the case, of course the fact that they become rigid leads to their downfall but they were never not good. And also we have to keep in mind that most of these force sensitive children if they were actually powerful they would turn to the dark side during teenage years... it requires training and/or discipline to keep it in check and obviously they wouldn't have it. And even so, the Jedi don't kidnap them.

"with consent" is a gray area when it comes to jedi... they clearly didn't have consent to be on bardock or to speak to the children much less take them.... but they still used the power they have as representatives of the republic to walk in wherever they see fit and insist on testing children and then try and manipulate them into choosing to join the jedi... they had "consent" only insofar as the coven were afraid of the power of the jedi ... this is power dynamics 101

@@jimtams Yeah, this case is undoubtedly a lot sketchier. But this is one of two cases (on screen, there could be more on page) of unwanted child taking we’ve seen/heard of. And the other one isn’t all that strong because we never hear about the parents having any issue with it, only the masters of a different Force culture

Here's the thing, And mind you as an AVID OJ Star Wars fan I could literally give an entire dissertation on each aspect of what makes the original Star Wars so good but to touch base on what you were talking about around the 18:00 mark with the Jedi taking kids really enough and denying emotional attachments.
It was a way to help the children as the developed their connections to the force. Those attachments are easy points for falling to the dark side (especially as they go thru their teenage years). Luke almost fell to the Dark side more than once due to his emotions. He managed to overcome them yes but not everyone could. The reason the Jedi did that was more out of learned real situations.
If they tried taking kids when they were older they would often fall to the dark side because they were unable to let go. (like Anakin) It gave them a solid foundation to build from. To teach them as a young age how to control their emotions. Modern Star Wars writers tend to forget this and portray the Jedi as evil kidnappers. When in reality if they didn't step in these kids would most likely become mini tyrants with their powers. (or they might simply end up hurting those around them) Imagine a toddler when you take their toys or candy away and tell them its nap time. Now imagine that toddler force pushes mommy into a wall in a rage and kills her.
They are not the bad guys. They are trying to help.

I appreciate your comment. I’m not calling them the bad guys. But questioning their perspective. They are doing the same thing, in my opinion, that the Witches are doing with the children. Giving them training and helping them with their powers. But yet only the Jedi are allowed to train children? It just makes you scratch your head and think a little bit

@@ImonSnow To add on to this, in response to you comment about the Jedi training child soldiers it is important to note that similar to martial arts Jedi train for defense only. This show does a great job showing they are more defensive and fight only when provoked during this time period. The Clone Wars (at least in the movies) was a kind of turning point and truly the down fall of the Jedi as it fully put them in a full time war setting that spiraled everything out of control to their downfall being orchestrated by Palpatine. The Ahsoka series hits on some of this if you ever do a watch for that in dealing with the aftermath of her Jedi trauma. But overall yes the Jedi are arrogant and hypocritical at times but I think it goes to show the balance isn't as straight forward as we'd all like to think it is.

    • @ennuieffect
      @ennuieffect 13 дней назад +3

@@ImonSnowpart of the issue is that in this universe, the Force is in constant struggle between light and dark. The Jedi weren’t the first force users, but the first to understand how easily it can be corrupted by anger, fear, and aggression. Without harnessing the force as a power for GOOD, people like witches, Sith, and others will inevitably use the Dark Side to destroy the balance of life.
This is just a guess, but I believe the mothers here used the Dark Side to create life, like Darth Plagueis would later on. If the mothers did so, perhaps the will of the force created a balance and thus created twins. One would follow the Light, the other, the Dark. It’s clear that Mae is strong with the Dark Side, her hatred, fear, and sorrow fueling her rampage to kill those she thought wronged her… including her own sister. This episode clearly illustrated why the Jedi take force sensitive children young. Right when we first meet Mae in this episode, she displayed a need for control, for order. She hated the idea of changing her life, and wanted her sister to be exactly like her, whether or not Osha felt likewise. Osha, on the other hand, wanted freedom, saw beauty in things without fear (the poisonous tree was the prime example), and felt her destiny was not with the witches. She may have seen things and heard things that she knew were not right, but were accepted or encouraged by the coven. Perhaps the force in her was guiding her path, which may be why Osha felt uneasy around her sister who so willfully gave in to the Dark Side.

@@ImonSnow But that is not their rule, it's the Republic's ... considering the war that happened a century before. I mean we see in the clone wars that the Jedi don't go to war against the Dathomiri because they have a separate order. Anyway, this series seems to ignore even Disney's stories from this period, pretty weird.

As the Council said...Anakin was too old at 10 so I possibly see these events as a possible reason for that rule...!

  • @pamphileay

I agree with what you said. It is a good comparison of "Star Wars" and "X-Men". Xavier gave the children a choice of finding out what their abilities are. And how to manage them. I always thought it was weird for a group to take children. No matter how to try to spin it, the children were going to be taken from their parents no matter what. Choice. Whether the children use the force. Should it be up to just the Jedi? No! Imagine being a child, taken from your family, and told you no attachments! So how are the Jedi supposed to be good? They have a clinical approach to solving a problem. After watching all the "Star Wars" content, Ahsoka and a few others are the only ones who understand why the people lost faith. Question. What would have happened if the Jedi didn't come to their planet? Question. What if the people you believe in were not as good as you thought they were?

Jedi don't just snatch kids. The parents give consent and the kids themselves seem to choose to become jedi, but I do think there are circumstances where moral lines are crossed. I love the addition of the witches because it's always interesting to see different varieties of force users.

  • @oxhine

Hey, Imon! Jedi do not abduct children. The purpose of identifying Force-sensitives early is to prevent an Anakin scenario. A rogue Force-user who isn't in control of their temperament or trained in how to use their power is like an ambulatory nuke particularly if they have worldly attachments they fear losing! The Jedi do exactly what Xavier does in X-Men! There are many Force-using cultures. The Jedi don't interfere without parental consent. If the Force-using culture is using their abilities to do harm to others, then the Jedi would step in.
Headland doesn't understand this. Headland is not providing context about this witch sect or why they were exiled. Headland did not explain the Jedi presence and had Carrie-Anne Moss contradict herself several times regarding policy. Headland didn't explain why Osha thought well of the Jedi if her coven does nothing but speak ill of them. Since Headland is using "Rashomon" as a template, this incident on Brendok is probably going to be shown from multiple perspectives.
The bit about the immaculate conception is the most troubling aspect of the episode as well as its most intriguing. Coril had misgivings about the manner in which the twins were conceived even though she served as a surrogate. I would like to know how they pulled off a trick neither Darth Plagueis nor Darth Sidious were able to do! Headland is not only undermining Anakin's unique status but the Mortis Arc of "Clone Wars" as well!
The franchise isn't destroyed as we were led to believe by early critiques but this episode certainly muddied the waters to stir the pot.

Interesting that the two sister's represent light and dark aspects of the force but it would also be interesting if it has any symbolism to do with the rule of two created by Darth Bane
As I'm curious to know who Mae master is I'm hopeing either Darth Tenebrious or Plaguies (I think mae has strong attatchment issues but I would like to know mother Coral said to her on that walk)
The jedi are complicated they do allot good in galaxy but also can be massive hypocrites and morally grey at times especially when they are playing politics with the republic and yet they say do not get involved with rest of the galaxy (clearly lying there)
So the Sith do have some good fundemental different beliefs and points on the jedi
Although taking over the universe personally not a massive fan of that but I do admire the Sith for there independance and taking control of there fate/destiny and not following blindly to there idealogy like sheep that allot Jedi do (as Sith ideology/beliefs has changed allot more over centiries compared to Jedi doctrine
To quote Darth Sidious "Anikin one must study all aspects of the force not just the simple narrow minded view of the Jedi" as much of evil twisted master manipulator Sidious was I don't think he was wrong on that particular point
But I also admire the jedi for being able to control emotions so there actions are not dictatedl by there emotions but are guided by reason, compassion and logic
And the Jedi definetly feel negative emotions like pain, anger, rahe and grief like anyone else in the universe
Sidenote: I don't these force witches are related to Dathomiri witches as I'm getting the impression that there force magic is different from the Dathomiri
This coven are like night witches where Dathomiri are more necromancer witches more gothic and allot more magic relating to death

This episode is clearly Osha's point of view which explains why she doesn't see the Jedi as a bad guy. Really? How did you come to view the Jedi as such? Mae’s POV obviously thinks this but then there is the truth. Actually the Sith? Maybe the dark side is clouding Mae’s viewpoint. I don’t trust Mother Kori the horned Mom. I think she is influenced by the dark side and is messing with Mae.

Leslye Headland said she took inspiration from Roshomon which I’ve never watched but I know it’s a movie that’s known for showing different perspectives. I believe we will have an entirely separate episode to show Mae and the witches’ perspectives instead of Osha’s and the lie the Jedi created. This episode only has one title to represent Osha’s singular perspective and the lack of Mae’s perspective that we’ve gotten in the previous episodes. I think Mae wasn’t in her right state of mind when she lit the fire, she may have been controlled or it could have been an illusion entirely. We know they did something terrible, Torbin would rather take his own life than admit what they did to the council. Notice how the witches are untouched by the fire, yet they’re all dead and Sol doesn’t want Osha to get too close to the bodies.. I’m betting they were cut down by lightsabers which explains the screams. I have the most suspicions around Mother Koril and Master Indara, I feel like one of them provoked a fight and Master Indara ordered for them to be killed. I also feel like Mother Koril could’ve forced Mae to light that fire or she created an illusion, but we will see.

The Clone Wars and subsequent shows have all made efforts to dissect the shortcomings of the Jedi order. It’s a way of fleshing out how it failed as an institution and allowed the Empire to happen.
At their core the Jedi mean good but they are not infallible and I think this show is exploring that idea and examining how they can make mistakes based on misplaced certainty in their beliefs.
We’re definitely going to see that same night again from the Jedi’s perspective and what fully went down. I don’t think Mae’s fire is totally responsible for everyone’s death.

    • @ImonSnow
      @ImonSnow  13 дней назад +2

Yes it’s interesting because I picked up on this more so in the Clone Wars. I also agree that the Jedi definitely mean well, and have good intentions. I believe they did a lot of good and helped a lot of kids/people. It just reminds me of how we all think what we believe is the truth and when the government is backing your truth that would make it sort of dangerous. Everyone is flawed even the Jedi
So I am happy they are diving deeper into these topics!

There's nothing wrong with you, i thought the whole situation between the jedi and the Brendok witches was just so weird. Like when the jedi first arrives, they go "oh we didn't know this planet had any inhabitants", then why the hell are they even here to look for children to abduct? Out of all the planets within the Republic, why fly all the way out here in the middle of nowhere to find force sensitive users amongst a group of people who are about to go extinct. In the High Republic era, I would think the jedi would be in full force and not really in need of children to train, it just makes no sense that they are so desperate to take these children.

  • @erlingurhjaltason9715

based on what i interpreted i think theres more about the line "its about power and whos allowed to use it". the Mother doesnt just mean the Jedi has the unjustified power to take whatever force sensitive child away, i think theres a deeper layer about this which is implied in an eariler scene when the Mother explains their perspective of the force. the witches are denying the jedi way of mastering the force and using it by their will, they think the force should just be left alone otherwise the force user would be hooked up into the force and no longer have the control over ones destiny, and they clearly despise jedi of their way with the force

I know we have another side of this story coming to light. Mae started the fire, but I don’t believe for a second that Mae killed the witches. Something else went down. I feel like Mae had issues as a child, but having a total lapse in judgment as a kid is understandable.
Kids will say some scary things when they clearly don’t understand very much about the world.
I get sus vibes all over the Jedi, especially Sol. He looks so guilty.
I know Mae seems scary, but I think there’s more to her. She spared the shop owner in front of his child, and she’s much older.
Also the Jedi being the only legal ideology to train children is wild. Double standard. I like that we are getting different interpretations of the force. It very much parallels religion and faith, and how there are many paths to enlightenment. You might be raised to believe one way, and growing up you may question and be drawn to other ideologies/philosophies. Even down to the resentment you may feel as a child. As a kid, I remember being raised religiously felt very restrictive. I felt no freedom to question or really express myself. I get that from Osha. I’m enjoying the Acolyte so far.
