  • This was such a beautiful series! So happy that Sam from the JVS channel recommended this series to me. I felt this was a perfect way to end Shogun. Very perfectly done. Memorable characters, great dialogue and beautiful story. I will miss all of these characters

Agree that this was a great adaptation of the book, and a dramatic script based on historical events.
Anna Sawai - did an amazing job of playing Mariko. Her character was really the heart of the story. Anna deserves an Emmy, and she’ll go on to have a great career.
Was ultimately disappointed by Yabu’s betrayal, but he just did what he had been doing all along - playing both sides and it led to his downfall. Still, the actor Tadanobu Asano deserves applause for playing Yabushige the way he did.
All the actors were fantastic. Hiroyuki Sanada - perfect as Toranaga. I won’t list them all, but all deserve applause.
The ending was just as it should have been, couldn’t have been better. Too many favorite scenes to list them all. I think the entire series also deserves an Emmy. If it were released as a movie, I believe we’d be talking Oscar.

In keeping with the show throughout, this finale was both beautiful and brutal, and I'm glad we focused on having resolution or foreshadowing of what happens to each character, rather than a huge battle that essentially was over before it began! Loved hearing your thoughts and appreciated your ability to look at the deeper themes. I'll miss this show. Great job!

This show is definitely worth a rewatch. Until the second time around, I didn't realize the "why tell a dead man the future" line was originally said by Yabushige about Toranaga and that Toranaga was throwing it back in his face right before his seppuku.

Fun Historical Context: Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Battle of Sekigahara was in 1600. After he won, he gained supremacy in Japan, and in 1603 the Emperor gave him the title of Shogun.
    He died in 1616.
And John? He's based on William Adams. He lived the rest of his life in Japan, spending 20 years there. He created Western Ships for the Shogun, facilitated Japan's approval for trading factors with Netherlands and England, and then captained 4 Expeditions to Southeast Asia. He died at 55 in 1620.

Just like Yabushige I was still waiting for the "Crimson sky" to happen, but when I realized that Mariko's sacrifice was "crimson sky" I blown away by the subtlety of the writing so BEAUTIFUL.
Fuji & Blackthorne were my favorite characters, purely for their character arcs which are so in rooted to the whole culture shock thing, but Fuji without being ordered finds another purpose (becoming a nun) and Blackthorne protests the senseless killings of the villagers with his own death.

Hello Imon, it's me, the guy with the hands. I wonder if you have ever heard of the actor Toshiro Mifune, he played Yoshii Toranaga in the 1980s Shogun series.
He was a great actor, there's a great scene I love in Seven Samurai where he brings back the armor from Manzo's and he tells the other Samurai about the farmers, about their way of life.
I've been on a Akira Kurosawa journey for about a month now, I was watching Dreams (1990) a few nights ago, that film has so many beautiful scenes "Sunshine Through the Rain." "The Peach Orchard."
There's a scene that you would love called "Crows."
One of my favorites was "Village of the Watermills." Once you see it, you'll say that you want to live there, it's beautiful. I meets the Old Man at the village and he tells I,
"We try to live the way man used to. That's the natural way of life. People today have forgotten... they're really just a part of nature. Yet, they destroy the nature on which our lives depend. They always think they can make something better. Especially scientists. They may be smart but... most don't understand the heart of nature. They only invent things that in the end make people unhappy. Yet they're so proud of their inventions. What's worse, most people are, too. They view them as if they were miracles. They worship them. They don't know it, but they're losing nature. They don't see that they're going to perish. The most important things for human beings are clean air and clean water... and the trees and grass that produce them. Everything is being dirtied... polluted forever. Dirty air, dirty water... dirtying the hearts of men."
I know that you love Star Wars and I was watching a video where George Lucas said he was influenced by the movie "The Hidden Fortress (1958)" when he was writing the screenplay for Star Wars. In the interview he said he thinks someone asked Kurosawa once,
"What is in your movies? And what are they about? Why are you making them?"
And Kurosawa said that he's always trying to answer the question, "Why can't people be happier? And why can't they be happier together?"
There's a beautiful video that shows Kurosawa's work I think you would like on the channel "The Beauty Of"
It's called "The Beauty Of Akira Kurosawa"
Here is a list of the scenes as you see them.
    00:00 Ikiru (1952)
    00:17 Throne of Blood (1957)
    00:23 I Live In Fear (1955)

    02:57 Dodes'ka-Den (1970)
    02:58 Ran (1985)
    02:59 Dreams (1990)
“I suppose all of my films have a common theme. If I think about it, though, the only theme I can think of is really a question:
Why can’t people be happier together?”
    - Akira Kurosawa
As always Imon, it's been a pleasure.

Yabushige's fate is interesting. On the one hand it seems his shenanigans finally crossed a line when his betrayal led to Mariko's death. On the other hand we can see that Toranaga was always managing Yabushige's untrustworthiness, by playing him against his nephew for example. But only as long as he was potentially useful to him. After Crimson Sky, the battle was won, and there was no longer anything to gain from exposing himself to risks Yabushige brought. So, seppuku. Even though Mariko's death was always part of the plan - literally the Crimson Sky.

I distinctly remember my Japanese history teacher in college discussing the ironies of Japan during the Tokugawa Shogunate. She mentioned that by the end of the Tokugawa period the Samurai were now largely just bureaucrats-no longer warriors really. They might have called themselves Samurai and carried swords (largely for show by the 19th Century), but it wasn’t the same. The deaths we see here are, in a sense, the passing of a time and a tradition that is on the edge of its ending. What destroyed the samurai was Tokugawa’s success. If you’ve unified the nation what purpose does a hereditary warriors class even have anymore? Best to turn them into officials shuffling papers than keep around someone who might be a threat down the road.

Such a great series. I love how the women characters were portrayed as women of agency...Mariko Sama really was the main character in my humble opinion. And Yabushige, although winding up on the wrong side of history, was such a rock star character. Tadanobu Asano, the actor who portrayed Yabushige, is just so good. One of my favorite movies is Mongol...I think it's around 2007...and it stars Tadanobu Asano as Genghis Khan and he is just great in that movie as well. Thanks for another great series of reactions - I started watching/subscribed in the GOT days and I really enjoy your channel. :)

Buntaro had lost his father and his wife (who he loved at one time but who never loved him). He was likely feeling just as adrift as John was at the end.

It’s interesting to think how right Yabushige was: Torunaga’s goals weren’t really any different than Ishido’s, we just saw it more from his perspective. What warlord *wouldnt* want an end to war under their rule? That said, Torunaga was clearly more capable of pulling it off in an effective and lasting manner. In the real life version, Tokugawa eventually had the heir and his mother killed too

Glad to see that you enjoyed it Imom. I know many were expecting a huge CGI spectacle of a battle in the finale but despite this everyone seems to have really enjoyed the story telling & exposition of the finale & entire show. The finale was really emotional & poignant. It was a beautiful end they gave us with a bow on top.
Now obviously everything was superlative from the sets to the costumes to the cinematography but the actors really brought their A game which did the heavy lifting & brought it all together. Whether it was the major characters like Toranaga, Blackthorne or Mariko, the actors crushed it; however even the supporting actors did incredible work such as the actors for Father Alvito, Buntaro & charismatic betrayer Yabushige (his death poem was pure dark macabre comedy). The finale was so good. If the actors don’t get awards & recognition for their phenomenal work, it’ll be a travesty.

So this episodes was not only showing how far the characters have come, but a circling back on things that were said earlier. In the case of Fuji, what she said to Anjin was what Mariko had said to her when they came to execute her son and husband. Toranaga's line "why tell a dead man the future" was Toranaga letting Yabu know that he knew the entire time that he was the traitor and that Toranaga used that to his advantage. The spy was either Omi or that servant that was always following Yabu around. Plans, within plans, within plans. This played out very differently than the book, but still very satisfying.

I’ll be getting to Shogun in a few weeks time. Right now I’m binge rewatching Better Call Saul along with your reactions and having an awesome time. You and Abi were so damn funny and had some amazing chemistry, just felt like watching the show with the cool kids. Discovered you guys after my BB rewatch back in February and promptly binged your shows. So yeah I have a whole ton of Snow to catch up on 🙂. Quick question if I may - I was just kinda wondering if you and Abi had any plans for a future crossover. I haven’t got to either of your solo stuff yet, but am already missing you two together.

I hear that some people are disappointed with the final episode. Some even feel cheated for not getting a grand battle at the end. But that was the whole point, to avoid a costly battle, all the way up until Toranaga was sure to win it. Some movies and tv shows end with a short epilogue, tying all the knots. Here somewhat unusually the whole final episode was an epilogue. Such was the impact of Mariko's death: There was no way they could go for another narrative climax. All that was left was the epilogue. Besides, what's the point of showing a battle that was decided before it started? Where's the thrill in that?

The fact that many people really don't understand about shogun is that toranaga is actually a villain. Impressive and charismatic, but a villain nonetheless. When he says that he hates useless deaths it's not a statement meaning he appreciates the value of life. He just hates people dying without him gain anything of it. Whe ishido said "he has more sons" everyone thought it was an outrageous statement but we have seen toranaga say the same on the las episode. We thought that ochiba statement about toranaga being the mastermind of her father assassination was she blaming someone out of grief. But it's almost certain she was right. He's willing to sacrifice everyone and everything to reach power.
