- Somehow Jason Weigandt got invited to Rome, Italy to attend the retirement press conference for Tony Cairoli. The nine-time FIM World Motocross Champion (who could win title 10 this year) is calling it a career after the conclusion of this year’s MXGP season, but he says he’ll continue to race occasional races here and there, and that, yes, should include some stops at AMA Motocross Nationals next year!

So many years of racing and still so quick. Cairoli is amazing.
The tracks are easier, (faster, lots of ruts, but easier), especially the tracks the FIM makes us build in the USA. Now you might think a race is a race, and you do have a point. But what we see is 10 guys with just about the same lap times, and that means the tracks do not separate the talent, but squish it down from the top. It is actually a form of socialism/communism, where no man is suppose to do better than "their brothers".). It is tougher to do that for outdoor tracks, but in USA SX, the tracks could not be more redundant, and our best talent suffers from easy tracks, (for them). I have to say, in the 80's, Red Bud scared meto race on it as a hard clay track. Now that it is sand, and I am 57 years old, I would not jump all the jumps still, but other than that---it looks, (and they all do to me, maybe because I do like sand), like a fun Vet track to me.
I bet we can race these guys around my oval driveway while drinking beer racing XR75's,--and figure out how to keep up with them.
But that is not to say that if the tracks were more tricky, (and not just guts/speed), that Tony could not win. We would have to see if he really has the talent.
Doug in Michigan.
The man is absolutely legendary and humble. He has done so much for the sport as a role model and in the success of winning.
The sugar is put on top of the cereal, even if it is just saccharine.
Great career, but do you know why nobody will remember him in 20 years? He was told to be humble.
The world already forgot RC,---the goat. But we still remember Bob Hannah.
@@EarthSurferUSA I disagree, as a european way more people know who is RC, Bob Hannah, well lol not so much. It might be true in your country tho (which is kind of comical).
@@EarthSurferUSA McGrath was another racer who made a big name for himself, not only by winning a lot of races and championships, but because of his style, as well.
What this guy ^^^^^ said. 100%.
@@EarthSurferUSA Pretty sure most US MX fans will. And, the world didn't forget RC. Not by a long shot.
That would be epic to see him race a few nationals !
He would mop up for sure
Yes please!!!!
He is
Saw him race at Pala😁!!
Antonio Cairoli - true gentleman.
Thanks for going all the way to Rome to get this story, Weege!
Oh hell yeah!! Come race the nationals!!!! Old man show the young boys
Your a legend Tony! Please come race Unadilla. I would love to see you ride in person.
I will miss Tony.. 222. Looked forward to watching him race..
Thanks Tony for all the great rides..
One of the greatest to ever to twist the grip.
He was the first to POP Lacocco's leap at the MXON in 2018. It was muddy, and most guys were rolling and Cairoli just cranked it up and blasted over the triple. It was electric. Legend.
Gotta get Tony to race nationals next year. This dude is a legend. Imagine him, Tomac, Ferrandis and the boys ripping it up!
That would be epic.
He's retiring hence this press conference .he's not gonna race no more
@@Gpx111 he literally said in the video that he will now be free to race some nationals in the US lol
@@Gpx111 did you watch the video. He literally said he will race some of the nationals in the US
Sorry boys I didn't watch all of it . Be gd if he does the odd round . He would do well at southwick
Pure class and moto royalty
Cairoli is a machine! He's like the Terminator of MX. I would love to see him come over to the states and race.

Great interview Weege. So good to here KTM is keeping Antonio on. He is wealth of knowledge. Good on KTM for giving him a classy send off. He deserves it. 👍
A living legend.
And double plus bravo to you, Weege, for going over to attend and cover this.
Thankyou so much Weege, great interview as always, love your insights and what you present, well done mate.
Caroli is definitely one of the greatest! Thanks Weege for for this interview and site seeing of ITALY, it was a momentous event.
His humbleness is inspiring to young and old. It is awesome at his age he is still a force to be considered. I hope he can win 1 more.
I hate it when champions are humble. It discredits their achievements,---just to satisfy a bunch of losers.
from etown nj to rome ,nice gig weege , thats italian!
222 fan for sure. Thanks tony. Loved watching you race bro.
truly made a mark ! f'in hero to so many - what a guy
I already said it to Antonio on his post but I gotta say it again to this legend! I became a fan years ago when he was on a Yamaha and continued through! #BravoAntonio
What a legend. Educated and classy. Brings style to the sport on and off the bike.
I've heard it first from the Weege show & Jason Weigandt! We wish Caroli all the best. A true legend of the sport!
Probably the greatest of all time.
It would be awesome to see Tony racing the USA nationals! What a legend he is! 💪🏻
Dude next year is going to be so empty and strange without Tony. What a freaking legend, pleasure watching his amazing career.
Thank you Weege, great questions. Tony Cairoli.....what a legend! All time!
Sad to see you go my man. What an inspiration
THIS IS GUT WRENCHING. HE IS MY FAVORITE OUTDOORS RIDER PERIOD. IF HE DOES DO A OUTDOOR NATIONAL HERE IN US WHEREVER IT IS IM GOING I DEFINITELY WONT MISS THAT

Had the pleasure to meet Tony many times, always nice to the fans
AC222 racing some AMA Nationals in 22?! Oh Wow! Will love to see that.
Cant wait to see him line up in SX or MX eh! Maybe that is why Marv is only signed for SX, Cairoli is running RB-KTM outdoors with Webb and AP? Hmmm!
Great shpw as always Weege!
What a legend…AC 5 x champion on the 350 in the 450:class, no one has done that other than him. love to see him race some Nats in the US.. true champion 🤘

Remember *Mike Alessi* the *US HoleShot King* was on the *KTM 350* in *2010-2011*
Nice job weege. Sad to see Tony leaving but wow, what a fantastic career. Definitely be amazing if he came to the US to race some nationals.
18 years of racing motocross at the highest level. Hall of fame for sure.
Great job Weege, and you explained italia culture perfetto. 🇮🇹🙏🏼
Antonio! Antonio! Antonio! 🙌🏼
Good Luck to Tony #222 👏👏👏👏
True GOAT!!
I always love watching TC222 battling for the lead, amazing talent.
awwww shit! 2022 with Cairoli in the ama! That'd be rad to he him for a few races.
Great interview ,What a legend I am very excited about the prospect of Antonio cairoli racing a round or 2 in next year's AMA outdoors, nothing to prove just be mega for the fans and other riders
Bravo Tony🤘
An absolute legend. Years of awesome battles and still sticking it to them now!!!
Tough call to pull the pin when still at the top. But when you’re fit and healthy and accomplished more the most of the people that you line up against on the gate that’s got to feel good.
All the best 😎
Sad to see 222 not on the grid.Good luck, you will be missed
Much respect for Tony. One of my favorite riders of all times.
Cool stuff weege. Tony is a class act. All the best in the future.
awesome weege. what a freaking legend TC222 is.
i wish he would come to america next year.
Unbelievable he's still this successful and fast. True talent
Wait, didn't I just talk with you on Saturday in Sac at Hangtown? Whoa, the Weege is the Phantom of MX. Yes Rome is awesome and what a great inside scoop on the #222 legend. #stampit > the 60 Minutes of Moto-Journalism > Hand held and we love it. The big Question: did you ride a scooter there?
Nothing but respect.
Culture, culture. It opens people’s mind.
The real GOAT!!
Dream job! Thanks !
Cairoli is one the goats
Great vid, Tony a great champion, one of the all time greats in this awesome sport.
Tony, come race the nationals!
World class all the way
would so love to see you race the USA !!
its so true when he talks about bikes being easier to ride now, some of the early 450s around say 2002-2010 compared to now is pretty crazy, the old bikes always had power but struggled so hard in turns, clutching, of course the carb was terrible.
The power is so much more controllable now, they really have the EFI sorted. You can make them whatever you want.
And for another 15 grand per bike, we can make a coffee table ride well if forced by the EPA. The bikes and tracks got too fast because of 4-stroke forced regulation---and Scott Sheak just died from a crash. RIP
Still a 450 is a killing machine if you don’t know it! 250 are more than enough
@weege - wow, great journalism. Was it just coincidence you were there? TC at a national would be AWESOME.
The ORIGINAL AC! Sad to see him hangup the boots. Edit: glad to hear he might do some nationals over here
So funny to see Weege in Rome, a long way from Charlotte.
Great coverage. I felt the same way about Rome on my first visit.
2x Italian motorcycle racing legends retire so close from each other .. Stella careers and shows even now he can still run with the youngsters
The GOAT of mxgp.. LEGEND !!!
Please come race some US motocross!
An absolute GOD on the bike, an absolute GENTLEMAN off the bike!!!
Such a legend. Best of luck Toni
Ah the Hotel de la Ville, one of my favorite places to stay when I go to Rome
This was Awesome 🤙 great interview Weege
In the presence of a legend who has shaped the sport and even a manufacturer in ways he has and is offering an interview, maybe you could not interrupt him with "yeah, yes, uh huh, ok". Otherwise, great content from one of the best to ever do it!
I would love to see him come to the US and race outdoors, that would be great!
Great champ. I'm really bummed they won't combine the US and MXGP series for a few races. Yeah, I know the guys here in the US are at a bit of a disadvantage since they ride SX half of the year. But, I don't believe it'd be a complete runaway by the MXGP guys. Maybe 4 races, 2 in the US, 2 in Europe. It'd be nice to bring the best from the MXGP here to the US. Would be awesome to see guys like Cairoli, Herlings, Tonas, and the rest.
Props to Cairoli. Amazing career he's had. I really hope he comes here to ride a few races, ESPECIALLY Thunder Valley!!! You reading this, Tony? :-) A vast majority of US fans would welcome him here. I'm most certainly one of them.
I would fly to the US to watch him take on the Americans for sure . Tony is an awesome guy, I remember speaking to him in 2005 at Desertmartin in Ireland at a world championship round at the start of his career he was very approachable as was Stefan Everts I still have the signed posters from them both ...
Really wish the US series and MXGP series would intertwine a bit more throughout the summer to bring in the talent overseas (and vice versa) to compete more than just once. I get teams don't want to risk rider health to do it but our sport is not doing well and there needs to be a sacrifice somewhere to get it back to the glory days of the late 90's and early 2000's.
Edit: I guess the point of me saying this is Tony is a legend and there's so many legends overseas that us American's don't really get to see race and see how fast they are compared to our riders. Our sport needs both series' to compete more often.
Sport has it Glory right now! Both mxgp and AMA are super stacked Fields! 10-15 guys that can win motos in both series! It’s been a long time since it was This competitive
LEGEND.
Legend.
What a legend 👍
To bad there is not a 4 race series where the US national riders and MXGP riders face off. Red Bull and Monster have the deep pockets, lets go.
In the early Seventies when I first started following motocross there were two series which involved European riders and American riders: The Inter-Am (250cc) which ran in the summer and the Trans-Am (Open class 360-500cc) which ran in the fall.
@@milesdufourny4813 That's right. I went to the Trans am races at Saddleback Park in the OC. Decoster, Gerrit Wolsink, Adolf Weiled, Bent Alberg, Karsmaker, Mikola, etc.. As a teenager racing there at the time and marveling at the speed of the local pros and them watching the Europeans and thinking they are gods. It was an eye opener for me on how fast a human could go on a dirt bike.
Until the last few years they used to get several top US riders racing in the US MXGP stop. Eli had won 3 events in MXGP with 1-1 Moto scores. I’m guessing the competition would be tougher now.
This is sick! Go Weege ya bloody legend 😋👍
Rome is beautiful... I loved it. You should visit the Vatican, Colosseum, etc. to see the architecture and art. Of course the food is wonderful, as are the people. 👍
One question I would have like you to ask is : what do you learn and how do you change in the course of 9 world champion tiltles ?
As we just witnessed wednesday in Turky, there must be something special to be able to catch a group like Herlings-Gaiser-Febvre and stick it to the reigning world champ, at the top of his game, on the last lap
How many MX bikes do the citizens of Turkey buy a year? Next to none? Then why does the FIM waste the industries money racing there, and other primitive nations with no fans who can afford a bike?
@@EarthSurferUSA
Tell me if I'm wrong but that sounds very American as a point of view..
You might be interested to know that, in other cultures, it might happen that money doesn't come first for every decisions.
Though you might argue that the "results" of such a philosophy is terribly "inefficient", values like sportsmanship and universality do bring a lot to the life of many. The FIM and many international sports federations take a lot from the "Olympic" values and , behind the physical performances and personal achievements, there is a truly wonderful effort to bring the people together, beyond politics, religion, race and social inequalities.
@@EarthSurferUSA do you even know where most MX bikes in the world are sold? Tell me what country you think and let’s see how much you know….
@@Thjonsson1 Tell us. I don’t know.
Would be nice to see Tony come over for some riding. Solid vid.
Will be sick to see him mix it up wit the US boys
Grande Tony! #222. Would be nice to see racing in USA for sure.
I JUST JUMPED UP, come on over Tony!!!
Hearing him say ..WI WI and not meaning to had me...LOL
I like his moustache!
