Do you just pour everything out of the pot when you repot? Then add it back into another pot with additional pumice? I wish there was a video with planting, fertilizing and repotting a plant….actual demonstration.

The clay used in catlitter is called bentonite. Check for that. That clay is also ued for makeup and other beautyproducts. Even in soap.
I buy my pomice as a saltfree spred for icy areas. I have found one that is pure pomice. (I live in Norway).
Slowreleasing nutrience you should find in any normal plantshop. As pellets.
Love your videos. Secially your skånedialekt. Im a skåning living in Norway.

.... what everyone else said, AND! I LOVE your intro!! It's compact and not overused, it's "swingy", it's recognisable and sounds happy, and also - which many RUclipsrs haven't figured out yet - it has the same volume like the actual video! :D The classic design is neat too! Just wanted to mention this as well , although it's rather trivial. But I thought you'd like some feedback on that too. Greeting from Germany

It was really helpful and inspiring! There's a ton of misleading information about all the soil must being removed prior to planting in pumice/clay/lava/mix of those. And people really spend hours removing the soil and reaping the roots of. I do my best but not abuses after your videos. I successfully planted two plants with peat moss, which is impossible to remove from roots completely in pumice with akadama for better cec, and they're perfectly fine! They're both aren't cheap (White Princes Philodendron in 6-inch pot and Monstera Aurea in 3 gallon pot), so I really trusted you guys and didn't regret it! Thank you so much 💚

Thank you, always great information. When using pumice how do you know how often to water? I'm trying to change to pumice from soil, it seems it would be difficult to judge the water needs. With normal soil I can tell by the weight of the pot if it's dry or I can use a moisture meter, but with pumice neither of these two methods would work.

This is excellent and much appreciated. In the last six months or so I’ve been converting my plants over to either pon (moisture loving), a mix of half and half pon and pumic (medium plants), or all pumice and akadama/monto clay (plants which like a dry phase). All but one aglaonema (which was in all pon) has thrived. It’s been fun experimenting with substrate combinations and pot types (completely enclosed, self watering, or a direct substitute for soil). Next I’m going to try and convert a living wall to a complete pumice mix. Don’t understand why no one other than Swedish Plant Guys has been talking about this. All the best from Newfoundland.

.. I make my own potting mix with coconut coir as a base and add either perlite or vermiculite depending of what plant it is, and they are happily growing a lot better, thanks to you.. Pumice in Denmark is not available I guess, since I can't find it anywhere, but when perlite and vermiculite works perfectly I'm happy.. And of course I use fertilizer and worm casting too.. I don't think my plants have ever been so healthy as they are now 🤗🌞

For Akadama, what is the ratio between Pumice and Akadama? I tried looking at bonsai videos but that community seems to base their substrate with 1/3 Akadama, 1/3 Pumice, and 1/3 “lava rock.” I would like to know what works best for you in you’re practice. I am planning on using semi hydro for my Philodendron Gloriosum. Thank you so much in advance!

Any chance you can talk about Lachuza Pon? I believe it's a mixture of Pumice, Lava Rock and Zeolite (and some slow releasing fertilizer). According to your video, we can simply use 90% Pumice and 10% Zeolite, so I'm really curious what is the purpose of Lava Rock in Pon (maybe other than esthetics). And if we were to recreate Pon, what kind of slow releasing fertilizer should we use.
Also, if Pumice and Zeolite is used as per your 9:1 ratio, would the roots be closer to soil roots or water roots?

I would like to grow basil year round (live in Canada). I am at present growing basil, with some success in good potting soil with lots of pumice in the mix (30%) using a self watering pot. I have found I can sustain basil from the supermarket by using an open container and just sticking the stems in room temperature water and leaving it out on the bench but this is an expensive way to keep basil for cooking. Can I grow basil in just pumice using self watering and feeding periodically throughout the winter months?

I liked your videos very much.
I'a "very new" gardener, I met and liked pumice very much.
And to see that someone recommends pumice made me happy. I wonder something.
You use white pumice, or "gray".
Why not red or brown pumice?
Is there a reason for it? I live in Turkey, and I've learned that gray pumice is better for buildings, and red pumice is better for plants. Do you have a special reason to use gray pumice?

Do you use a moisture meter to monitor the moisture levels so you know when to water your plants again? I would be worried about not knowing when to water since this is so different than regular soil. I'm also wondering, I see that this pot had drainage holes at the bottom. Does it work as well to have drainage at the bottom? Since the vase in the in depth video didn't have drainage, I was wondering if it dries out much faster when there are drainage holes?

I use 80/20 pomice/coco choir which was recommended by RUclipsr Eric Shrader. The idea of using akadama is an excellent one. One thing about pomice is that the dust is very bad to inhale and behaves a bit like asbestos or silica. Always use proper masks when mixing pomice. The idea of cation exchange comes up in the bonsai community on a regular basis and is one argument to the use of akadama. It’s good to know there are other additives that can achieve this. I would love to see some academic work on the exact time factor or percentage difference of using cation exchange materials vs without. Conceptually if dilute fertilizer is added to all watering then these would not be needed. So if we skip cation exchange material how much more offer should one fertilize? There are many many opinions on the topic and I’m sure there are academics who have studied this as well. I suppose there are also even more types or roots. Most growers over water and don’t allow roots the oxygen they need. Still I have many trees I grow standing in water like willow, bald cypress and wisteria. These water living plants don’t seem to have the same need for oxygen around the roots or are at least protected from root rot. Thank you again for an excellent video.
    Mats

When he recommended adding cat litter as a source of clay, he forgot to mention that it has to be non-clumping natural clay cat litter. Check the package to see that it contains only 100% clay - do not use it if it has any added chemical ingredients like artificial scents, colors or other chemicals that are potentially toxic to your plants or could interfere with your soil's healthy chemistry. Also, avoid clumping cat litter. These add sodium bentonite, another type of natural clay that swells when it contacts moisture, is added to the mix and forms clumps. This keeps the clay from being loose and airy.

If you’re aren’t able to tell when to water by just looking at the plant it’s ok. Pumice holds air/oxygen. Water away. This is, of course, if you’re using pumice alone.
If you use it mixed in with soil, just use a moisture meter or your finger.

I bought it 4 months ago and the baby leaves won't open ever since. I suspect the tap water is not very good for my plants because I get brown tips on my dracaena as well. Could that be the main issue? Or could it be low humidity?

    • @radhikam3348
      @radhikam3348 3 года назад +3

Conversion is supereasy if you can do a Google search. Open google.com, type in the searchbar... for eg "8 inches to cm" and you will get the answer in your preferred unit. Or type in "inches to mm" or really any other unit that you need conversion for and the converter opens up. Length, volume, weights...you can convert anything. Different countries in the world use different measuring units, and I find it easier to look up the conversions myself rather than depending on content creators to list out every unit. Plus I think it would be toooooo many numbers for my math-challenged brain. 🤣🤣🤣

01 When you develop a cutting in Pumice only:
Does it send down soil roots or water roots?
02 When you put water roots in soil:
Do they adapt or do they rot while new soil roots develop?

Hi, i've been using pomice for a few weeks now and I really like how it looks. However I have some difficulties with determening whether or not my soil is dry/almost dry, thus I have some difficulties knowing if I'm over or underwatering my plants. Hope you guys can help me with this!

Like in normal soil you can stick your finger in it and determmine if you need to water your plants

You can use a chop stick or something similar. If your roots are close to the top of the pot you will need to keep the top few inches moist until they start growing. When pumice or other inorganic materials dry out the pot is really light. After a couple months of watering your substrate it will hold on to water longer. Foliage pro is an excellent fertilizer for these types of substrate. And flush once every 4-6 weeks.

Lava rocks vs pumice is there any difference? Are they interchangeable?

So would a mix of 45-50 percent pumice, 25-30 percent vermiculite, 15 percent zeolite, and 5 percent of charcoal be a good growing medium? Or replace pumice with coarse sand?

    • @dixiechick6652

I would keep the pumice. I haven’t used zeolite but it seems like a good product. Just try to get a pumice a similar size to the zeolite and a bigger grain vermiculite not fine grain. I don’t know what your growing but I use similar inorganic substrates for basic house plants and you will be happy with the results. Foliage pro is a great all in one fertilizer.

@@dixiechick6652 I grow everything right now in about 1:1:1 ratio of sand, course vermiculite, and pumice. Obviously no nutrition in it, so I usually pile on a few inches of compost, mulch, and/or whatever will decompose naturally. If I prune my tomato, I cut them into smaller pieces and throw em in. Tomato is green as anything and growing well. Our heat wave killed a lot of the flowers tho. Hopefully fast recovery. Roots supposed to be really fine and white and plentiful. I will know soon enough lol

@@dixiechick6652 don't try straight pumice outside tho. It may work with mulch, but try some vermiculite like 7:3. Sand is heavy so maybe you don't want it. Enjoy :)

I wouldn’t. They clump and almost bind together that it’s hard to separate them unless dry.

Short answer: Buy cat litter made out of zeolite, not the clumping sodium bentonite. At my local supermarket (Woolworths, Australia) they sell zeolite cat litter called 'Clay cat litter' under their Essentials brand. It's in an orange packet.
Long answer: I think it depends on the kind of kitty litter you use. Often, the ingredient in kitty litter designed to clump is a natural clay called sodium bentonite. Kitty litter can also be made out of a different kind of clay called zeolite (as mentioned in the video). Zeolite has a higher CEC (ability to absorb nutrients) than bentonite, so go with a kitty litter made of zeolite. The ingredients of any cat litter should be listed on the back of the pack.
