    I'm devoted to the Kala silver-plated round wounds, and up until this demo I didn't much like poly/rubber strings. But these sound good! If I ever get another u-bass, I might try these browns. Thanks for the demo! (p.s. I liked the way you sequenced the comparison with the old strings. Very nicely done!)

      Thanks Jules, I would really like to have put these on Pinky but the colour thing was putting me off. They are lush to play though so who knows, one day............... Appreciate the editing comment too, did my head in when it came to putting it together! LOL

    Must admit, on sound alone, I thought the white strings sounded better? What do you mean when you said "textured" Rachel, I'd have thought that would have given the same sound effect as a wound string, I could hear a slight noise when you slid up the fret board. Prefer the smoother whites for sound clarity, but I'm not a bass player, yet!!

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  2 года назад +1

      I'll do another vid soon with some close ups. It's different type of texture, not continuous like roundwounds, more natural if that make sense, it's difficult to explain in words. I'm definitely not a fan of roundwounds on a fretless and I didn't get that feeling at all with these. Shall do a more indepth review soon, they've settled really well too.

  • @tobiasware

    Interesting comparison, Rachel. The Thunderbrowns sounded almost the same as the old strings when both were on the bass, but there was a definite difference in the higher register when the complete new set was on. I like the idea of a texture to the strings, too; the thundeerguts just roll too much and are slightly off-putting. How much do these go for? Oh, and I'd love to see a video on how to change the strings.

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, agree it's very interesting. The more I play them definitely the more I am loving the feel and texture of them. Currently they are on the Aquilar site for aroung the 30 euros mark but I think they are being sent out to distributors worldwide at the moment so should hopefully appear with you soon. I know the shipping and taxes to UK at the moment are awful!! I will do a string change video one day promise.

    • @jelousjoint8344
      @jelousjoint8344 2 года назад +1

      I'm going to mount them now in my ubass; I've buy them exactly to see if, as they promise, they didn't roll as the old thunder guts.. Also they should have more volume and the diameter should be similar to normal bass strings, making the intonation easier! I'm very excited.
      The 30€ price it's just a discount on the actual price that would be around 50€

    I was tempted by the positive posts on the new browns, but I couldn't find them on sale in the UK so I bought the reds. I think the feel, compared with pahoehoe is much more significant than the sound.

    Helpful video as ever. There are so many different types/makes of strings that comparisons are very useful. When you do the Bass Uke string change video will you cover those without the back opening as not all bass ukes have them?

    • @UkuleleWales

      Thanks Malcolm. I will certainly mention basses without back openings when I do a string change video and I'll also need to mention solid body basses as I noticed a few things when I strung the bass with the new thunderblacks.

    So we got a demonstration of the old strings that you describe as unknown, then you put the new string on and said you were going to compare the old and the new. But all we got at the end of the video was playing the new ones. A comparison of the old followed by the new playing the same riff would have shown a comparison.

    • @701malibu

    • @UkuleleWales

      Hi Ray, I did play the same riff all the way through and I was trying to keeping it nice and short and in time order hence why I didn't re-add the prior demos, I thought it would be easy enough to go back in the video as it's all marked in the chapters. Appreciate your feedback though.

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  2 года назад

      To my playing, yes I'd say slightly more tension on the blacks to browns but I would be happy putting blacks on this, even without the trussrod. I wouldn't put round wounds on though.

  • @romantea3506
    @romantea3506 Год назад

    Does the E string have a little more tension with the thunderbrowns than with the white ones? I have white aquila on mine and the low E is so slack it's not even really sounding much.

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  Год назад

      Great question. I would say they have a very similar tension, if anything the white Aquila strings have slightly more tension than the Thunderbrowns.
      What bass uke do you have? I have white strings on a few of my basses and they sound fine. Could it possibly be the pickup sounding quieter on the E string? Try firmly pressing the saddle down over the E string, it may help.

      Great question Malcolm but a difficult one to answer. I love the Kala roundwound strings on my California Ubass but they are VERY different from the rubber strings so unfair to compare those. Out of the rubber strings I've always liked the cream Thundergut but having played these Thunderbrowns now I REALLY like the way they feel but it is a little to early to give a final answer. I'll try and do a more indeoth video very soon.

    • @UkuleleWales

      If it's the Kala Journeyman I *think* it often comes with Kala Wound strings which are metal wound round a nylon core but you can also use the polyurethane (rubber) strings. I wouldn't recommend normal bass guitar metal strings though.

    • @UkuleleWales
      @UkuleleWales  2 года назад

      Great question Christopher. The body size are pretty mch the same but it would take a lot of alterations to the baritone uke - tuners, nut, bridge, pick-up if there is one installed, without would mean very very quiet. I think it is"doable" but not something I would recommend or think about doing myself. Hope that answers you.

      Hi David, there are metal strings (generally would around a nylon core) for the electro acoustic bass ukes but I wouldn’t recommend them on this particular bass ukulele as it doesn’t have a truss rod so would be concerned about the tension on the neck.

I guess you loose some you win some... 😀 May I ask you, which Thunderbrowns you strapped onto the Uke? the "short" or the "long" ones? They come in two length at thomann and I am worried if the short ones might be just a tiny bit too short. But I'd save 5€ if they do fit. ;-)
