  • We’ve spent a fair bit of time since arriving in Ireland redecorating my mother in law’s apartment, ready for her return from a care home.
Her homecoming was never imagined and her recovery has been miraculous, we would never have believed the last 10 months of her journey if we hadn’t been intrinsic to it.
An unbelievably fantastic outcome, she’s now know as ‘ miracle mum!’
We can now start to explore this beautiful county as we help her transition back to full independence.
The Causeway Coastal Route had to be on our agenda.
We’ll explore Belfast separately, so started our Road Trip with our first stop in Carrickfergus.
County Antrim’s oldest town, in fact one of the oldest in Ireland, complete with its Norman castle dating back to 1177. Strolling the towns streets and enjoying morning coffee got us off to a good start.
We drove through Whitehead and decided to take a detour onto Browns Bay Scenic Route, a circular tour of Islandmagee, gorgeous scenery and a picturesque bay for our lunchtime picnic, we were entertained by Gannets diving for their lunch too, really pleased we opted for the detour.
After Larne we headed further north, the drive along the coast with the Glens of Antrim on our left is a stunning drive, one of our all time favourites, we’ve done it in better weather and blue skies really do make a difference but it was gorgeous all the same.
Through Cushendall and Cushenden passing Torr, stopping at Ballycastle for afternoon tea.
We didn’t walk the Carrik-a-Rede rope bridge this time, we couldn’t believe how much the entrance fee is nowadays, it was a tenner to just park the car 🤦🏼‍♀️.
The weather was quite grim by the time we reached the Giants Causeway, so we planned to return the following day, hoping it will be dry.
Onwards to Bushmills distillery for a wee dram for me and a takeaway for the driver 👍🥃
We ended the day at Portrush enjoying dinner at the Quays a lovely gastropub where we devoured delicious food👍
Looking forward to tomorrow’s discoveries 👍
