    Youve given me some great tips on how to improve my J Harping. I have the same one that you travel with, as well as the glazyrin model. Very different sounds. I like the travel model better, as it grants more tone along with the reed vibrations. Would love to see some more videos like this one, maybe some different styles.

    The sound of THAT jaw harp definitely is one of the very best i have heard so far!! i would like to get one eventually.... Back to beginning when i first subscribed to your channel and started seeing for the first time your lessons, i said i have my jaw harp wedged between my teeth, not against them, you asked me which harp it was- it is Maultrommel harp, which i still use, because it is the only one i have so far....Anyway, thank you for your videos and the way you explain things it makes it fun to watch. Jaw harps and their almost " mystical" powers are certainly fascinating! It is just that a person progresses very slow trying to get somewhere....

    Hi thanks for your channel
    I want two harps as I have two kids. I want them to play duo and duels. You have any thoughts on a choice of beginners harps that would sound well together. Different keys I want to buy: "Lighthouse" Vargan (some say it is F# /1?) you did recommend already and "Standard" Kubyz Tatar (G#/2) . I wonder if it will play well F# with G#. Is there any rule for playing two harps?

    How do you tune a jaw harp? Could you make a video about that?

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331
      @bebbcorpharpery7331  7 лет назад +6

      Sure can. The jaw harp isn't an instrument that needs to be regularly tuned, like a guitar for instance, that has strings constantly stretching and going out of tune. Harps are tuned by the maker when they are made and this is a big subject with lots of factors that will affect the tuning and sound of a harp. Some of the factors would be the profile and how the reed is ground. The angles of the embouchure and as well as the gaps between the embouchure and reed. The next would be the length of the reed relative to the stiffness and width of the reed. A longer reed has further travel when it vibrates and so as the reed is shortened it vibrates faster. The stiffness and width of the reed also comes into play. The narrower the reed is made the lower the tone will be. if the reed is wider it is a thicker spring and exerts more force causing the reed to vibrate quicker and at a higher. Also the the harder the reed the faster it vibrates bringing the tone up. Also how the trigger is bent affects the tuning. The further angle the trigger is moved out, the lower the tone. This is because it has more leverage and slows down the reed and lowers the tone. The more the trigger angle is bent in the higher the tone will become as leverage against the reed decreases and the reed vibrates faster and the tone comes up. Some makers tune with reed length and how the trigger is done. Others may put small bits of solder on their triggers to lower the tone and file off solder to raise it to hit the sound they want. Others file small amounts off the reed to tune it. Some may wrap wire around the trigger or add magnets to weight the trigger down and drop the tone. The removable magnet method creates a harp with two sounds. One lower while the harp is played with the magnet on, and a higher tone once the magnet is removed. Hopefully this helps and if vibeforge sees this comment he probably will comment and has more accurate information as well.

    My stepdad told me that a jaw harp can loosen your teeth if you play them too much. Isn't there some way to prevent it? That's what he told me when i told him i wanted to learn how to play the jaw harp.

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331
      @bebbcorpharpery7331  7 лет назад +3

      I haven't heard any evidence of harps loosening teeth or damaging healthy teeth and I have spoken with people that have played them their whole lives and are now old. If a harp is damaging or loosening teeth it is a big indicator of an underlying case of a serious oral problem, i.e. periodontis, gum and tooth disease, and other forms of oral dysfunction. If a person has any of these, many everyday foods pose the same threats as a harp. Tough foods, jerky, corn, gum, candy. If you have healthy teeth and gums then the harp will pose no greater risk than these foods. Correct playing of the harp will not include hard biting, chewing, or putting a lot of strain or pressure against the teeth. You might also ask some questions to your dentist, but unless you have oral disease or weakened teeth and gums due to drug use or old age, you shouldn't have any issues. Also be sure to mind your parents judgment, they always have your best interest at heart.

    • @ashley2680
      @ashley2680 7 лет назад +1

      I don't know why he told me that. Apparently his music teacher told him that they could loosen teeth. I don't really have an oral problem though.

      @bebbcorpharpery7331  Год назад +1

      Any extra soft material might end up dampening the vibration and quieting the harp. A good jaw harp should never rattle on teeth or be uncomfortable. Only toy harps should do that.

    My boyfriend & i just got our jaw harps today cause they came in the mail. We got them off of www.danmoi.com. I still want to learn how to play, despite my parents' judgements. I'm sure if you took a break from playing once in a while you wouldn't have the problem of loosening teeth.

      Are you trying to play a snoopy harp, first note jaw harp, or hillbilly harp? If so they are defective 100% of the time and will make little to no sound. Check out theharpery.com

    You don’t actually know how to play this instrument. You just make noises with it. If you focus the shape of your mouth you can actually pick out melodies from the overtones.

      Actually melodic play involves more than mouth shape. It will also involve opening and closing of the glottis. This is a beginner video and I am not involving these techniques for those new to the instrument. These techniques can be found in many different countries and cultures like in Norway, Estonia, Rajasthan, and a few other places.
