Battle of Vittorio Veneto (Italy vs Austro-Hungary World War I)

- The Battle of Vittorio Veneto was fought mainly between Kingdom of Italy against Austro-Hungarian Empire from 24 October to 3 November 1918 near Vittorio Veneto on the Italian Front during World War I. On 24 October, 1 year anniversary of Italian defeat at Battle of Caporetto (Isonzo), in the early hours Comando Supremo launched the splintering attack on the Monte Grappa designed to draw in the Austro-Hungarian reserves. The Italian infantry began to struggle up the steep slopes and secondary peaks which the Austrians had held for so long. At dawn on the 31st October 1918, the Italian Fourth Army resumed the offensive on the Monte Grappa and this time was able to roll over the old Austrian positions and advance on Feltre. In the mountains and on the plain the Allied armies pushed on until an armistice was arranged. The result was that Austria-Hungary lost about 30,000 killed and wounded and 300,000 prisoners. The battle marked the end of the First World War on the Italian front and secured the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire. During the battle, Czechoslovakia, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs and even Hungary declared Independence and detached themselves from Austro-Hungarian Empire. Left the Austro-Hungarian army plagued by mutiny and unable to resist Italian offensive.

More Italians died in the alps against Austria-hungary than in all of WW2. Very difficult fighting in the mountains
My grand daddy served there for 4 years /A.-H. soldier/ and he always said that the worst killer was the cold - Not the opposing soldiers.
In WW2 we lost quite early in 1943 for our luck. We get rid of that filthy fascist government and exiled the king's family. Then was partisan activity, our heroes. Some of them fought also in WW1

My grand grand father served in the isonzo, he survived 2 years in the trenches. He died age of 41 because of Septicimia the war didn't kill him but a doctor did.
In the First World War more Austro-Hungarians died than Italians, that's what counts.
Especially considering that Italy was alone against a much larger and more populated empire than Italy which had annexed Serbia in a short time and other territories.
The only time the Austro-Hungarian Empire was able to push the Italians back was when the Germans sent troops to help the Austro-Hungarian Empire

The Italians clearly had the worst army in ww1 with no proper Training, Equipment and artillery pieces.
Italy was a poor and weak country that was even poor of grain supplies and Italy was dependent on British grain supplies.
Yes, the british even sent troops to Italy to support the war. The italian army was a weak unit with poor Training and didn't even have enough artillery pieces.
While the Austro Hungarian troops were fighting on the eastern front, and in the south in Greece (by 1918). The Austrians only had some weak militia troops in the first year, the so called "Kaiserjäger" which consisted of citizens with no proper military Training. And Italy hasn't even made it to defeat them. So in a war where ONLY the Austrians fought Against the Italians you wouldn't have had a chance.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the Italians or the Italian army, I'm 50% Italian by myself but I don't like it when people are talking shit about the first ww and say that Italy had such a strong and powerful Army when this clearly wasn't the case, my friend. :)

Some day someone should made a movie about this Battle. All go for French side and forgot the Italian Glory.
Just a few facts about how the Germanics lied about their "heroism" and denied Italy their just due in both WW's:
Rommel was a “genius” thanks only to the Italians:
“At that point, of course, the situation changed considerably and Rommel has gone down in history as one of the greatest military leaders of all time for his stunning victories over the British in north Africa.. What many fail to realize though is that the forces effectively under his command, which he used to win these masterful successes, were 2/3 Italian and the large majority of his armored forces were Italian tanks.”
“The German soldier has impressed the world, however the Italian Bersagliere soldier has impressed the German soldier.”
_Rommel
And Italian intelligence and bravery:
NOTE: This video has since been removed due to copyright infringement. It showed how Italian Intelligence Services penetrated British Intelligence and relayed British fighting positions to Rommel, hence why he seemed to know their every move.
"Not only should Tunisia have exploded the myth of Hitler's military acumen, it should have discredited the idea that Germans fought better than the Italians, since Messe's 1st Italian Army held out longer than Arnim's 5th German Army and the DAK, even both groups had about six divisions and faced roughly equal Anglo-American forces. Indeed, Hermann Goring division was the first to be scattered on 7 May, DAK the next to break and surrender on 9 May, with the Italian Spezia division closing the gap created by the German collapse and watching still combat-efficient German units march off into captivity on 11 May. Whether it is significant that the German 90th Light division was the first to collapse in Messe's 'Italian' Army, there is no doubt that the Italians fought well and held out longest in Tunisia." (The Second World War: The German War 1939-1942, Jeremy Black, Page 265, Ashgate, 2007)”
strange to know Italy and Japan were actually allies during WW1 fighting alongside the Western powers
Also Italy's cousin, Romania. But I do not see what is strange here - they simply joined the bad guys twice, only the result was different. :)
@@FranzKrommer there's no bad guy i ww1
@nemico yes there were bad guys in WW1. Germany and Austtia were anti-democratic and authocratic governments, ruling over peoples who wanted independence. Look it up.

There were kingdoms in the entente it wasn’t even a war about democracy it wasn’t bad guys vs good guys I’m Italian but I don’t think the Germans were monsters and I know about the rape of Belgium but the entente committed crimes too they didn’t even give freedom to the Arabs that fought alongside them so saying “there were countries that wanted independence “ then why did France took all the colonies from Africa and Japan stole islands to the Germans and didn’t give them independence
The only thing the war was about is to take lands from the newly formed countries
that got fueled by nationalism and liberalism
@@InfoRomeMaybe you learn history again too. Especially how you describe Russia Empire was democratic when the Tsar was autocratic.
“Let’s attack the same mountain fort for the 12th time with the same strategy, what could go wrong?”
That was literally every front in the war. Also this is Italy's triumph.
Nah it changed a lot in the last year. We had our assault corps, the "arditi". Granades (6 each), flamethrower, knives, and the first machine gun in the world "Villar Perosa". We tried them a lot in 1918 in the months before the victory, using them for little offensive. More than 4000 austo-ungarian were captured and even more killed, also enemy material was captured and once they clear out the enemy trench sector, they return back to friendly trenches. Quite scary for the enemy. For approaching the enemy trenches we massively used artillery and air support (especially in the final battle Vittorio Veneto).
Let's involve ourselves in every skirmish with farmers, goat herders and recently a poor country with corrupt government so we can claim an easy victory...OOPS!
Have the famous Bosniaks fought on the Austrian side here? They were the most feared Austrian soldiers amongst Italians 🇦🇹🇧🇦

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg fielen die Deutschen Italien in den Hintern, brachen jeden Pakt mit Freund und Feind.
My great-granddad from mother's side from Slovak part of Austria-Hungary fought in this battle as an artillery man of A-H Army (they had to join the army or get hanged). During the battle, an Italian sniper shot him in the leg (he had the bullet in the leg for the rest of his life, surviving the wound) and they had to hastily retreat, leaving the heavy(er) artillery pieces behind and at one point even eating part of their artillery towing horses on their way back to Slovak part of Hungary, as they had no food rations left, which crumbled within less a month and became Slovak part of 1. Czechoslovak republic (the fighting continued in Slovakia, since it was 1) still partially occupied by some Hungarian-loyal forces which tried to prevent former Slovak part of Hungary (Austria Hungary) becoming part of Czechoslovakia, 2) fighting with local and Hungarian bolshevik Russia-inspired bolsheviks who tried to install bolshevik governments all around post WW1 Europe, but were in the Slovak case defeated by Czechoslovak Legion (part of it from Italy and France with Italian and French volunteers, part of it returning from Bolshevik Russia where they fought the bolshevik Red Army with the help of Russian White Army and its W allies) and Army and in E Slovakia with the help of Romanian Army. By the end of 1919, all the Slovak territory promised to Czechoslovakia by western allies and international treaties + Treaty of Trianon was in Czechoslovak hands, Hungarian troops having to retreat/move to Hungary, CS and Hungarian bolsheviks dead, escaping to bolshevik Russia or getting underground and later forming pre-WW2 communist parties in their respective countries. The breakup of Kingdom of Hungary into self-governing nation states (part of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Yugoslavia, part of Ukraine and others) created a revisionist sentiment in Hungary which lasts to this day, mostly right of the center/Hungarian alt right and current Orban government wanting the return of pre-1918 territories to Hungary, despite the wishes of populations of those countries and their populations.

People said the soldiers of the Dual Monarchy would not fight, but they did to the very end until it was realized the Empire was over and see what could be picked out of the ashes. In 1933 Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia should have allied. And in Yugoslavia the Slovens and Croats realized they had made a big mistake to be under the boots of the Serbs.

may I know what is this movie title called for the first part of your video
Uomini contro by Francesco Rosi and is well before 1917 and Caporetto, during one of the 11 battles of Isonzo

It says November 24th 1918. If I’m not mistaken the war ended on November 11th 1918...
October 24th
Where do you find this clip?
The name of the film in the first part of the video?
The Silent Mountain
Because of the French and the British, Italy is a prisoner. But this story will end. Germany is outclassing France again and China is outclassing the British Empire.
What movie
My Grandfather was there Piedmontese Brigade 4 th regiment.
Then Italy grabbed regions with 250 German speakers, 300k Croats, 250 Slovenes, so much for self-determination, and the Sudeten Germans were not a allowed to join Germany, and the Germans on the south side of Bohemia and Moravia were not allowed to join Austrian. Now you can drive from Boulogne to Tallinn or to Athens without having to show your passport, but guess what wouldn't you know it the Hungarians or part of them are acting up as are some Slovenes. 75 million dead from 191445 and they still haven't learned.
Because those regions had a majority of Italians. Germany tried to do the same in territories with German minorities and France DID the same in two territories with hundred of Germans

Uomini contro
My Austro-German great grandfather fought at Tannenburg and the 3rd battle of Ypres. He died on April 15 1994 when I was 3
too bad...backstabbers and enemies to Italy
My grandfather fought in the Southern Front. 11 Italian offensives with men's superiority 3:1 and didn't come through. So-called Vittorio Veneto was an attack on the troops that didn't exist anymore because our Emperor asked for a truce on October 28. Most of the men didn't even have guns and were on their way home. It was the same example of heroism as sinking Viribus Unitis.
the battle began on october 24, the Emperor asked for a truce that was denied
BS. Vittorio Veneto was a real battle unlike on the Western Front, where the Battle of the Marna was a walk through previously invaded territory while Germans' army rebuilt the line. Or the battle in the East, which were just a walk through the Russian territory. And contrary to the Italian front, where AH had always the numerical majority
@@NoName-hg6cc On the contrary: Italians had mostly (not always) numerical superiority. Vittorio Veneto is mostly fiction.
@@abulafios Absolutely no. Italians were mostly always in numerical inferiority.
Vittorio Veneto was a real battle, the victory on the Western Front was just propaganda, like Alliance victory over Russia.
@@abulafios that's utterly FALSE: the Italians WON the battle of Vittorio Veneto, with very minor allied help (51 Italian divisions, 3 british, 2 french, 1 american regiment) against 73 austro-hungarian divisions who collapsed and surrendered. The Italians had 34.000 losses, the austro-hungarian 80.000, and left over 400.000 prisoners into italian hands. Italy won the war and even 1 week before the end of ww1 (4th november instead of 11th november) SO STFU!
The Great War ended in november the 11. Chance the day in the begining of the video.
Also the location is wrong in the begining, that are the Dolomites not m.te Grappa.
-"If a machine gun has 500 bullets, i'll need 700 men." Said an italian officer.
Tell us all those famous Swedish war heroes and history achievements compared to Italy...oh there weren't any...
Wow. These comments. People really have not gotten smarter since 1914-1918.

They would have loved having rifle-grenades. A good tromblon VB would have been well-suited here.
