We have a town named Ventnor in New Jersey USA - on the water in Southern part of the state. When I first saw your video title I figured you must be visiting !

A good excuse to see if the two are linked - and they are ! 1889 the wife of the boss of the land company owning the area had recently been to UK Ventnor, and suggested the name which was adopted for what is now Ventnor City, New Jersey ! Thanks Wikipedia ! The same website tells us that UK Ventnor could have been named in 1617 after the family owning the area "le Vyntener". Maybe something to do with wine making ? Great to hear from you John !

Hello. I have one of those stacked folded dipoles. I can`t say, but I think it`s for 2 meters. It is broken in places and needs cleaning, but it is complete. It came from a farm in New Jersey, along with 46 ft. of tower. I bought the whole thing for $100. Cheers and thanks for the view of the countryside. My mother`s family (Condit) came from Wales to North America in the 1600`s. Always wanted to travel there and see the old sod. 73, KC3BXZ.

I am impressed that not only do they have a fantastic location which they have worked long and hard to get set up, it is even ( at least partially ) powered by solar panels along with the generator ! Eat your heart out Tesla ! Yes you have to get in there somehow, Ray - perhaps dress up as a cow, but one equipped with wire cutters ?

@Steve Terry Thanks for that ! Sounds worth doing, as there are smaller models that are hardly noticeable but still give a good output - hopefully something that will be tried out up there ?

There is a new video up about the location, you can find it by looking for this title on youtube: "Cold War Secret Nuclear Bunker History & Tour - RAF Ventnor R1 ROTOR Isle of Wight" also the link in the video's description to the 28dayslater website shows some photos from back then and more recent. A bit scrolling down shows the signals room which seem to have two icom or yaesu brand receivers and a rotor unit on top. Almost looks like there was some HAM activity back then. 73 J-W the PA3...

I'd love to see inside the building too. I have never seen inside a transmitter tower building but have always wondered what equipment is in them and how it's all wired up. I will be having a holiday on the Isle of Wight in March next year but it's with family on the east side so I doubt I will get any where near Ventnor. If you ever get in, you must post a vid of it :)

Great vid Ray, i have just got myself an Icom 110 euro to listen to the air traffic and the local airstrip near me (Rochester), took it down to Icom and had the firmware upgraded so it picks up the new 8.33Khz spacing and like you said it's all on AM. I am now back in the UK for good, but that's another story for another day, all i can say it got slightly dangerous where i was. Andy M0HLG.
