Good! I’m 68 and started working at age 12. I bought all my school clothes because my Dad wouldn’t pay for it. Whatever...I went out and made my own money and been saving all my life. Lesson is nobody but you can create the life you want. Financial freedom is wonderful... Best Wishes in your life dear. 😊
Hey Shawn can’t tell you how much you have inspired me. I’m 59 last year I bought 20 acres north of Republic Washington I plan to take my tractor up there in September and start working. I have run a manual machine shop for many years but have 0 experience building a cabin. Your honesty in that you didn’t know everything but you kept pushing forward really is very inspiring. I have hunted and fished when time allowed and all ways loved the outdoors. I also love to cook and enjoy those episodes. Just wanted to say don’t stop. There is so many of us that hate our jobs and long for retirement. If I can ever make something for you it would be my honor I have 41 years as a Manuel machinist. Maybe one day we can sit around a camp fire together
Shawn...we go back to the old saying, "if I knew then what I know now!" Some of us didn't have the right people in our lives to provide guidance, so we had to try fail and learn on our own. I am striving to be in your position some day soon. I hope to learn as much as I can from your challenges and accomplishments. Keep the content coming!
Thank you for being yourself and not starting to enjoy yourself too much on the screen, what has happened to lot of RUclipsrs over a time :) You are Great Man, I say it from my heart.
More good solid advice from a very wise and honest man. I love the way you tell it like it is Shawn. Your family is blessed to have such a good man. Thanks.
I love watching your videos. They always center me. All I hear are people complain about one thing or another on Facebook, RUclips, Snapchat it eats away at you.
Shawn, I'm 44 years old and this is a reminder that I still have goals and things I want to accomplish before my kids put me in a home haha! It's time to get it together and start that piggy bank again. I hope your finger is healing nicely, thanks for the video. Take care :)
This is the same talk that was given to me as a teenager. I learned early in life if I wanted to have the life I wanted I had to do what I liked and what I knew I was good at.
Always told my children when they started to earn their own income, if you can't save at least $10 a week, something is wrong with your spending. $10 soon adds up. By paying $10 or $20 extra on your income tax, it's like saving for a year and getting it returned come tax time. Good advice from you as always. Keep up the good work.
Good advice. When i was 20. I ahd a good job. Worked countless hours and banked my extra money. 3 yrs i did this and was able to buy 100 acres of ontario wilderness in the almaguin highlands. Before i knew it we had a child, bought a house cars etc. Property sat idle for 6 yrs. Finally back on track and restarting my dream. You hit it on the head. If you want something dont expect a lottery payout. Work for it. Its even harder saving it. 20 yrs old and all my friends are out partying and travelling. Im working over time. Looking back wouldnt change a thing except staying focused on developing my dream. I believe if you set manageable yet achieveable goals then you will have more success and will be more fullfilled than some who dreams without a game plan. Cut from the same cloth. Keep making the videos. Ill keep watching
Excellent advice for anyone wanting to live self reliant. Sadly the majority of today's young generation is consumed in "instant gratification" and will not have the where with all to do the hard work to get there. As always very informative!
Thank you for the talk. Thinking about this also. Made my first outside kiln. Got more work to do and more testing. Putting big troughs in for garden to sell some things I grow.
I enjoy your video, I would love to keep life simple and be able to live out in the outdoor. I enjoyed your no nonsense advice. I love your dog Cali. I love to see more of your wife and daughters.
You make a good point with sharing and monetizing resources you have. My wife and I rent our home to two different tenants, bought an RV and actually live on the property. I can take care of the house maintenance wise and am able to provide a reasonable rent for the tenants. We all benefit.
Shawn James, you are a fantastic human. Such an inspirational motivating guy. I wish i could do what you do. My dream is to build a log cabin and record it to show my future family. Thank you for being awesome.
You are such an inspiration. The one thing the younger generation has going for it is that the few of us that are willing to put in the extra work will be rewarded better because the lack of drive, work ethic, and determination is much higher in todays yourh then it was a few decades ago.
People think that going to work is misery, but I strongly disagree. I am happy and content when I'm just working. I say person should work smart and then work hard. Patience and frugality are great principles too. Thanks Shawn, really great tips you share.
A lot of great information and well delivered. I have been thinking a lot along the same lines for my career. Passive income or multiple income strsams offers a lot of stability as opposed to the traditional "work the 9-5 for 1 employer" method. Splendid video
Hi Shawn, another great piece of advice! really got me interested in owning my own business rather than working for someone else! Great inspiration thanks! :)
I have been working towards this lifestyle since 1990 and I am getting close. I am 56 and retiring early to start a debt free homestead. Living on $1200 a month will be hard but doable if you use your skills to survive. Most people don't want to give up starbucks every morning and not serious about this lifestyle.
Great video for youngster subscribers! I believe the issue among young people is not having enough experienced people around them to give them advice when needed. More often, they may not want to sit down and listen to someone's experience since we all know how our ego get us when we were young. May be those have experiences should reach out to them more often so these young people will not waste too much time on searching their true own way of life....
MingWLee - Superb point! Sadly, our sense of community has broken down, us seniors have largely been marginalized, disrespected & unappreciated. It IS difficult to find a forum, venue or opportunity to impart any knowledge or wisdom that we may have to young people, but it's not impossible...We all rub shoulders with them somewhere. I love befriending kiddos in any social setting I can find - church, classes, social events etc., & after establishing a rapport with them & their families I say something like "hey, how'd you like to go for a hike, go for a picnic to a pretty spot, or a camping overnight?" And while I have that impressionable young person with me, enjoying our time together, I teach them how to start a fire & cook over it, make a try stick, identify animal tracks, wild plants for food or medicine, etc. Sometimes, you can foster a passion, create wonderful lasting memories, be instrumental in encouraging them to work hard for their dreams...just one person at a time...
Ty for your passion of the free life style so to speak. Its hard work. And I believe I was made to be a hermit of sort. I love the outdoors. And the idea of being off grid and self reliant as much as I can b really appeals to me. And the wife as long as she can have a.c. and a pc in the wild. Witch I know can be done. Just cost more and takes a lot of planning and patience. Get advice of never give up on your dreams. Look and work hard for what you want.
More videos about this please! One of your first videos you said you would talk about 'financial freedom'. I think this is what blocks most people from this lifestyle. What are you doing to sustain this lifestyle? Keep up the good work! Love all your videos.
In case he doesn't get the chance to respond to all comments, several things that I've noticed that he does includes affiliate marketing. In the description of his videos, he shows where you can buy the stuff that he's using and some of those links go back to amazon. In this video, he mentions videography and photography and writing. So, along with advertisements on RUclips, he's writing for a magazine and taking pictures and then the videos that he uploads here. I would imagine he sells out his labor as a construction worker and handyman when he needs/wants to as well. He has multiple streams of revenue coming into his portfolio which is very smart, but also takes a lot of effort to build.
Good advice. People usually waste most of there money on entertainment or buying on credit cards. Pay off your debt, live on a budget, and use your spare time to earn extra cash.
So much great advice. I hope this inspires lots of folks to follow some of these ideas. I do agree with you, that people will be sharing homes and things in the not too distant future. Wish I had thought of these things in the past too. Thanks for sharing so clear y the lessons you learned. You are a kind man. 🐱💞
Hi Shawn ! Great video with so much informative ideas. I always look forward to your videos. By the way, Hope your finger is healing fast...greetings from Florida, Mary
Truer words were never spoken. Great advice. I’d like to add, don’t spend the extra money as soon as you made it. I could always find a way to make extra money but didn’t have a plan for what to do with it So it got spent. (I did figure it out before it was too late.) Great video as always. Thanks
Your such a good man Shawn, you really enjoy helping folks with important insights and do such a good job of making those insights clear. Hats off to you Pal, .. it's Nobel. ... Mike.
Great vid Shawn, I have a couple of business ideas to take advantage of the tourism in Newfoundland but my dept is my real problem. Pretty much our income just covers the bills with any extra just barely taking care of the kids minor hockey. Hopefully when I get my dept paid down I can move forward with my ideas and that will also keep me home year round instead of leaving my family for work. And I'll definitely be passing on messages like yours to my kids so they dont make the same mistakes I have.
Shawn, Quite right. There is a lot to be said for imagination, hard work, common sense and having a goal in life. No quick wins, but a steady application of effort in a consistent manner. Your dialogue clearly shows you have buckets of all these things. Good on you. How does it go? :- "When will I be there? I don't know. When will I get there? Mighty certain. All I know is I am on my way. Got a dream boy, got a song. Paint your wagon and come along". If you know what i mean. Regards Stephen.
I remember wanting my own business after meeting you . I think I know what machine you were talking about. I love your videos and advice. Just catching up now after a long work year. Keep it up.
Excellent points. Learning to seriously look for opportunities is vital and requires some flexibility (you bought used, not new, for example). Also, searching for a great deal on the land is a way to really make those savings go further. After the dot-com bubble burst, I basically went broke, and got a part-time job outside of my profession (engineering). Then another and another, until I was working 4 part time jobs. One lesson I learned from that was, it is virtually impossible to lose them all at once, like a full-time job layoff. The diversity gave me stability, and I plan to follow that principle in my retirement. It sounds like you're already doing it: writing, RUclips, merchandise, etc.
Thanks for another great video Shawn. You have an artists eye that makes it easy for us to fall in love with the wild beauty you call home. Perhaps you would talk to us about the equipment and the mindset you use to make your videos?
Inspirational Shawn! I laughed, Not going to earn fifty grand in a week.......Legally!!! Kids these days don't want to run heavy equipment or get their hands dirty! Been in the construction industry, a few years. Am crippled now. No wonder people want the easy way of life. Just doesn't work out that way for all.
awesome... i was thinking the same thing when i started watching your videos. i am on a 5 yr plan and ill be aiming for land in the next 8 months. keep up the awesome work....
This is a video I would have loved to hear about 40 years ago. Still happy to hear it today, because it applies to any age. There are a couple more things everyone can do to maximize their income, and one of those is minimizing spending. That cup of coffee bought "to go" on the way to work--just take a coffee you make at home instead. Make a healthy lunch. Don't eat out all the time, because it doesn't save money, and cooking is not a hard skill to learn. Make wise food choices, Potato chips today = pounds to lose down the road. Sure, indulge now and then, but keep a close eye on what stuff costs. Every dollar you don't spend is one you can put in the "retirement/cabin/land/pay off car or house faster" fund. When you need to buy something, see if you can find it on closeout sale. I can't claim to have always been financially smart, quite the opposite, but one thing I always did was look for sales. I still struggle with over-spending, but have finally made put an end to the credit card debt, and stay within means. One way to make a little money and really feel good about it is clean out your closets and garage, and sell things off, so you only have what you need and use. Only keep what you need, use, and love. And put money away for emergencies that come up, so you don't go into debt when you have to pay for necessary upkeep and repairs on your house or whatever. There's a whole mindset for making/saving money, so listen to Shawn. :)
Yeah wish I would have known then what I know now. So glad you are doing u tube and sharing these things with young folks maybe you can touch lives which I know is part of your mission and it is fabulous. Back when we were young all of this technology like u tube wasn’t there....wow what a difference that would have made and is such a huge growth potential for people now
Great video Shawn with great advice. It’s too bad and frustrating that hindsight is 20/20 for all of us, but that’s life. I think everybody over the age of 50 and certainly 60 says or thinks “man I wish I knew at 20 what I know now!” I know I and my brothers have said it often enough and I remember my dad, who is gone 25 years now said it. Hopefully your message gets through to at least a few young people. Hows the wound?
6:35 "I had kids at the time" hahaha, I bet they're still around somewhere :) I know exactly what you meant... you had kids LIVING WITH YOU at the time.... but it struck me as funny. Great video as usual
Thanks Shaun , that's good advice ! I once herd a theory that it's good to create different streams of income big or small they all help build our financial base , and I think that's true . Landlording gives you a lot of cash for doing next to nothing , compared to hard labour , that's a dream job :) choose wisely folks !
Hey it's always great that you share your wisdom, I'm thankful for it.I'm in hardscape right now in the GTA (interlock, flagstone, grading, etc.) and it's tough work, but fulfilling. I'm thankful I get to be outside all day, and I do enjoy the work, but I fear my body is taking too much of a hit for it. I'm starting to get thoughts that maybe I need to change it up, but it's tough to swap jobs once you're comfortable... I gotta figure out some stuff, but in the meantime your videos help a bit at least. I started doing this RUclips thing a bit because all you awesome Canadian outdoor RUclipsrs inspired me to have a bit of a creative outlet. I think having a hobby I care about definitely helps, but I don't expect to make money off this, just makes me happy. Keep up the great work Shawn 🇨🇦👍
Everything you said is knowledge that can only be appreciated by a person who has lived as long as you have. "With age comes wisdom." Luckily, about one percent of your viewers who are under 40 years of age will actually take this advice to heart. And you have truly helped that 1%. But, please don't endorse uber. It's a $6 an hour job at best, and I can think of at least 100 things I'd rather do for $6 an hour.
Hey Shawn, could you do a video on how to pick a good property for the living style similar to you've chosen? Like what are the factors that you consider when you evaluate a property?
Hay Shawn. Has anyone ever told you that you look and sound like Kevin Costner? Any way you’re a great inspiration for all. love your skills and love watching how you’re building up on your property. 👍🏼
If I knew then what I know now. Life would have been much different but I really can't complain. Life's struggles have gotten me to where I am today. I to have made mistakes. Even to this day but I only having 2 more mortgage payments and zero debt. Fortunately having a well paying railroad job that comes with amazing health benefits is to hard to tell them to go pound salt. So 40 hours it is but that's not going to stop me from buying a TimberKing Sawmill. Tools always pay for themselves in time. Don't let life pass you by because life is what you make of it. It's yours for the taken. So just wake up and do it !!!
Good Evening Shawn! Here what I did, I went to my bank and set up a "RRSP account" and direct deposited $25.00 a month from my checking account. It has been invested in very safe investments! You can do more amount if you can afford to do so. After "TEN YEARS" it has grown in to surprising amount. A big advantage thing about the RRSP is that they are tax deductible. Second thing, people should take advantage of the tax saving account. You are allowed to put $5,000.00 a year in to a tax saving account. It is non taxable, earn interest, and allow to take it out any time without penalties. I recommend book call "WEALTHY BARBER" by David Chilton! I found it very easy to read and it gave very good advises.
Nope, it’s too late for you :). You’re only as old as you feel and it’s never too late. Plenty of people throughout history have become successful late in life.
Thank you , for sharing ' good info' you have what it takes now days in this society . Portland Oregon housing is very high rent and real estate pricing' and it is getting harder and harder to find housing with out paying an arm and a leg for. god bless you ' for all your hard work and efforts to inform others with info and ideas' . i think it will eventually go back to old school barter ' systems' see you next week on My self reliance at the off grid cabin' thanks for another great video.
One thing you forgot.is take care of yourself.im 56 and everything is shot.knees ankles.i have a moutain that i cant climb anymore.scraping by....great vid as always.
As with all things patience and hard work are key! And to all you young people in Canada go find a oil field camp job. Yes its super hard work but it pays great. I bought my land and house free and clear in less than a year! Save you money! You don't NEED a brand new Pickuptruck!
When I was that age (young) I had just enough to pay the rent and put food on the table, I did try to save and had a job where my employer contributed to my retirement fund. Saving is what one should do - no argument. Sometimes easier said than done.
Shawn, you know how to live dangerously! "...wife to pay for...." But you're right, take the opportunity and run with it, do what you're good at. It maybe a big step or jump but there is no triumph unless you try.
one real barrier in living your style life in the US is medical insurance. unless your have a job that has benefits you are looking at well over $1200 a month for basic family coverage. I guess I would suggest saving money and than move to somewhere in Canada to live a minimum lifestyle. Having insurance really opens up opportunities to be your own boss and explore different types of independent jobs. Sad situation in US On health care
This is why I'm starting to save money now at the age of 15
Good! I’m 68 and started working at age 12. I bought all my school clothes because my Dad wouldn’t pay for it. Whatever...I went out and made my own money and been saving all my life. Credit card debt, car loans, college debt etc. Great anchors that will take your precious time and hold you back from complete self-reliance.
More good solid advice from a very wise and honest man. I love the way you tell it like it is Shawn. Your family is blessed to have such a good man. Thanks.

I want this for all those kids out there! I hope they take this advice!❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the talk. Thinking about this also. Made my first outside kiln. Got more work to do and more testing.
Putting big troughs in for garden to sell some things I grow.
Sound advice Shawn
Love the way the cabin is coming along keep up the good work
Thank you
You’re so correct about wages then and cost of living today Shawn I couldn’t agree more!
Half right, entry level house here is 1 million.
Love the line, "there is no lottery, you got to work for it." Thumbs up!
I enjoy your video, I would love to keep life simple and be able to live out in the outdoor. I enjoyed your no nonsense advice.
I love your dog Cali. I love to see more of your wife and daughters.
Patience.. there is no crystal ball just yourself! A long road with a view of the horizon can be your inspiration to attain your goals
I can't tell you how much this video helps man please keep doing videos like this!
You make a good point with sharing and monetizing resources you have. My wife and I rent our home to two different tenants, bought an RV and actually live on the property. I can take care of the house maintenance wise and am able to provide a reasonable rent for the tenants. We all benefit.

Looking back I could have done a lot more. When your young time goes slow but gets faster every year. Another great video Shawn.
Good solid advice Shawn, one thing you didn't mention. Choose the right Wife and you will be fine, Get it wrong your finished before you begin.
HalfQ ...or husband.
ouch
There are far more men who are deadbeats than there are women. But, I hear ya. Make sure to not attract a bad spouse.
@Christaps half the time ex-husbands don't pay child support, either. Neither mine, nor my daughter's. Not easy supporting kids by yourself.
That's in another video.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I can see you speak from the heart with right intentions.

Actually one of your best videos, thank you Shawn
Great substance you give on these videos Mr James
The advice is sound. But most people want it "now" and so we have lost the ability to wait for things. Accumulate slowly, and reap the rewards latter.

Shawn you are very inspirational love your work
And when you get a pay raise set that money aside, don't spend it on extra stuff, keep on living the way you did before the raise.
Agreed, I do all my own renovations and building which saves me 50 % or more on the cost of doing things.
Good advice. People usually waste most of there money on entertainment or buying on credit cards. Pay off your debt, live on a budget, and use your spare time to earn extra cash.
Shawn it is relaxing to hear you. Thanks for sharing

Keep it up.
WHATS THE MACHINERY?
Good piece Shawn, I'm not vocal on this channel, but good on you. Nice reveal.
awesome... i was thinking the same thing when i started watching your videos. i am on a 5 yr plan and ill be aiming for land in the next 8 months. keep up the awesome work....
Hi Shawn - you truly are a bright light in an increasingly dark world. Take care.
Thanks for the words of wisdom Shawn.
another great one sent this to my 25 year old son , thank you
This is a video I would have loved to hear about 40 years ago. :)
Good Advice. I try to learn as many things as possible. Never know when a bit of knowledge will come in handy.
Yeah wish I would have known then what I know now. So glad you are doing u tube and sharing these things with young folks maybe you can touch lives which I know is part of your mission and it is fabulous. Back when we were young all of this technology like u tube wasn’t there....wow what a difference that would have made and is such a huge growth potential for people now
Hi Shawn. Outstanding advice for everyone. We all waste money on things we don't really need. Always nice to have a nest egg.
You're awesome Shawn James!!
I've been moonlighting for years and now I build longbows to help put in the kitty. Takes alot of focus
Hi Shawn some great advice 🤔🤔🤔 let hope the younger generation listing so will and some wont 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thank you and thanks for asking. Healing pretty well :)
6:35 "I had kids at the time" hahaha, I bet they're still around somewhere :) I know exactly what you meant... you had kids LIVING WITH YOU at the time.... but it struck me as funny. Great video as usual
Thanks for these insight Shawn. Key word is: SMART. :)
Helpful, substantial information. 😊. Thanks!
Not every body is handy like you man !
Excellent video. Totally agree.
Great video man and very helpful advice. Thank you man
Solid work ethic advice :) Thanks.
definitely share this video to the world!!
Thank you ! Any advice for people already late in life! If only I knew when I was younger.
Nope, it’s too late for you :). You’re only as old as you feel and it’s never too late. Plenty of people throughout history have become successful late in life.
knock um out shawn, great video once again !!

As with all things patience and hard work are key! And to all you young people in Canada go find a oil field camp job. Yes its super hard work but it pays great. I bought my land and house free and clear in less than a year! Save you money! You don't NEED a brand new Pickuptruck!
Awesome!
FarmerDIY great info there. I would like to know more about Oil Field Camp Jobs
Most don't have the self-discipline these days, and lose sight of their dream, when it's easier to party it all away!
Thank you for the good advice Sir
"Legally". (chuckle)
Very informative and motivating. Thanks ! ! !
(again))
Hello from Greece. Great Job!!
Shawn you are a inspiration i love your videos
When I was that age (young) I had just enough to pay the rent and put food on the table, I did try to save and had a job where my employer contributed to my retirement fund. Saving is what one should do - no argument. Sometimes easier said than done.
Thanks for the advices.
Excellent video, hi from Australia
I did not know you had a second Chanel, nice video great advice
Shawn, you know how to live dangerously! "...wife to pay for...."
But you're right, take the opportunity and run with it, do what you're good at.
