  • So, hear me out here. Tom Cruise is the star and producer of the wonderful Mission Impossible series. Fabulous movies, great entertainment, amazing stunts....but really, should he be doing them?
Is it too dangerous for the biggest actor in the world and the producer of one of the biggest franchises on the planet to risk his neck when he employs many of the greatest stunt performers on his movies?
    Watch...here comes the pitch

I have to agree with some of the comments here. Yes, there are stunt professionals that could do what he's doing but it is HIM doing it. Thats's what makes the movie and that's what sells the movie. When he's hanging off the plane you say "what if the plane crashed". There's just as much chance of the plane crashing into Tom's trailer while he's in it than there is while he's on it. Love you John and your Chanel but TC is, to me, a stuntman who acts rather than an actor who does stunts. Keep up the great work.

You have to give him credit for hanging in there on these gags. Whatever happens happens. His call. Chin stuck into the frame. Its me!

I think at this point Tom Cruise has earned the right to put himself in an element of danger. I know that the modern stunt industry is geared around safety, but I like that Cruise reminds me of an older class of daredevil - like your Houdinis, your Evil Knievels, that bloke that wire-walked between the twin towers - where the public spectacle is part of the story. It doesn't matter how convincingly you can recreate these things with CGI. The point is that you go into these films knowing that Tom Cruise has gone (as you put it) 'above and beyond' in order to present you with an exciting piece of cinema, and that makes all the difference to me. I wish there was more of that adventurous spirit in modern film-making.
Honestly, if he gets himself killed someday, so be it. There are countless professionals out there (racing drivers, free solo climbers, stunt pilots) who accept that their work might kill them. And sometimes it does. But that element of risk is part of the thrill and the romance. It's why Niki Lauda got back in his car. We can't let health and safety completely kill the very human desire to do mad things sometimes. Even if it means a movie might get shut down (won't somebody think of the insurance companies!)
Also, I believe that Cruise has done enough to be seen as a stunt performer in his own right, and not just an actor that's taking their work.

Exactly. The fact that people get jealous because of it, shows how old fashioned the stunt community is. Yes, everybody can do it with the right practice.
If somebody else would do the stunts the movies wouldn't have any special impact. He's doing it because it benefits the damn material. And he's doing it for more than 20 years and yet people want him to not do it.
Everybody involved in this movie knows the risks of a potential shutdown.

I think he's a bit jealous that a damn actor does all this stuff very convincingly.

A classic example of an actor doing stunts they didn’t need to do is The first great train robbery with Sean Connery on the top of that moving train…So close to getting his head smashed.

He has set a precedent for himself which he will either stop when the Movie series stop being made or something happens

You may be right, in fact, you probably are quite right. TC shouldn’t be doing these gags because if something happens to him the production shut down. However, at this point it’s become part of the marketing campaign. The audience is now expecting Tom to do these outlandish, crazy stunts, and according to last film, even though you barely seen him jump off the motorcycle with the parachute, the huge marking campaign was that he did himself. They even released a featurette of the stunt months before the film was released. Why does he do it really? Marketing! And I’m sure he’s having a hell of a lot of fun doing it. I know I would.😂

What a bunch of nonsense. Everyone in the production of that movie knows what's up. It's part of the risk and it what makes this movie stand out against all the other CGI infested fakery we see these days.
The fact that TC does this make him a reason to go to the cinema.
There are enough other movies where stuntman and women can do their thing.
You act like this is some kind of social welfare thing. My God man. Even if he has an issue, everybody will be ready for it.
So, he IS a stuntman within the disciplines he's working. You have to let go of the actor thing. He obviously isn't only an actor anymore. No reason to let a stuntman do it if you can do it yourself and elevate the movie with it.

Who cares ? It's the norm now. He has probably the biggest ego of any actor. Vic Armstrong had to reign in Harrison telling him he was taking food off his plate. Harrison appreciated it and cut back on the stunts. Tom isn't that generous. He's doing someone out of a job but he's selling the film.

It’s the way he forces his co-stars in to doing action they don’t want to or arn’t trained to.
