Super helpful review. Hopefully Taxa is addressing your observations. There always room for improvement with any rig and the Tiger Moth seems pretty sweet. But the rivets not holding is a big deal for an off-road rig.
Thank you! Yes I believe Taxa has addressed a number of the previous year shortcomings. Regarding rivets, since that video I have had no further rivet failures. That’s a relief.
REALLY well done video review! Considering the Tiger Moth as an upcoming purchase. You've made some excellent observations for improvement: spare tire relocation, corner bracket stability, switching sleeping orientation (and reading lights), mud flaps on wheel wells, pull out steps on both side and rear, relocating tongue box against camper, heavy duty rivets, lock tight screws, better access to front storage while in bed configuration, a rear canopy that mounts below the roof line... I wonder if Taxa is paying attention here?
Dave G thanks Dave. Kinda doubt they’re tuned in but maybe? Customer service from them has been challenging but I just plan to fix whatever I break myself.
Our 2018 Tigermoth also has the ARB awning and is about an inch or two taller than the garage door frame. What works for me is to crank up (down?) the nose wheel, which in turn lowers the rear end...and then I can get it under our 7ft garage door frame. Maybe that will work for you too. [Edit] just to be clear...I disconnect the trailer in front of the garage, crank the front up, then push it into the garage by hand.
Matt Grimes yes that worked. I got a system down now that is pretty easy. I put the little wheel on my mechanics floor jack. I find it easier to steer that way. 👍
Thank you for the very thorough coverage of your unit. The most important factor that I and many others have fallen victim to, is poor quality builds in RVs. This company and model seems to be pretty rugged, all in all. For my kind of camping, with usually a bathhouse nearby, this should be entirely suitable for that.
LOL, “I’ve met small people”. Great review. I am catching up on Tiger Moth videos since I am interested in buying one and glad I am short. Ha ha. Thank you for the good advice. Keep tall my friend. 😊
That was a great review. It's quite obvious they need to figure out out a better way of fastening the walls down and for the amount of rivets they used in the overall build it's got me wondering why they just didn't use nuts and bolts. Nice to know about the spare tire too. I have the exact same Jeep and love it. Thanks for the tips, safe travels.
I've seen spares mounted like that on others or worse hung under the frame 😢 There was a NATO truck, i forget if DAF or Citroën that had the spare mounted at the breakover point on a stub axle so it could rotate 😅
I peeled the decals off mine shortly after I got it. It looks a lot better. I also picked up a gear loft from overland taylor. It works really good with this camper and is so much better than the flimsy shock cord ceiling nets.
Thanks for posting this. We had a similar problem with our awning and found out we could adjust how high our garage door opens. We set it to open to maximum and amazingly our awning (on our jeep) fit. whew.
Excellent vid. Genuinely informative. We’ve been considering the Tiger Moth and your impressions are food-for-thought. I may have to spend more dough and move up to the Cricket. Many thanks
Great in depth review... thank you! I've looked at it all and I think I'm sold on this, perfect for me and my dog. Would a Toyota Tacoma v6 tow that pretty good? Thanks again
Hey, yes your Tacoma would be just fine. I tow it now with my Gladiator and I think that has similar power as the Tacoma. I don’t really notice it’s there much. Have fun!
Try raising the front jack, and airing down your tires and pushing the trailer by hand...you may fit in the garage that way. Also, you can buy aftermarket screens for the front of the trailer that attach to the front frame. They will deflect mud, and stones.
I appreciate the time you put into your video. I am considering this unit for my Yukon adventures (including the Dempster). I have a rear swing door on my car, will that front jack get in the way? Does it swivel away?? Cheers
I think it might get it the way. I had to mod mine when I got a truck so the tailgate would clear. Also, the Dempster may be a tall order for this unit. Not sure if it’s up to that kind of abuse.
Does yours have a ball hitch or the articulating hitch? I see the new ones finally feature an articulating hitch, which to me, should have always been standard on all Taxa's trailers.
It has some interesting features, and like the focus on light weight and simplicity… …but can’t understand why it slopes down towards the front. As you noted, it makes sitting at the table impossible, and sleeping with your head at the low end also. Many other teardrops would be more comfortable and versatile for a lot less money.
I have a 2019 Cricket and have one wall near kitchen, left side coming loose, just glued there, I have several rivets coming loose, and now I have a gas leak! These campers are fun, but not as durable as I though they would be, and I don't even go off road!!
Nice review ... after we looked up the price, still coughing and choking. Cool indeed, but could not justify the $. Likely going to go with a no frill 1940's style teardrop or hiker.
Tricia Harrod thanks for watching. Yes, the price point is definitely more than one would expect if comparing to typical Jayco or other main stream builders. Hiker makes a great trailer for the price. Can’t go wrong there.
Informative. One little nibblet was that there are different valves for water. I wish there was a hybrid of the moth and the cricket. Outside pantry, just taller in front without pop up.
Yes, a hybrid in the small package would be great. I know some other manufacturers make something like that but they are roughly double the price. The Moth isn't exactly cheap to begin with.
Good vid. I have a 2017 TM. I plan on welding in triangles at all the joints on the frame for rigidity and maybe add some stringers length wise to kinda box everything in. The guy that broke his TM frame carrying a lot of tongue weight posted pics on the Taxa Facebook group which showed a weak point that could be addressed as well. I think a few hundred bucks in welding will prevent alot of the flexing cutting down on the stress on the rivets and frame to floor hardware. I also plan on changing all the screws for the frame and kitchen tracks to through bolts with locking nuts. It would be super easy to have the tire mount modded to be up higher. Lastly id cut/extend the hitch about a foot and add an articulating hitch. The short hitch causes the TM to suck at backing up and the closer it is the more prone to damage from jackknifing.
William Sealy those are all great points. I’ll probably keep picking away at little tasks to optimize this little trailer. That’s part of the fun for me as well! The fellow on our FB group that broke his probably was over weight by a factor of 2 or 3. He had that thing loaded! That fact that he did the Dempster like that really speaks to how well engineered these little trailers really are. I love it.
Great video - loved how thorough you were. Quick question - you mentioned camping with kids, were do they sleep? Do you have the rooftop tent for the Tiger Moth? I am considering this and we are a family of 3 (2 adults +1 teenage girl) Thanks!
Thank you! We have 2 teenage girls and put the Rooftop tent on the Jeep. We don’t want to have the trailer moving every time one of them moves in the nice and vice versa. I have seen some people put a smaller RTT on the trailer so it does work if you don’t care about the movement.
Thanks for the video! I continue to watch this video to get ideas of what I need to look for/pay attention to as I travel! How did you string up the Paracord for the door? That seems like a great idea that will prolong the life of those attach points on the door and the rig!
Thanks for the feed back! For the back door, the paracord is fastened inside to the main center steel rib at the ceiling and then on the steel bracket where the gas strut is fastened to the door. I lengthen it to the point that the paracord is tight just before the door is completely open.
Great review, thanks very much. My wife and I are looking at buying a 2019 version. Any advice now that you're several years in? I definitely plan to use it as you have (for rec site camping and boondocking on forest service roads).
Glad to hear it helped. I’m on year 4 now and still love it. I am at the point of some items needing attention but not in a surprising way. Foam seals are compressing, still working though. The fan is on its last legs. The cheap OEM battery is nearly done. But none of those would be unique to the TM. I’d go for it! Do check all fasteners. I had to redo and lock tight many of the. That’s probably the biggest item to be proactive about. Have fun!
@@wejumpedin another question just jumped to mind. Do you have the regular ball hitch on your trailer? Any issues with that on rougher roads? I’m wondering if something like a fully articulating hitch like a max coupler is possible or necessary.

I’ve never understood why these rugged trailers have all terrain tires. Isn’t traction irrelevant for something being towed? Seems like sidewall strength would be the most important thing. I suspect they are just what is available.
For most normal situations, like on pavement, you’d be correct. However for how I use the TM, I do find value in the more aggressive tread pattern for a number of reasons. And to clarify, these are ST tires, they just have the tread of an aggressive AT. 1. On slippery, steep down hill sections the trailer tires are able to provide braking assistance. That has proven to be of high value multiple times when things get a bit sketchy. The trailer can control itself rather than push the tow vehicle. 2. When we are off camber and it’s muddy, there is less of a chance that the trailer slides sideways, possibly into trees or worse, a steep ditch. 3. They provide better protection against punctures when off-road and especially when on trails with sharp rocks or sticks. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the review - very useful. Im thinking of the overland 2021 tiger moth or the woolly bear. We go off road a lot so im glad to hear that you have taken this off pavement with success.

@@wejumpedin Oh, can i ask another stupid question: we would also need to bring some extra gas on trips cause our xterra is a pig and we go into the back country. Good review. I know there isn't any 100% good camper. I looked at the Tiger Moth prior to purchasing the camper I ultimately purchased. I think it is a decent camper; however, like you said in your review, there are many little things and I've read people had issues with leaking. All of the little things and the leak issue kind of kept me from purchasing this considering the price. Taxa campers are "pricey" and they should be built better (maybe more attention to detail) considering the money you spend on it.
N C I purchased a VRV flyer. This was a small company and the founder/owner went on to develop another type of camper and he started another company. Prior to him doing the VRV, we worked for Intek. If you look at the Intek Flyer, they are very similar to my camper. IfVRV existed, I would recommend them.
Thanks for watching! Glad you found one that suits you. That was the purpose of the video. When I was shopping there wasn't a great in depth one on the Tigermoth. Enjoy getting out!
Jason Smith on the kitchen slider and back door they very effective. The wing door has a small gap where the gasket doesn’t quite align with the frame. Surprisingly that doesn’t let too much dust in. I have notice that the gasket is starting to peel off. I’ll have to replace that soon.
Nice looking rig. That tread pattern is for drive wheels. I don't see any reason for those to be on a trailer. More conventional trailer tires would help the fuel mileage.
Hey thanks for watching. The tire tread also really helps for breaking on off-road travel I do a lot of and that definitely makes it safer. Fuel mileage...I’m towing with a Jeep so that’s not something I set out in the beginning to optimize.
Yes I still own it. I’m still very happy with it. Nothing of note has changed or deteriorated. I’ll be doing another review to update everyone so watch for that.
Ended up ordering a Pando from Off Grid Trailers. More money for sure, but the build quality is fantastic. I looked long and hard at Taxa though, they seem so fun and different. Haven't taken possession of the new trailer yet but it should be done within a few weeks here. Thanks again for the great video! I'll subscribe right away.

Dennis Feeney I gotta day it’s gets pretty bad. Down to 0C/32F it’s not bad if you keep the fan going. Getting down to -20C/-4F I’ve found the best way was not to have the fan going. It seems counterintuitive but at the temp, I had more condensation when I ran the fan. Either, bring a towel when below freezing.
Burke Fox believe it or not, I’m towing less than half of what it’s rated for. I think a lot has to do with the trailer shape. It a brick with an air damn (rolled up awning). Still love it😁

I don’t have personal experience as of yet but I would say some of the issues have been solved in the revision but not all.
Thanks for the video. How are the gaskets on the doors and kitchen slider ? Does it keep all the dust out ?
A regular trailer tire will not withstand the gravel and rocks. Plus if you are trying to slowdown or stop a highway tire is just going to slide.
Great review!
Assuming you still own the TigerMoth, are you still happy with it? Or do you want something else? Thanks!
Yes I still own it. I’m still very happy with it. Nothing of note has changed or deteriorated. I’ll be doing another review to update everyone so watch for that.
This certainly helped convince me to stay away from Taxa.
I’m glad it was helpful for you decision! What did you end up buying instead?
Ended up ordering a Pando from Off Grid Trailers. More money for sure, but the build quality is fantastic. I looked long and hard at Taxa though, they seem so fun and different. Haven't taken possession of the new trailer yet but it should be done within a few weeks here. Thanks again for the great video! I'll subscribe right away.
@@JM-tn8xx great choice! A friend of my has one. Very nice and robust.
Can I ask how much you paid? I'm about to buy one and don't know the markup on these.
Skelevra SK in Canada, it was $23,500 if I remember correctly. That’s the Trek model with a few extra accessories.
I don't normally do this but I have a NEW 2018 Tiger Moth Trek I can sell for $13,437. Options Include Gravel Guard, Jerry Can, Thule Roof Rack, Tongue Box, Awning and a Primos Profile 2 burner stove. Give Steve a call at 662-284-9996 if you are interested.
Thank you
Several reviews have shown the Taxa’s seem to collect dust - so I worry about dust leaks. Late life asthmatic guy..
Good review.
what's the vgw on it as is thanks
2000lbs.
*Not my 'Thing' but interesting to look at*
How is condensation inside when it gets colder? Thanks!
How much it cost ?
You have to go to their website and build to your spec for exact pricing but I believe they start around $25k USD.
@wejumpedin wow pricey indeed, thanks
Heallo
losing half of your MPG ??? Jeep must have over rated the tow capability
Burke Fox believe it or not, I’m towing less than half of what it’s rated for. I think a lot has to do with the trailer shape. It a brick with an air damn (rolled up awning). Still love it😁
