@@cdogthehedgehog6923no really, it made everyone mindlessly say “Disney bad dreamworks good” and even act like Ruby Gilman (which was an ok movie for me) was better than anything Disney has created in the last 3 years
For Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I don't say, "more movies like this, please." I say, "Put the same amount of effort as this movie." It didn't ruin their reputation by being too good. It made us expect the same level of effort put in this movie to be put into their other films. If The Wild Robot is a return for them, then I hope it starts improving for their later projects.
I respectfully disagree with your take because it feels like you are using "effort" and "results" interchangeably. A filmmaking team might put their entire passion and determination in the movie but it might not be well received by audiences. For example, recently we got Kingdom of Planet of Apes, which for me as a major disappointment despite still being a good and enjoyable movie but I will still praise the new director Wes Ball. It felt like he had a lot of passion for the movie and I respect his creative vision. Others who were disappointed by the movie are saying "Just bring back Matt Reeves" but not me. I am still interested in how Wes Ball wants to expand the franchise. I dislike it that when a movie is critically acclaimed, people say "The filmmaking staff was very passionate about the movie" and when the movie is negatively received they will say "This movie was made with no passion or care at all". So overall my point is just that the finished movie is not a measurement of how much effort the filmmaking crew put into it. Now with the release of Wild Robot, I am sure it will again have the Last Wish effect where people will expect every future DreamWorks movie to be a masterpiece.
The dreamworks fandom made me less interested in seeing the movie and I haven’t gotten around to it since. The part that really irritates me is that these people overpraise everything non Disney but doesn’t even give Disney the same treatment when they do make a hit. Unfortunately I’ve seen a couple of Sonic fans bringing down Mufasa on instagram but luckily it seems extremely small.
DreamWorks fandom is just toxic. They’re doing the same thing with the Wild Robot. I swear if anyone said the movie was mid people would literally attack them. It was the same thing they did with Puss in Boots 2 attacked anyone who said it was bad.
Once this movie came out everyone started acting like dreamworks was amazing when in reality like 2 years ago everyone was shitting on them, so yes this did ruin their reputation by making people expect too much from them
This is unfortunately true. Now DreamWorks definitely did dominate over Disney, but in 2022. But sadly this movie made a lot of us forget that DreamWorks is hit or miss. Not all their movies are gonna be great or masterpieces. Some are gonna be bad or just ok. But now everytime DreamWorks makes a movie that’s not PIB2 level, they get mad at DW for not making a masterpiece when that is just not who they are. PIB2 is what I’d say was a blessing and a curse
Its why i dislike the DreamWorks fanbase. I tend to enjoy majority of DW movies but looking at how the fanbase tend to only praise movies like Shrek, KFP, HTTYD, Megamind, and now PIB2. When it comes to those movies, its all people tend to care about from Dreamworks, but when it comes to movies like Trolls, Bossbaby, Sharktales, Bee Movie, Etc, people would go bizarre over those movies like its the worse thing created in human history. Me personally, I enjoy the Trolls franchise alot more than most other ppl. Sharktales is a family classic, and i think bossbaby sequel is at least decent compared to the first. But people only overlook these movies only cuz they dont have the standard of a "true dreamworks masterpiece". Now they expect dreamworks to pump out hit after hit. and when it dont, its all a sudden a bad studio. Every movie studio suffers this ofc but it just seems like dw tends to get the worse of it.
@@jonathanwade3882 my partner and I went to go see Trolls band together and I had pretty low expectations, but the movie itself is structured well. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s fun and has some heart and creativity behind it. Especially with its message about teamwork and family that it does in an interesting way. I do recommend it.
@jonathanwade3882 lol no. This is such a bizarre point. Movies like bee movie, sharktale, and boss baby get overlooked because they're terrible movies. Of course, they get overshadowed by better movies like shrek, kung fu panda, and httyd. Thats how basic film discourse works. In fact, thats how its always worked. Puss in boots 2 didn't change that.
For me it was a sucker punch with kung fu panda 4 oh my god D: I wasnt expecting PiB2 level of good but I was expecting somewhere between Kung fu Panda 1-3 quality of good. Which is I believe the fair way to judge it. It doesn't even reach the bar.
Unfriendly reminder: After the release of the Wild Robot, DreamWorks will rely more heavily on outsourcing their animated films to different animation studios likely in other countries with less labor protections. No company is above criticism so they should get some pushback for this decision since if Disney, Illumination, or Warner Bros did something on this level, we would all be talking about it. Also growing up Disney doesn’t inherently make you a RUclips grifter. The marvel humor/4th wall breaking that people have issue with nowadays is a descendent of the DreamWorks Shrek type humor. If we wanna talk about the death of sincerity, Shrek is unfortunately not completely innocent. Especially since it’s not common to see other people talk about DreamWorks 2D animated movies (Prince of Egypt + Road to El Dorado.)
I see Shrek as more of a satire than insincere. Shrek making fun of the tropes on fairytale are not only done for its humour but also to be part of rather than making fun of its storytelling. I still agree that Shrek is a bad influence to modern films even during its time that have created Shark Tales and Chicken Little.
2020: "We were always at war with Illumination. Pixar was always our allias." 2022: "We were always at war with Disney and Pixar. DreamWorks and Illumination were always our allias." 2024: "We were always at war with mainstream animations. Indie animations ware always our allias."
I'm fairly certain that the main reason people had so many issues with "Megamind vs The Doom Syndicate" was that DreamWorks never used a film as a pilot episode for their shows, they were always strictly introduced as episodes.
I wouldn't say it killed it. Far from it actually. It just warped the minds of moviegoers into thinking this is the quality every other DreamWorks movie should be going forward, forgetting that DreamWorks has always been mixed in terms of movie quality.
As much as I liked Puss in Boots 2 due to being a big fan of Shrek, I can't deny that this movie spawned a crap ton of elitists and manchildren that expects evey animated film to be in that scale and nothing else. Not only that but it also caused biased DreamWorks fans to trash on Disney fans and then there was the time when they started hyping up Ruby Gillman and trashing Elemental which annoyed me due to me wanting me to see Elemental and everytime someone defends Elemental or bashes Ruby Gillman, a lot of counter arguments that are poorly constructed or just biased. I remember a similar situation with Trolls fans attacking Disney fans due to how Wish came out and it wasnt pretty.
Well in all fairness Trolls merchandise sells. Meanwhile I see tons of unsold Wish merchandise rotting in the clearance section and marked down lower and lower. There is a $40 Star toy from Wish marked down to $8 at my local Walmart and it still won’t sell.
@@princesspikachu3915Really? I don't see any trolls merchandise in my country at all and it's not because it doesn't sell, it's because there is none. I only see Frozen, Paw patrol, Peppa pig and rarely Lion king and Wish but Trolls? Never saw that in any store not even on the catalogue.
I’m not too worried about DreamWorks because I always knew that they were hit or miss. I liked Trolls 3 even though it wasn’t as good as PiB2. Kung Fu Panda 4 is mixed, but I haven’t seen it. DreamWorks has always been like this, so don’t always have your expectations high for a DreamWorks movie.
I'm not worried about Dreamworks whatsoever I always knew they we're hit or miss unlike all the toxic people who only started praising dreamworks when PIB2 came out.
7:04 It's hilarious that out of the recent movies only Puss in Boots 2 managed to get its villains right, while the next ones like the Chameleon, Chelsea and Velvet & Veener ended up being so mid IMHO. That proves Dreamworks is inconsistent even with in its villain side.
Funny thing is that people didn't have very high expectations for The Last Wish(Or as I like to call it,Puss Adventure 2.)when it was announced, people were interested since it had a similar animation style to Spider Verse, but many didn't expect anything special. Maybe if every Dreamworks movie was an absolute masterpiece,I don't think The Last Wish wouldn't have been celebrated as much, and we wouldn't get the Madagascar movies, and that's not a world I want to live in.
Honestly when seeing Puss In Boots the Last Wish had me believing that Dreamworks can still have its “Aura”. When Kung Fu Panda 4 came out I expected to have the same feeling from Puss in Boots but was disappointed of how it turned out. Hopefully they better be careful when bringing back Shrek.
Honesty i think you're right on expectations, When people expect DW movies to be masterpieces..They expect too much, The thing is..Its always been like that..flop movies have existed before, I've learn to embrace the fact that just because they made that one a masterpiece doesn't mean their next installment will reach that height. It's just Dreamworks doing it on different scales for every movie. I think we all should be careful on our expectations, As much as we wanted them to be masterpieces..We should also think about the failure
I agree. Good and bad movies are part of life. Accept that !! I personally liked all the post PIB2 movies. Ruby Gillman and Trolls 3 were decent while KFP4 was really good maybe even great not just from action comedy perspective, storytelling too.
I asked my brother the other day whats his favourite studio was. His response boiled down to not having a favourite and that a good movie is a good movie. If only the DreamWorks fans followed this mentality and weren't constantly meat riding the studio.
@@princesspikachu3915 Still better than most of the dumpster fire movies that Dreamworks made after the mid 2000s. And no, Several of Disney and Pixar’s movies released after 2009 were total masterpieces with only a small amount of bad ones

I'm pretty sure DreamWorks ruined their reputation by making bad choices. Like sure Puss in Boots The Last Wish made people's expectations high for what happens in the future, but the choices DreamWorks made after the movie came out ended up pissing a lot of people off.
But with Dreamworks outsourcing their work to third-party studios after the wild robot to save money, does that mean DreamWorks will no longer be inconsistent
@@joshuasebsebe1047 Well one thing that I know is that throughout the years of DreamWorks existing, between the movies and tv shows we've gotten whether they were good or bad and if we like them or not, DreamWorks has always been inconsistent with the choices they make and the quality of their movies or shows. And at the end of the day, we must remember that DreamWorks is a company that goes through change every time. And sometimes these changes can also help DreamWorks grow and learn as a movie making company.
@@joshuasebsebe1047 Well I'm pretty sure DreamWorks will always be inconsistent because as a company, they go through changes either for the good or the bad. DreamWorks has proven through the years that they don't stay the same sometimes, and they have made some bad choices, but of course they can also learn from those mistakes to be able to grow and improve to become better.
Dreamworks has always had that unpredictable reputation. Early 2010s Dreamworks was highly praised, with the late 2010s being very bleck. It’s usually Masterpiece Masterpiece, meh, meh, then bad and bad. At least as of late anyways.
Even since The Last Wish, ppl seemed to forget that DreamWorks already made anazing movies b4hand.Thats their thing: a mixed bag. Idk why ppl were so shocked by Ruby Gillman, as if DreamWorks wasn't already known for their wonderfully inconsistent output. Also, the 1st Puss in Boots is pretty good too (just from a different time in DreamWorks' catalog)
I really don’t like how DreamWorks fans just get extremely angry whenever you say anything wrong with their movies. I just simply enjoy a good movie and I’m fine with others that disagree with me. But I don’t call them “disgusting” for saying “Sherk 2 is okay but not great” or “Ruby Gillman is bad” like they did with other RUclipsrs.
"Perform a miracle, and the miracle will become the new expectation" !! Finally glad to find a video that addresses this issue. I wholeheartedly agree. I did find the 2023 memes of DreamWorks better than Disney amusing at first but then I became worried they were overdoing it. In 2023 we saw the release of Ruby Gillman and Trolls Band Together. I watched the former only a few months back and I thought it actually fun and decent. Is it peak DreamWorks or game-changing ? No !! But I don't think every movie needs to be that. It had a lot of enjoyable aspects like the humor, Ruby being perhaps the best female DreamWorks protagonist, her inner conflicts and arguments with her family members. I think the 2nd half kind of fumbled that up with Chelsea manipulating Ruby (Who falls for that and moreover the trailers revealed everything) and the climax was not that good. However, I get annoyed when people criticize the animation to be generic. Like only a year of getting the unique animation style, these people forget the old. It feels disrespectful to the animators. Trolls Band Together is also a decent movie although I do disagree with people thinking its the best Trolls movie. They both are 7/10 movies for me. Kung Fu Panda 4 is a severely underrated movie. I don't think its bad or mediocre. I even disagree with people saying its just a fun entertainment movie. I think its a great addition to the franchise. It does not repeat the formula of "Po and Five team up to fight another villain" and instead test new grounds. Po has a really good character arc and that was the key highlight for me. It did not feel like a rehash of KFP3 to me. Zhen adds a fresh new dynamic to Po. There are engaging themes even if they might not have the same emotional depth of the predecessors. The movie does not feel like a lazy cash grab. It instead feels like a great start to a new trilogy with Po as as a master. Chameleon is a criminally underrated villain. I get it its she is not the best DreamWorks villain ever but there are a lot of layers to her character than meet the eye. I think people are just too unwilling to analyze her properly and always keep comparing her to past villains. She is a polar opposite of Po and thematic foil in several ways - backstory, themes and personality. I think these storytelling aspects along with Viola Davis and her shapeshifting powers make her a very good villain in my opinion. People are treating her as if she is the worst DreamWorks villain ever. I mean come on ? DreamWorks have given us some of the best animation villains but if you look at their entire filmography they have like 20+ bad or mediocre or good villains that are weaker than her. I also agree with your point that people had way too much expectations when animated fourthqueels are rarely good and in fact the best one was Shrek Forever After by DreamWorks. Even the director of KFP4 is the one who made Shrek 4 and I noticed a lot of similarities in the creative direction. There are some behind the scenes complaints about the director but I am not getting into that. I agree that it has a lot of flaws - Its rushed, its predictable, the past villains are under-utilized and the emotional heft of the predecessors is lacking. But it would be unwarranted to say the movie has no storytelling substance at all. I will give it like an 8.5/10. Megamind vs Doom Syndicate was just a pure cash grab product made by the television subsidiary studios of DreamWorks. I am glad you addressed that. It was just meant to be a pilot for Megamind Rules. I get it was highly disappointing to wait for the sequel to a great movie for 14 years and then getting this instead. Its totally understandable but please stop worrying about every future movie turning out to be like this. Like in literally every discussion about Shrek 5 or Wild Robot or Bad Guys 2 people comment "I hope this does not turn out like KFP4 and Megamind 2". "This might turn to be disappointing like KFP4 and Megamind 2". The TV show branch does make some great stuff. Recently only they released Jurassic World: Chaos Theory but they do also make cheap stuff like this. I can't also appreciate Puss in Boots 2 or enjoy it that much now because of it outshining other underrated movies of the studio. The Wild Robot has received critical acclaim but I think I will enjoy it slightly less because of the obnoxiousness of the DreamWorks fandom. They are so fickle-minded. They have now changed sides to Pixar and praising it for Inside Out 2.
I personally see type 1 and type 2 movies equally. Theyre actually just movies. I think it still separates them as the good or the bad which i think is kinda bad for our perspective as an audience, we like what we like and we can't just organize our expectations. For example, i enjoyed strange world, personally i wanted to see disney come back with a sci fi related concept, and had a unique style in their animation, was the story generic, in some level, but i think maybe thats the point, is that true? I dont know i haven't met the writers. This didnt make me hate disney, 2022 was iffy for films but i didnt want to take advantage of the films they had, if i was the opposite i wouldve just watched spiderverse 100 times indoors refusing any contact with what the world has to offer. We cant expect the studios to make GREAT things everytime, thats unhealthy for our minds, if that were the reality we would want to expect better things for ourselves in general. We dont need bad movies, we need movies, just movies. Just art ij general. As an animator i appreacite the many artists behind films today like Kung fu panda 4, Inside Out 2, even the netflix sandy cheeks movie. Fo be fair, writers can make questionable choices but they learn. Lets not focus on the best all the time cause that just ruins our expectations like we do for dreamworks
Each studio will not hit the ball for a home run all the time. It's good when we get a good animated film, but never expect all films after that being on par to that one. PS. The Godfather needs a full English version. The subtitles at the beginning makes it hard to watch. I've not been able to get passed the first 30 minutes with out quitting. I know the film is a classic, but needs an update for people who are not into reading when watching a film.
Both Lightyear and Strange World were treated unfairly marketing wise due to the LGBT representation they had. I love and enjoyed those movies and its sucks they had to be pushed around for a reason like that
Since I was barely a preteen when I learned DreamWorks were a thing, I didn't exactly grew up with their films, and I don't watch their movies in theaters as I'm very selective. The only exceptions I made were the _HTTYD_ franchise, _Turbo_ and _Puss in Boots: The Last Wish_ I ain't paying to watch _Kung Fu Panda_ or _Shrek_ The only reason in existence I went to see _The Last Wish_ was to see what was up with that cool and out of place looking wolf character from the trailer. I ain't holding my breathe for _Shrek 5_ to do anything similar. Why would people watch Shrek just because of Puss in Boots? It's not his movie and it's not about anything related to him. I certainly don't remember Puss doing anything in the _Shrek_ films other than being Shrek and Donkey's buddy.
Lots of great points made here, I think this might be the only video I have seen arguing that that shitty megamind movie isn't the same as their theatrical releases, cuz in reality it's just like every shitty TV series they made, just in movie length. Also yeah, it shouldn't bother me as much as it does, but working at a theater that mostly gets movies for kids, most parent that take their kids to the movies are the kind of parents that see all animated movies and being only for kids. Examples being when they get tickets for Kung Fu Panda 4, and they say it's the first one they seen. Or when they go and watch one of the shitty Viva Kids movies we get and if I do like to ask the parents for their honest review from their perspective, they will say it's good cuz their kids liked it. I wouldn't say kids don't watch animation. Younger kids still watch animation, but 10+ kids usually don't. There really aren't any animated movies aimed at this demographic anymore. Most animated movies now are aimed at younger kids and maybe their adult fans.
The Owl House and Amphibia where aimed at preteens, but I agree that most animated movies and shows are aimed towards young kids or adults. Teens/preteens get left out.

@@jonathanwade3882Also Over the Hedge is a really great film that's extremely underrated
The day that people understand that animation studios are inconsistent the world will be healed
@@syafiqchua1670 yeah, I mean, I do enjoy Shrek, but I cannot deny that Shrek’s specific type of humor did have a massive cultural impact.

I'm fairly certain that the main reason people had so many issues with "Megamind vs The Doom Syndicate" was that DreamWorks never used a film as a pilot episode for their shows, they were always strictly introduced as episodes.
In conclusion I will now consider The Last Wish “The Masterpiece that killed DreamWorks”
I wouldn't say it killed it. Far from it actually. It just warped the minds of moviegoers into thinking this is the quality every other DreamWorks movie should be going forward, forgetting that DreamWorks has always been mixed in terms of movie quality.
@@autism-chan2517exactly
Oh my gosh just PREACH!!!!
They advertised Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate as "Megamind 2," and people totally fell for it.

A better title would be "The Movie That Made Everyone Forget That Dreamworks Also Made Shark Tale".
I know how you feel. I grew opinion. Dreamwork is underrated.
More like overrated. I’m so glad I was raised right watching Disney and Pixar movies growing up

7:57 It’s because of Disney’s lack of advertising for Strange World and because everyone just expected them to come to Disney + anyway
Oh boy. If only you knew….
There was backlash to the early marketing for Strange World. It’s the same reason why a lot of people stayed away from Pixar’s Lightyear. It’s the same reason why some people won’t let their kids watch Disney and Pixar anymore.
There was backlash in Florida when a teacher showed Strange World to her 4th grade students.

DreamWorks realizing they have to make consistently quality films to appease their audiences: 😱
Yea even RUclips nowadays is treating videos on animation clips as genre kids “made for kids” coppa stuff like this has to stop

My daughter loves Bluey. If I never had her, I would probably still adore the cartoon dog family. We have all 3 seasons on DVD because it’s cheaper than streaming.
DON’T YOU DARE FORCE PEOPLE TO HATE RUBY GILLMAN TEENAGE MASTERPIECE!
It's not really a masterpiece, but I enjoyed it. The movie was fun, and that's what it all needed to be.
Ruby Gillman is a better version of Turning Red.
@@princesspikachu3915 I like both Ruby Gillman and Turning Red. Both movies deserve more love and appreciate rather than cynical hates from losers.
Ruby Gillman isn't a masterpiece, but it's still a great and underrated movie that needs more and more love. But I agree with you.
@@nas0518 I like both too. I just like Ruby Gillman more.
I love and enjoyed those movies and its sucks they had to be pushed around for a reason like that
You can’t force people to accept it.
