Their entire debut album is amazing. I remember growing up I thought it was a greatest hits compilation, every single song was a hit and received significant radio air time.
Oh man.. What A Rabbit Holke you've entered... Let's Go, Magic, Drive, You Might Think, Tonight She Comes, Hello Again, It's All I Can Do, Think it Over, It's Not the Night, Bye bye Love and so many more!! The Cars were simply, The Cars! Great Band, Loved Their Music! R.I.P. "Rik and Benjamin"
Anyone who has seen the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" will never forget the pool scene with Phoebe Cates while "Moving In Stereo" was playing in the background!
The Cars were the perfect bridge from the 70s sounds (Tom Petty / SuperTramp) to New Wave sounds in the 80s. Having two singers & the synth also set them apart.
@, sure, but it didn’t really get popular until after 1980. The Cars, however, exploded prior to that. I’m not crediting them with inventing new wave or anything, just saying they introduced a lot of people to the idea of it.
Elliot Easton is such an underrated guitarist. The Cars' music was a different animal in those days, yet he came up with some of the most unbelievably inventive solos I had ever heard. Great band. Great albums. Great reaction. 🤘😎❤
As you can tell by my username, I'm a huge fan of The Who. I've seen The Who too many times to count. But I was never there on a night when Pete Townshend smashed a guitar. Ironically, many years ago I went to see The Cars at the old Boston Garden and Elliot Easton smashed a guitar! I couldn't believe it. Elliot definitely played some great solos.
My wife and I married in November 1979. Took our first road trip in June 1980. Followed her parents and siblings as they pulled a travel trailer to Disney World. The National Speed Limit was 55 mph. The only way we survived that long ass ride was to let The Cars Candy O loop over and over on the cassette player in our '77 Camaro LT. I love everything about The Cars. R.I.P. Benjamin Orr, Ric Ocasek and my beautiful Rhonda Lynn.
I love the reaction! When this 1st showed up in my feed, I told my wife, "Oh shit! I bet he's gonna love how the snare and bass drums flip sides halfway in. I hope he catches that, because for some whacked out reason no one besides me ever addresses it." Lol.
I remember late 70's, was 17-18 yrs old, cruising, having fun, and the Cars were blasting on my car radio. There songs never get old to me. They are one of the best.
The real unique voice comes from their other lead singer, Ric Ocasek. The Cars are definitely part of the soundtrack of my youth….a lot of great memories!
The Cars debuted in 1976 (I believe) when I was in high school, and their first album was one of the most successful debut albums. Led by Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr (both lead singers), they were previously in a band together called Milkwood. Milkwood’s sound was modeled after CSNY, but after not achieving much success, they went on to form the Cars and became instrumental leaders of what would become known as the New Wave sound of the 1980s.
The Cars gave me great tunes all through high school and beyond. I think you would really enjoy the vibe of Moving In Stereo and and the softness of Drive. Also, thanks for making me sing along on the subway this evening. If you know Phoebe Cates and Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Moving in Stereo will bring a memory.
The intro was EVERYTHING back in the days when you didn't know what song the DJ(on the radio) would play next.. This is a great song for that, because you knew right away what you were in for with the first lead notes/beats:)
Along with Bostons Boston Lp from 76 And Kansas in 76 .And Peter Frampton comes Alive in 76 .1976 WAS SUPER HUGE for the Music Industry. Long live the FANTASTIC 70s Baby
This is off their self titled debut album "The Cars", that was packed with hits. It literally was the vanguard, kick off of "New Wave" in the late 70's. The album's within my personal top 30 in no particular order.
The Cars with rock pop pop pioneers as they invented new wave music. They were way of ahead of the curve of this massive genre that didn't become popular until the 1980s. They were combo rock pop new wave punk rockabilly power pop art rock garage rock progressive band that revolutionized music in the 1970s and 80s.
The Cars were one of those bands that didn't sound like anyone else. You should check out Shake It Up, Let's Go, Magic, Hello Again, or You Might Think. I've done covers of Hello Again and Magic on my RUclips channel, and I'm either going to be doing Let's Go or You Might Think next. There will never be another band like The Cars! Their unique sound and musical style made them one of the most liked bands of the late 70's and throughout the 80's. Sadly, we recently lost the two men that were the driving force of the band with the loss of Ric Ocasik and Ben Orr.
The Cars were the first band I ever saw in concert back in 1978. It was outdoors at Cal-Expo in Sacramento, and they start the show with a bunch of car horns. The were the opening act for Thin Lizzy, Journey & The Marshall Tucker Band. As a guitar player I learned the lead to this song and played it many times!
The Cars are awesome, my first concert when I was 10 years old. Go back to their debut album, which is pioneering and trendsetting. Every member had a background in different genres of music, so they’re a unique mix, something for everyone. Start at the start: LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL. Deep catalog.
In this song the lead signer is Benjamin Orr. Him and Rick Ocasek ( The guitarist with the dark glasses on) do most of the lead signing on all the songs. A lot of great music from them including. Lets go, my best friends girlfriend, shake it up and more.
One of my favorite bands I grew up with. Their first album, “The Cars” is one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion. Check out “moving in stereo”, cool song. They’re all good though…..
I used to rehearsal next door to them before they got signed.. The backup vocals you mentioned are because Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker did this album. David the drummer played with Jonathan Richmond and Boston punk legends DMZ.. And Ben is just a rockstar,'s rockstar.. All good folks.. Listen to the whole record.. it's got a nice flow from song to song.
I was fortunate enough to see The Cars live-an awesome concert. They have so many hits, some my personal faves are Moving In Stereo, Misfit Kid, My Best Friend's Girl, Let The Good Times Roll, You Might Think, It's All I Can Do, Lets Go...I think you would love them all but I highly recommend you react to Moving In Stereo!! RIP, Ric Ocasek, Ben Orr.
The Cars had a wonderfully unique sound, which fit right in, in the 80s. The 80s were all about the synth. Dig in deep with these guys. Their sound never gets old.
Steven- You did an especially wonderful job on this reaction, pointing out subtle features of the drums, bass, harmonies, etc that make the song pop. There are many great Cars songs, and each one of them is different. This song was their first hit in 1978: three songs from a mid-80s album that are worth a listen are You Might Think. Magic, and Drive (this last one is a real departure for them and was their highest-charting hit).
Dude, the cars are super good. You can't go wrong listening to them. Benjamin Orr singing here had a really great voice. I say had, because he's passed now. RIP.
This reaction really made my day! Thank you so much ❤. I remember months ago I requested the reaction to this song, the live version from The Midnight Special, your friend reacted to it. I was searching for the video, but I can't find it anymore. The Cars were unique in the sound, I love them so much. I hope you react to them again in the future
Dude, when the cars came out in 1976 and we were rocking to Rush, Led Zeppelin, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Foghat, Frank Zappa, the list goes on and here comes the cars over the radio come out we didn't know what to think, but we were stoked. Benjamin Orr did a lot of the vocals he was the bass player but also Ric Ocasek did vocals also. Unfortunately Benjamin Orr died on October 3rd in 2000, he had been battling cancer. Anyways even though the cars were different sounding than the rest of what we were listening to we accepted it because the music was definitely amazing. The musician ship they had together and just the writing all of the music itself was obviously exceptional.
The first album came out in '78, just FYI. I agree, it was a new sound but a great one. They were new wave, but for us rockers had a more accessible sound than, say, Devo or the B-52s. They also have some multi-generational appeal. My parents liked at least some of the Cars, me and my friends liked the Cars, and my little brother, 16 years younger than me, likes them too (I'm pretty sure his daughter does too).
It was good to be a kid growing up on the north shore of Boston in the 70's. In 1976, Boston released their legendary debut album and then two years later The Cars released their debut which is also legendary. In 1978, the sound from The Cars debut hadn't really been heard before....it was entirely new. Also, The Cars had 2 great lead vocalists, Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr (both are now deceased). For many years when I was younger, I thought Ric Ocasek was the only lead vocalist. I was amazed to find out Ben Orr was the lead vocalist on probably 50% of their songs.....including "Just What I Needed". I hope you'll react to their song "It's All I Can Do" (Ben Orr on the vocals). It's one of my favorites by The Cars. RIP Ric and Ben. BTW, have you reacted to the J Geils Band? They're another great one from Boston.
They did some amazing stuff from their second album on, but their first album was simply amazing. Not a single skippable song. A great album in an age of great albums. And ahead of their time with the synth use.
Rick Beato analyzed this song a few years ago on his What Makes This Song Great and he pointed out that drumming change up. Check out the triple play from the Candy-O album - Double Life/Shoo Be Doo/Candy-O
Back in the late 70's when I was in high school I so wanted to be Ben Orr (bassist and vocalist in this song). Their second album is another complete banger. Oh and yes, the drummer is AMAZING!
I love the Cars ... The strangest thing about reaction videos, is I never watched the videos. I was always a cruiser. I miss the old radio stations with personalities.
One of my favorite bands. I have lived and grew up in the Boston area all my life so I love all the Boston Bands. Boston, the Cars J. Geils, Aerosmith, the list goes on. Good stuff thanks for the great reactions. Grew up on all of them.
Yes, The Cars first LP, all songs are bangers. And from one drummer to you, Sunshine of Your Love, Ginger Baker plays snare on the 1 and 3 too. Thanks for your channel
Thanks for your response to my comment, the Royal Albert concert was awesome and the original "Sunshine" playing on the radio was a new sound from the British groups. In 1968, my first live concert, Cream at The Oakland Arena. Thanks again for your channel and great memories
All the happy people, dancing and singing along....I remember. Not a bunch of a silly sparkles and crap. Just a group of big kids having fun making music.
All right my brother Stephen.... When it comes to the band The Cars, this is definitely one band that I really wish I could have seen... they have such awesome material. Please drive this band until the wheels fall off ‼️💯🔥🎸🥁🎹🎸🎤🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Sign of a great group ! :)
Just Like Boston & "Back in Black" with Brian Johnson!
Absolutely I love all of their albums.
The Cars are one of my favorite bands of all time. They had a real quirky sound, with lots of banging tracks. R.I.P. Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek.
You kept saying “Let’s Go!” That is the name of another of their big hits… 😊
Was just gonba comment this.
@ great minds think alike! 😀
Nice catch on that one. 👍🤙😎
Their entire debut album is amazing. I remember growing up I thought it was a greatest hits compilation, every single song was a hit and received significant radio air time.
The Cars were one of the bands that dominated the 80's music scene. There are tons of songs to check out.
Ya buuuuut this was the Fantastic 70s lol
No they aren't. They took a break in the mid-1980s and their popularity was never the same afterwards.
Steve , The Cars helped usher in the sound of New Wave in 1978. This song is from their debut album. You should react to every song on it.
One of the best first albums ever created. Do a deep dive and learn and appreciate. Rock hall of fame.

These guys and a few more groups gave me hope that "rock" would continue into the 80's ....I was thankful
Elliot Easton is such an underrated guitarist. The Cars' music was a different animal in those days, yet he came up with some of the most unbelievably inventive solos I had ever heard. Great band. Great albums. Great reaction. 🤘😎❤

Moving in Stereo on Fast Times At Ridgemont High is one of the most epic scenes ever. Lol
The real unique voice comes from their other lead singer, Ric Ocasek.

All of the band members were hardcore veterans. All of them were playing in bands in the 1960’s.
Huge fan back in the late 70’s and 80’s. Tons of hits…
I think Elliot Easton may be the most under rated guitarist ever. Always catchy and appropriate to the song. Lots of Rockabilly licks.
I've always loved the Cars and this song. Their first album was like a greatest hits record. Such a great band.
Finally someone is reacting to my favorite band in high school!!!!

A good friend of mine, who is a drummer, said the The Cars songs are very hard to play. He said the same thing about The Police.
I can definitely see that! 🤘🏻
That album The Cars is packed with bangers! Bye Bye Love, Moving in Stereo, It's All Mixed Up.....
They were completely fresh and new when they hit in late 70’s. Changed the soundscape.
American "New Wave" pioneers.
The Cars debut album is on a par with Boston's debut album in the sense that EVERY tune is a banger! Both bands are from my hometown too! 😁
Their first album sounds like a greatest hits album. All killer, no filler. One of the greatest debut albums of all time.
Got that right. and Bostons Boston Lp from 76 And Van Halen FROM 78 LONG LIVE THE 70s

I suggest Bye Bye Love, Let's Go, Moving in Stereo, Shake it Up
Bye Bye Love!!! That is there best song!!

their song Moving in Stereo was the new wave 1978 vibe

The first album came out in '78, just FYI.
I agree, it was a new sound but a great one. They were new wave, but for us rockers had a more accessible sound than, say, Devo or the B-52s.
They also have some multi-generational appeal. My parents liked at least some of the Cars, me and my friends liked the Cars, and my little brother, 16 years younger than me, likes them too (I'm pretty sure his daughter does too).

Keyboard and synthesizer played by Greg Hawkes. The vocal on this track is Benjamin Orr also on bass.
