Btw noble, the most likely reason for the extinction of the saber tooth cat is because there wasn't any prey that it could actually hunt, stuff either got smaller or went extinct and basically the cats starved until they all died out
Yeah the poor cats were better as ambush predators going after larger, slower prey. Special adaptations is definitely a double edged sword for many hunters
When it comes to the Sabertooth it wasn't really the fangs. The sabertooth was a heavily muscled cat designed for strength rather then speed all for taking down big game like giant ground sloths and toxodon. But when those animals died out replaced by smaller quicker prey like deer and elk the sabertooth couldn't keep up.
I choose to believe they died out because their fangs go stuck trying to fit through a hole 1/4 of their size.

@@nujevad28 If i remember it correctly, i read once a Book about Cats (the common pets), written by Terry Pratchett. And there was one Cartoon / Sketch in it with one Cat explaining to it´s child, that Cats once where big as Tigers, but shrunk in size so they could fit through their Cat-Doors.

So if I remember correctly sabertooth tigers had the facial muscles to open their mouths exceptionally wide in order to use their teeth affectively. Biting around the jugular and suffocating large prey. They died out cause they were too specialized and their big prey died out leaving them with faster smaller prey they couldn't catch.
