Now that Jack mentioned “survival” when talking to his dad, I can finally talk about this: Jack Sparrow’s journey is all about cheating death and becoming, at best, immortal. The aztec gold curse was a bust because of the side effects and the davy jones thing was also a semi bust because he’d have a duty and wont be free, and also he decided to save Will’s life than becoming immortal, so Jack’s search continues.
The Davy Jones thing wasn't a bust he just wanted to be sailing for the rest of time no matter what he was doing. He was fully prepared to stab the heart. Jones forced him to choose between saving Will or having his dream.

If I had a quarter for every movie that had a wedding during a massive battle on a pirate ship that is being attacked by fish people while in the middle of a massive rain storm in the middle of a giant whirlpool...I'd have one quarter, which isn't alot but it's crazy that it even happened once.💜
This movie once held the record for the largest film set ever made. They built a warehouse in the Nevada desert outside of Las Vegas with mock-ups of both the _Pearl_ and _Dutchman_ on a giant turntable for the Maelstrom scene. They also pumped in thousands of gallons of water kept at near-freezing to avoid germs.
Johnny depp visited hospitalized children as Jack, that must have been awesome. This movie and the first one were my favorite. The first one is special to me because i randomly watched it on TV and knew absolutely nothing about the story. Thanks for your reactions guys
The song at the beginning, _Hoist the Colors,_ was written for the movie to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis. *The Chorus:* _Yo ho, haul together_ _Hoist the colors high_ _Heave ho, thieves and beggars_ _Never shall we die_ The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning. *First verse:* _The King and his men_ _stole the Queen from her bed_ _and bound her in her bones_ The King was the Pirate King at that time, and while his identity is unknown, I believe him to be Jones himself (my little theory). The King's men refers to the Brethren Court. The Queen is Calypso, her bed is the sea, and binding her in her bones refers to binding her to her human form. _the seas be ours and by the powers_ _where we will we'll roam_ The seas literally belong to the pirates due to having power over Calypso. *Second verse:* _Now some have died_ _and some are alive_ _and others sail on sea_ This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning. _with the keys to the cage_ _and the Devil to pay_ The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean-bound Hades. _we lay to Fiddler's Green._ Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker. It might have a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative. *Third verse:* _The bell has been raised_ _From it's watery grave..._ _Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?_ _A call to all_ _Pay head the squall_ _And turn your sails to home!_ This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.
32:45 it's her nature to be unpredictable like the weather, because she is the goddess of weather at sea. All mariners pray for the weather to favor them, but it was particularly important during the days of wind & sail.
Something about Orlando Bloom, from 1:02:22, you said early 2000's was a golden era for him. It's not just his golden era, but his beginning. Lord of the Rings was his first major role, and he was in his early twenties, when he was cast as Legolas.
I just love how well done Elisabeth's (badass) arc is. She began being the fine Governor's daughter and ended up being Pirate King! They did it so naturally and it suited her so well imo. So glad you're enjoying these they'll always be THE Pirate Movies to me❣
I 100% agree, I just hate her ending, considering she always seemed to be the one to not like the traditional life and was intrigued by the pirate life. I would have liked for her to stay a pirate captain, but instead she is the only one whose ending is a departure from being a pirate and, basically, being a stay-at-home mom.
@@4Tom4lepus4 yeah totally. After all that it would have been cool for her to be a pirate captain. At least in this one she still dresses pirate-y in the end but you know later she’s in a fancy dress again like whyyy 🥲
@@thepfealexander There is this pattern in literature - not anymore nowadays, but it used to be very popular - where the female protagonist's arc is about defying the expectations put on her, being the hero but then afterwards accepting her role and returning to the traditional expectations. Another example for this would be LotR. And I always hated this sort of ending.
@@4Tom4lepus4 ah yes let her explore only to come back to what is wanted for her in the first place..not my thing either, if it’s clear it’s something they want or intend of achieving in the end, totally fine but here it would have been nice to see something more happening for Elizabeth. I just think to myself she’s on some pirate island and sailing out regularly 😆
This was my favorite one, I love Jack's goofy side but I also love his strategic and intelligent side. The story thru all 3 has been amazing. Jack's father is the keeper of the Code I believe. Fun fact: when Depp designed Jack Sparrow he took part of his inspiration from Keith Richards, so when they decided to have Jack's Dad in this one, they got Keith Richards to play him. Full circle sort of feel. There are books that give some filler content on the adventures of Jack Sparrow, plus a ton of bloopers/ deleted scenes from the movies. Like a famous one: The reason Jack was branded a pirate. He was originally working for the East India Trading Company, just a small job for a young man to get out on the sea. Until he found out the cargo was slaves. He freed them, but it cost him the ship and his good name. The ship became the Black Pearl and he took the name Jack Sparrow. A deleted scene between him and Cutler Beckett was when Becket told him off for stealing his cargo and Jack says "People aren't cargo mate". It is also why Davy Jones says Jack's soul is worth 100 souls. The 100 he saved, and why all those people mourned his death in the swamp. So many good details that those who hunt for them know and make the story better.
1:50 There was a red flag before the parrot said,, "don't eat me". The sailor that told Will he saw black sails also mentioned around there he had delicious "long pork", that is the infamous term for what cannibalistic islanders called human meat.
One of the most expensive movies ever made and it shows. The amount of special effects, costumes and different locations ; not to mention the awesome looking ships. Truly a spectacle and one of the greatest films of all time.
What calypso said when she was a giant was, "Malfaiteur en Tombeau, Crochir l'Esplanade, Dans l'Fond d'l'eau!". This roughly means "Across all the waters, find the path to he who wrongfully entombed me" in French.
4:05 That was probably the saddest thing in his death for me. He died clutching an apple in his hand. After all those years deprived of his creature comforts, all he wanted was to taste an apple. Glad he got his apple.
I love Spartan's humble response to Pudgey stating there's no L in maestrom: "Well, I'll check the definitions later and we'll find out." And then the definition pops up lol. Nice editing. Fun as always.
One of my favourite movies ever tbh, it just just so great overall, Will and Elizabeths wedding in the middle of the fight with the amazing ost was just such a good scene
the opening of this film was so infamous at the time...the tone of it...the music; it was a sign of change in the carribbean...the people were making a stand...saying they would never die...even in death. that song marked the begining of something truly dark for the empire. the place jack Sparrow was in was some kind of weird Limbo and interesting bit of trivia...the crab he saw there was Cancer (as in the Zodiac sign). Davy Jones loved the ocean and Calypso embodied the ocean...so to say he loved a single woman is incorrect...he loved what she represented...not who she was. there was a scene between Jack Sparrow and Lord Beckett they had to take out of the film because it was deemed too offensive: Lord Beckett says to Jack "you took some property from me i want back." and Jack replies "people aren't property mate." (slave trade reference).
This is my favourite pirates film. Most like the first which is understandable. But this film was so bold and so ambitious. The direction is perfect. The comedy is well framed and timed. The history is interesting - they include some actual pirates in here great that they had Keith Richards be Jack’s dad. And good villains make a good story… with Davy Jones and Barbossa we had it good, but Beckett and the EI Trading company were the real world villains… and the performance is fantastic in so many on the nose and nuanced ways. We were SO spoiled as kids… we had HP, LOTR and this… it was incredible!
Yes please do the last two films! They might not be the best, but they are worth the good laughs. The tragic love story between Calypso and Davy Jones has always been my favorite lore in POTC. When Calypso says “It’s my nature.”, She is saying that she was wild and unpredictable as the sea. It’s possible on the one day after 10 years, she could’ve been with Davy Jones in her sea form instead of the human form that he wanted. “Malfaiteur en Tombeau, Crochir l’Esplanade, Dans l’Fond d’l’eau!”, the phrase Calypso yells out when she is freed from her bonds, roughly translates to “Across all the seas, find the path to he who wrongfully entombed me!". Also in the original Greek myth, Calypso is a sea nymph who is the daughter of the Titan Atlas. When the Titans lost the war against the Greek gods, she was punished for siding with her dad. Because she supported him in the war so the gods punished/cursed her that she would have to stay in Ogygia forever. Also Calypso’s real symbol was a dolphin not a crab. They did that because the crab is an octopus’ prey. 🏴☠️⚔️💣🐬🦀🌊🐙
Jacks Dad was played by Keith Richard’s from The Rolling Stones and the cool thing is, Depp said he’s based the mannerisms on Richard’s all the way back to film one…nice little cameo 🙏🏼
40:29 YESSS! Thank you for noticing this bit of the music! This track is called "What Shall We Die For", which if you listen closely during the second half of the finale when the key changes there's a choir in the background that's singing the lines "yo-ho all together, hoist the colour high..." The music of the entire first trilogy is spectacular, no exceptions.
You're right, the film IS fantastic. Back when it was released, people were rather meh on it. Everyone said 'it's too convoluted'. But the backstabbin' middle part does make perfect sense if you check all character motivations and goals. It's just really dense storytelling. Maybe too dense? I don't care. I love how every character gets their moments to shine, and do something relevant to the story. So many great arcs, be they big (Elizabeth, Will, Bootstrap Bill), medium-sized (Norrington, Barbossa, Davy Jones) or small (comedy relief side characters).
It tears at my heart just thinking about being away for TEN YEARS and then only having just ONEsingle day to be with the one you love. I wouldn't be able to do it either☹
My favorite detail of the trilogy is the ghost story of Dead Man's Chest; when Elizabeth hides on the merchant vessel and the crew finds her wedding dress, one of them sailors spins the tale that the dress belongs to a bride who became widowed before her wedding night; and then in At World's End, this tale becomes true; Elizabeth and Will are finally wed but he dies... and they consume their marriage afterwards
Also I find it interesting when people are surprised about Calypso's identity; in Dead Man's Chest, shortly before Tia Dalma speaks of Calypso, Jack has made his payment and just like in The Curse Of The Black Pearl he proceeds to steal from her; and there we see the crab pendant that turns out to be a music box; later we see that Davy Jones has seemingly the same music box; now we might have assumed that Tia Dalma had merely collected it like the other magical trinkets she posseses and sells, but the easier assumption was that she is Calypso in human form
The scene with becket walking in slow-mo as the cannonballs destroy the ship around him is one of my all time favorite cinematic scenes. I feel like it was a cinematic death too good for his character. Now if one of our heroes had gone out like that it would be my fave of all time
This trilogy was truly a perfect trilogy. Still one of the best ever made. Fun fact, Jack's dad was played by Keith Richards, the guitarist for the Rolling Stones, whose real life persona was a huge inspiration for Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow.
2:50 Very close, but the 'Fate Intervening' was actually about Will 😉 Calypso says the same thing when she meets Will, 'Their is an air of destiny around you', and again when they see the souls pass.... 'A touch of fate..' I'm not sure if she could completely see the future but she is certainly omnipresent and has some sort of future sight ability and was able to see the strands of fate that lead Will to a new greater purpose. That's why she was so 'affectionate' when she met him, he was her new DaveyqJones
There was some forshadowing of Tia Dalma being Calypso in Dead Man's Chest. When the crew is at her hut there is a necklace on the table when Jack is stealing a ring. The picture on the necklace is the same image on the music box on Davy Jones's pipe organ. Furthermore, when Tia tells the tale of how Davy Jones fell in love with a woman, Gibbs says that he heard a different version of the tale in which Jones fell in love with the sea. She then says that they are two versions of the same story and both are true. Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones plays Jack's father. He was Johnny Depp's main inspiration for his character. He was actually set to appear in the previous film but had to pull out due to his commitment with the band's tour. Fun fact: The sword Davy Jones stabs Will with is the sword Will made for James Norrington in Curse of the Black Pearl. Speaking of, James is such an underrated character. He was complex but a good man and he genuinely loved Elizabeth.
36:16 Fun fact about the music: It matches the Man with the Harmonica theme from the western Oce upon a Time in the West, one of the most iconic Western soundtracks of all time.
So Will essentially became the ferryman forever right which means one day, he’ll have to help Elizabeth, his son, etc his entire line pass to the afterlife, well, unless he has them join the crew after they die I guess
6:00 - basically, when Lord Beckett got the Heart of Davy Jones, he himself had a change of heart and figured: "screw it, no fair trail, no help of any kind, if their a pirate OR helping a pirate, regardless of who they are, then they hang by the neck until dead." so he basically went on a "pirate purge" if you like
I think my personal favorite was the second film. Something about the mystery about Davy Jones/The Deadman's Chest, and then the Lovecraftian horror of the Kraken really hit for me. It feeds into my thalassophobia, and why I'll never go into the open ocean. 😆The special effects for the Kraken scenes were all so good too.
I think Jones is so furious at Calypso being set free because, much like him being trapped to sail the sea forever, she was imprisoned in a human form with limited magic. Not to mention the love/hate relationship.
To my understanding, I think he felt betrayed, because she told him to unalive the Brethren Court for capturing her. However, she must have changed her mind when Will told her that it was Davy Jones who showed the first Brethren Court how to bind her. She basically created the Malstrom and watched them destroying each other
I like some of the little details they throw into these movies, old Disney was amazing. An example is Jones actually feeling a little pain and emotions as soon as the heart is nearby.

For sure! They should definitely give it a try because that's a fantastic show! I'd say it's more mature and much more realistic than PotC. With that being said, PotC 3 is my favorite movie of all time, so I may be a bit biased towards pirate stories in general😊

Calypso’s nature isn’t deceit, it’s elusiveness. She’s the sea goddess - she can’t be consistent or predictable because the sea is not.
Being inconsistent is the defining characteristic of women in general

I was led on my sofa feeling really down with nothing to do and this popped up. Thanks for cheering me up guys :)
It seems that Elizabeth remembered what Jack said about a captain of a ship being able to perform a mare-ee-auje. 💜
The song at the beginning, _Hoist the Colors,_ was written for the movie to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis.
*The Chorus:*
_Yo ho, haul together_
_Hoist the colors high_
_Heave ho, thieves and beggars_
_Never shall we die_
The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning.
*First verse:*
_The King and his men_
_stole the Queen from her bed_
_and bound her in her bones_
The King was the Pirate King at that time, and while his identity is unknown, I believe him to be Jones himself (my little theory). The King's men refers to the Brethren Court. The Queen is Calypso, her bed is the sea, and binding her in her bones refers to binding her to her human form.
_the seas be ours and by the powers_
_where we will we'll roam_
The seas literally belong to the pirates due to having power over Calypso.
*Second verse:*
_Now some have died_
_and some are alive_
_and others sail on sea_
This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning.
_with the keys to the cage_
_and the Devil to pay_
The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean-bound Hades.
_we lay to Fiddler's Green._
Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker. It might have a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative.
*Third verse:*
_The bell has been raised_
_From it's watery grave..._
_Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?_
_A call to all_
_Pay head the squall_
_And turn your sails to home!_
This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.
"You may kill me, but you will never insult me! Who am I?"
.......
*offended look "I'm Captain Jack Sparrow..."
32:45 it's her nature to be unpredictable like the weather, because she is the goddess of weather at sea. All mariners pray for the weather to favor them, but it was particularly important during the days of wind & sail.
One of the most badass weddings in movie history, by the way. 💜
Yeah no fake badass woman arc like they do today it felt natural she earned it by going through a lot of shit
I never cried for a movie couple this much! I usually don’t care for movie romances but Will and Elizabeth are so lovely😢❤
Why's the rum gone!!!?
4:05 That was probably the saddest thing in his death for me. He died clutching an apple in his hand. After all those years deprived of his creature comforts, all he wanted was to taste an apple. Glad he got his apple.
I love Spartan's humble response to Pudgey stating there's no L in maestrom: "Well, I'll check the definitions later and we'll find out."
And then the definition pops up lol.
Davy Jones loved the ocean and Calypso embodied the ocean...so to say he loved a single woman is incorrect...he loved what she represented...not who she was.
there was a scene between Jack Sparrow and Lord Beckett they had to take out of the film because it was deemed too offensive: Lord Beckett says to Jack "you took some property from me i want back."
and Jack replies "people aren't property mate." (slave trade reference).
This one was actually my favorite of the trilogy, with the first one as a close second ♥️
You two are going to need your own pirate wedding after this, complete with swordfighting and cannons!
This track is called "What Shall We Die For", which if you listen closely during the second half of the finale when the key changes there's a choir in the background that's singing the lines "yo-ho all together, hoist the colour high..."
The music of the entire first trilogy is spectacular, no exceptions.
The girls laughing at jacks name in the beginning probably has some bedsheet history with him
You're right, the film IS fantastic.
Pudgey's laugh at 3:39 was everything.
I always like to point out that Will was stabbed by Davy Jones with the sword he gave the father in the first movie. The sword had its own journey.
My favorite detail of the trilogy is the ghost story of Dead Man's Chest; when Elizabeth hides on the merchant vessel and the crew finds her wedding dress, one of them sailors spins the tale that the dress belongs to a bride who became widowed before her wedding night;
and then in At World's End, this tale becomes true; Elizabeth and Will are finally wed but he dies... and they consume their marriage afterwards
Now if one of our heroes had gone out like that it would be my fave of all time
49:43 : i love this scene too when the Flying Dutchman survive and came out of the water
IT'S EPIC
This trilogy was truly a perfect trilogy. Still one of the best ever made. Fun fact, Jack's dad was played by Keith Richards, the guitarist for the Rolling Stones, whose real life persona was a huge inspiration for Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow.
What I loved about the third movie is that it brought in other famous pirates from around the world. Parts 4 and 5 carry this theme forward.
I loved the flags shown in that on scene because I recognized a few of them
Jack's father is Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
Johnny Depp based his character on him
13:37
Jack became a space pirate confirmed!!!
Pudgey lowekey crushing on will at the end there lol
Their reaction to every plot point
Every plot twist and reveal in this movie is essentially
Oh no. , Oh yeah , oh what 😂😂
"And that was without a single drop of rum."
When her Father says, "I'll give your love to your mother, shall I?" It breaks me 😑
2:50 Very close, but the 'Fate Intervening' was actually about Will 😉 Calypso says the same thing when she meets Will, 'Their is an air of destiny around you', and again when they see the souls pass....
42:15 : i love Barbossa's laugh
PUDGEY is on it!! She remembers all the details! Love it! ❤
So Will essentially became the ferryman forever right which means one day, he’ll have to help Elizabeth, his son, etc his entire line pass to the afterlife, well, unless he has them join the crew after they die I guess
Barbossa is my fav char and so much character development of the three main cast members in this trilogy and esp in this movie
I love that Captain Jack sparrow is nimble on his feet at sea. But can't walk straight online.😂
“Bootleg Bill” 😂😂😂
I may have been watching a movie reaction on another channel when I got the notification about this video... and I miiiight have abandoned the other video. 🤭
🤣🤣🤣🙏
11:13 pain, all I know is pain
19:32 that part is heartbreaking 😢
48:25 part of the crew, part of the ship, part of the crew, part of the ship
you should 100% react to the bloopers from these movies after youve seen them theyre hilarious
I still maintain that the Maelstrom battle is one of the greatest set pieces in film history. You guys are absolutely right that we don't get scenes like that anymore.
Another great film that is kind of similar is the Three Musketeers, that Orlando Bloom plays in as well.
In all the reactions I've seen of this movie, you're the first folks to mention that Jack took some shots while talking to Beckett and performed that escape from his ship. 🥰
Was it not rum he drank? Semantics. He did catch a buzz before that move. 😋
"Hey guys, I've been waiting for your video! Finally! This makes my day perfect. I like you guys!"
lol spartan loves those Ws over Pudgey "Maelstrom"
41:00 he was crying because he loves her…and hate her :) god I love their storyline. I wish to see more of it. Touching 😢
I've had so much fun watching you two react to this trilogy! You guys make me laugh 😅
He doesn’t love Calipso. If you listened they said “speak it as if too a lover” so say the words nicely basically.
There's a movie that i LOVE called "Extremelly Loud And Incredibly Close", there's no reactions of it on RUclips, and that's sad cause is one of the most emotional drama movie i've ever watched! The characters are SO good and charismatic, played by the actors Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and John Goodman! It's one of my favorite movies EVER, u need to watch PLEASE
This one had the darkest opening of the 5 films, and is the darkest movie in the franchise. 💜
really been enjoying seeing you guys watching this trilogy!
sidenote: it didn't make sense for Jack to become captain of the Dutchman. Jack saw the Pearl as freedom. Jack wants freedom and to live forever. As cap of the Duthman, you're only free 1 day for 10 years.
The 2000-2010 era of action movies was goated, Pirates transformers Harry Potter iron man LotR the list goes on and on
You'll love Black Sails! A 2010s TV show, one of the first big budget post game of thrones TV shows and its insanely good!
For sure!
They should definitely give it a try because that's a fantastic show! I'd say it's more mature and much more realistic than PotC.
With that being said, PotC 3 is my favorite movie of all time, so I may be a bit biased towards pirate stories in general😊
@@olhabaliasina Same POTC3 has always been my fav! Pirates + Fantasy is such a good mix and 3 does it the best imo.
Black Sails definitely has a more serious tone than PotC but I'm sure they'd love it!
At Worlds End is what some might call the ending of the Pirates story. 4 and 5 are just spin-off adventures
They're all good and entertaining movies though, that add more understanding to the story!
@@Fraggelmann I like 4 & 5
This is such a great movie, it really ends the trilogy on a high note. It’s a somewhat complicated plot, but no scene is wasted and it’s a really character driven story which helps elevate it. Plus, it’s really funny!
Already seen it on patreon but here again to support you guys 💕
🥰🙏
10:14 I have never seen Spartans throat move like that 😏
If you want to watch another great movie with Elizabeth Swan (Kiera Knightly) and Beckett (Tom Hollander) I HIGHLY recommend watching the 2005 Pride and Prejudice! Kiera Knightly is the main character and Tom’s character Mr Collin’s is absolutely hilarious and I think you guys would like this movie with its amazing cinematography!
Not sure if you picked up on it, but the Captain playing the guitar at the Pirate meeting is actually Keith Richards formerly of the Rolling Stones! who Johney Depp based his acting of Jack Sparrow on..
nice i really like these reactions i have 2 hours of work and it fits perfectly.
Edit : Lmao jack really pulled the trigger first in the standoff hahahaha
Something about freeing Calypso has always made me think of The Odyssey and the Iliad. There was mention of the Trojan horse in the first film.
I just realized Barbossa was the only one to call Elizabeth Turner
Have you seen Black sails? Great pirate show
Orlando Bloom made sweet fa from lotr something like 170k from all 3, it was his breakout role.. made a tonne and a half from pirates though
Im sure someone has already said but the guy with one eye who releases calipso, plays one of the wildlings john snow climbs the wall with he is there warg.
