Excellent stuff. I made great use of your suggestions in all your videos. I ended up having Harbin Wester be the Black Spider's secret agent in Phandalin instead of Glasstaff though, since I didn't really like Glasstaf. I used Glasstaff as the visible face of the Redbrands, not as a defector.
It was kind of a running gag for a session or two that Harbin was never actually in his office, or always too busy to meet with the party. The truth is that he was murdered by Vyerith a few months ago, and she ended up taking his place, inviting in and allowing the Redbrands to fester an take hold in the town by playing an incompetent, lazy fool while actually running things from behind the scenes. The woodcarver was killed because he accidentally found out the truth. It gave the Black Spider a more direct role and presence, and led to a fun showdown in the town hall once the players figured it out.

Played one of the Doppelgangers as the Black Spider's spy in Phandalin, posing as Harbin Wester, keeping in check Glasstaff too.
This is a relatively new change, maybe a few days before players arrive. If the players talk to it, it poses as a weirdo, speaking in short sentences, pausing often and staring at them. It does not consider Redbrands as a threat, and it is very willing to send the heroes outside of the village to kill the orcs, intending to ambush them on the road, if they make it out alive.
Players also get a weird headache after such talks...
Then, when the players investigate the crevasse in Tresendar Manor, apart from the half-eaten body of Thel, they also find Harbin's, extra surprised if they previously talked to him. After Tresendar, if the Doppelganger has not been notified, an encounter at the Townmaster's Hall is unavoidable, in which if it doesn't escape, the players now know there are shapechangers in Black Spider's employ.

In the campaign that I’m currently running I’ve made Harbin Wester a doppleganger. He’s there to spy on the town (and Iarno) for Nezznar, as well as be a messenger to Glasstaff on behalf of the Black Spider. So far the PCs haven’t caught on to him yet, but they’ve barely started on the Redbrand hook, so there’s still time for them to figure things out.

Harbin Wester is a good character to replace with a doppelganger. I hope the rest of the Lost Mine of Phandelver video series has been helpful.

Great video, your thinking about Harbin's personality matches what I thought as I was reading the adventure guide. I hadn't paid too much attention to his banking past and a possible desire of his to set up his own bank in the future; fantastic idea and a potentially interesting hook for future narratives.
I think I was harsher in judging his character than you; his pomposity means that my version of his character considers himself to be doing a reasonable job and he feels threatened by the arrival of Sildar (a person clearly more suited to the frontier life of Phandalin!)
Great stuff, I'm loving your videos. Very thorough and thought provoking, really is helping me to get to grips with running this adventure. Thanks for your time in producing these guides.
