As a kid, I wouldn't have gotten why it made ppl wanna cry (though rest assured that I understand now). For me, I was addicted to this song because it made me feel really happy in a strange, new and strong way, unlike anything I'd ever felt before in my child life; and I just couldn't get enough of it! To this day, it remains a comfort song of mine.
Nostalgia is the combination of both sad and happiness, maybe that's why you felt happy in a strange way while others felt sad in a weird way. This feeling happens to me with the Mario Land theme
I’m still a young lad going through my childhood still and I have that feeling as well. It’s such a bittersweet song like the others said and it also feels reassuring. It tells you to not give up and move forward and I like that.
I'd like to thank you for the bits of this video where you sang examples yourself - not only is your voice lovely, but they were incredibly effective illustrations. Your points were that much easier to get with your great examples beside them!
It's funny how you mention this "nostalgic sadness" that comes from the song's construction, because I feel the same way with Sonic 3D Blast's end credits theme for the Genesis version, knowing that that was Sonic's last Genesis outing, plus also being one of the last official games released for the console. It just gives off this "end of an era" vibe, and I wonder if that's what Jun Senoue intended.

Also, kudos for getting around copyright issues by singing the mainstream record label songs yourself. That's handy, lol Well, time to watch your entire catalogue!
Another awesome analysis, love it! I had no idea Endless Mine's melody pops up in so much other Sonic music, that's mindblowing. Also, OOT's title music is such a perfect example of the major 7th having a nostalgic quality! Keep it up man 👍
Yep :) can confirm. As an 8 year old playing this game, I used to play this level on repeat to listen to this song. It felt so nostalgic, like it was unlocking a long forgotten memory I didn’t know I had. Like saying hello or even goodbye to an old friend 🤷♂️ As a kid, I just assumed that this was the place on Angel Island that Knuckles had been born, as it was underground, the music was nostalgic and you could actually play as him here 👍😅
Wait what the fuck??? That's why this 1 esoteric song is so familiar?? It's been reused everywhere??? From twinkle park's race section, sonic mania's title screen, and even city escape to some extent... That's fuckin insane
Dude this is the same progression I been talking about for years and you got it spot on especially with twinkle park. Most of my fave sonic songs have this
I didn't expect this video to be made so well and peak my interest in music theory. I felt like I've learned something of value watching this. Keep it up, also great singing voice btw.
Looks like I finally got my answer. Amazing video, it's genuinely moving to see a breakdown of music that imprinted on me so strongly when I was a child.
This reminds me of a funny story. When i was in 4th grade, i had a friend whose name was Nicholas. A year later, i changed schools and thought i would never seen him again, but when i was in 8th grade, i came back to that school and i found a person who was familiar for me, i became his friend, then days later, i realised he was Nicholas. Maybe i'm just dumb, but that was interesting.
I'm very glad that there are people who appreciate S3&K's compositions. The amount of attention to subtle details in these tracks and effort you put in these videos is incredible. Those comments you mentioned in the video don't lie; I also found Endless Mine theme melancholic when I was 6, and now it feels nostalgic and still sad to me. I've loved this game's soundtrack since childhood and you've made me love it even more now. Very well done !
"During the final boss sequence where Sonic fights Robotnik on the dance floor of Micheal Jackson's Billy Jean music video-" *Excuse me, Sonic does what*
When I first heard Endless Mine as a kid, it was love at first note, I guess. I even had dreams about different covers of this tune. I'm glad to see it's really exceptional.
Maybe the reason the strong use of the 7th degree in a melody can feel so nostalgic because its this absolute longing to return to the roots, to the home key and that tension that comes with it, and also dissonance from being one of 2 notes being a semitone interval and having more weight
I love this video, I just want to express my gratitude for the amount of work and effort you put into these. This song absolutely has made me feel something my entire life and I always am grounded and returned to that "feeling" every time I hear it. Thank you for deconstructing it into a digestible format.

Man, I'm so glad I found your videos because despite having no drive to practice any music I find musical Theory infinitely interesting and I'm super appreciative for the depth you go into each of these songs! There's other channels where musical expert listen to a song and go "ha ha yup, this is good" and say basically nothing else, and then there's ones who's depth have taught me a lot and given me a greater appreciation for the thought and work that goes into writing Great and Fitting music for all kinds of media. The simplicity of your explanations somehow has granted me more "aha!" moments than any other channel I've watched before. and I had to come back after a few days and leave this comment because this song in particular is one I'd never listened to or heard of before watching your video, but it makes me want to cry. And thanks to the care you put into the video I know exactly why that is.
This piece of music made me cry so much when I first heard it as a kid, and I never knew why lol. Even now it has this sad quality to it that makes me tear up, except that it really is actual nostalgia. This game (the two cartridges together) was the last time I ever enjoyed a Sonic game - it's been decades. None that came after this really captured the feeling in either gameplay or music. I recently watched the Sonic 2 movie, and the nostalgia it brought up made me seek out Sonic 3 content again lol. And I found this channel.

This is the first video I've watched from you and was pleasantly surprised to hear you sing the example songs. That was a treat and effective! Also I started losing my mind when you sang "Baby" with the reverb on (and all the other songs in that section) because it is one thing to know "yeah a lot of songs use the same chord progressions". It is an ENTIRELY different feeling to have them presented rapid-fire like that. Loved that. XD
I know this video is 2 years old at the time of me commenting this, but I love your work! I’ve always been interested in music theory and leitmotifs as such, and to see Endless Mine’s brilliance be referenced in other sonic games and even parts of the song be found in popular non video game music is super cool! Great work!
Sonic music defined my childhood, and influences my adult life still. The way that all these songs share DNA is like having a direct line to those memories some 30 years ago.

That Billie Jean joke was hilarious! Could we get an episode about the music of a PS2 platformer, like the Ratchet, Jak or Sly Cooper Series? Also the part with the pop songs is always hilarious and educative at the same time.
People getting sad from this song caught me off guard. I always felt this song was a whimsical adventure piece that, for me at least, instills a weird type of joy akin to nostalgia. But not quite there.
Found your channel on my recommended page today and just binged through them all. I had never heard all these 2 Player Sonic 3 tracks before as I never had Sonic 3 as a kid on the Megadrive, just 1, 2 & Sonic & Knuckles. Amazing to know about this Endless Mine motif! Fantastic video! Would love to hear Sandopolis music breakdown next. Why most never liked the level, I always thought it was one of the most immersive stages.
I think that the purpose that Endless Mine was made like this was for the purpose of reminding you that this is the last stage of Multiplayer, and that it sadly is where it all ends.
There's pretty much 3 melodies/rhythms that signify return to the classic era in Mania. Teaser Trailer: Uses the beginning of the Sonic 3D Blast Ending, which basically was the end end of Classic Sonic, and said teaser said that they were going back Beginning Beginning of Mania's Title: Uses the rising notes found in Sonic 1, one significant part of "returning to Classic Sonic" As you said after that part: Endless Mine's rhythm means we've picked back up on the good ol' 2D spritemation days
6:08 Come to think, isn't the same music theory discussed from here on--a major key song used in a melancholy way--used in a similar way in "Just Around The Riverbend" from Pocahontas? That song is in C Major, and while it's not necessarily a sad song, it still has an air of wistfulness and melancholy combined with a sense of ambition and triumph to it to represent Pocahontas being a risktaker and feeling strong in her convictions while simultaneously feeling conflicted about her dreams--torn between yearning for a life of adventure outside of the comfort of her village or settling down with Kocoum and accepting the path chosen for her. I could be wrong but I think the song emphases the 7th a lot as well.
This song also reeks of "If I Never Knew You" from Pocohontas. My sister used to watch it all the time, so me playing Endless Mine about 5 minutes after the movie really stuck those 2 songs together for me. Greta video.
