Probably one of the most beautiful songs every written in the Dutch language. The incredible instruments from the orchestra, combined with the poetic lyrics makes this a small treasure for the ears. I’m really proud that this song was written and composed by my fellow Haarlemmers: Boudewijn de Groot & Lennaert Nijgh. But it couldn’t be performed better than by Ramses Shaffy & Liesbeth List. These 4 truly created a masterpiece with this song.
Totally agree with the above. One of the most beautiful musical pieces in the Dutch language. Also kudo's to the one who subtitled this, he or she did an amazing job. Not translating word by word, but somewhat looser to better convey the meaning of the sentences.
This song mostly about their complex relationship. Every word, every sentence, refers to it. There is a deep double meaning to it. 'You cannot love the sun!' it will burn you, destroy you when you come too close, tear up everything you care for, yet you cannot exist without it... She loved him dearly, passionately, and couldn't live without him, he was her inspiration. Yet he lived a different life. Was gay, ended up in all kind of relations, got disappointed, turned to alcohol and drugs, got depressed. And every time she pulled him out of the shit and put him back on his tracks. But he wanted to be free, and unbound to anyone, so he made the same mistakes over and over again. And though she knew they couldn't have the relation she wanted, she stayed committed to him.
Song is written by Boudewijn de Groot and great lyrics by Lennaert Nijgh. They did also "Meneer de President" also present on your channel. Ramses Shaffy is the sun and Liesbeth List the earth in this story. Greetings from The Netherlands.
The only thing that always has bothered me is how casual he says: "Je kunt niet houden van de zon". To me it felt that the writer wanted that to be expressed with much more emotion and strength. More drama perhaps.
This is epic. Hearing this after decades again gave me goosebumps. It should be part of the Dutch Canon. Well done Ramses, Liesbeth, Boudewijn en Lennart.👍👍
Brings me back to my childhood. Even back then I absolutely loved this song. It has a special place in my heart, just like Paolo Conte's "Max". Completely different style, but it also gave me strong feelings every time I heard it.
A unique dutch classic song. The love between the sun and the earth. The singers also had a unique relationship. They loved each other but never lived together.

I used to have an LP with this song.. sang and danced the hell out of it when i was 9 or 10 when I was alone in my room early 80s This and meester prikkebeen.. I was a weird kid. Even then.
I think this is the most beautiful song and music ever written in the Dutch language. The singers and songwriter had very complicated characters. The singers were deeply in love with each other for years, but never married or even shared a home. The songwriter lived on a ship in Haarlem at the time, I think (he was an alcoholic).
@ That’s as may be, but he did not have a sexual relationship with Liesbeth List. My family was close to her parents and their biggest regret was that she ended up with ‘the great’ Cees Nooteboom in stead of the man she really loved: Ramses Shaffy.🤷🏼♀️
NOOOOOO MY GOD!!! :D I wanted to request this one some day! (Perhaps I did mention it a few times in the comments, but I had no subs.) Awesome, gonna check right away! Good to see that Dutch fans here have such good taste! :D
"Simply worded"? Haha, it's poetic as hell! I wonder at which point you'll find out that he's supposed to be the sun in this song. :-) This song always reminds me of the Star Trek episode "Masks" in which Data gets influenced by some ancient alien object from an extinct species, and gets programmed to be their sun god. In the end of the episode, Picard needs to become the moon god to put him to rest.
Sadly both Liesbeth List and Ramses Shaffy have both now departed, but they've left a lot for us to enjoy. There's a great RUclips video of them singing this duet live, both well advanced in years but still magical.
In 2009, a few weeks before Ramses passed away, i was figurating in a videoclip from a group and then suddenly i saw Ramses walking with his "rollator" walker, but i was afraid to ask a picture with him. That's why i do regret it a bit that i didn't ask him.
Hey man, love your channel, always awesome to see you cover dutch videos I was hoping you could do one that is really dear to me: Boudewijn de Groot - Verdronken Vlinder
I think the guy has narcissistic tendencies (everything evolves around me, like the sun. You cannot love the sun), but the lady does not want to listen to his warnings... she keeps on loving him even though there is a chance that she may get burned by him.

Ramses Shaffey was gay, so there was no chance of him and Liesbeth List ever coming together😏
@@annemariehoutenbos212 he was bisexual

Its a conversation between the fiery male sun aroynd whom everything revolves and the sunloving feminine earth.
For me this is childhood sentiment, it's nice to hear your comments on it
Stays good this classic song 👍
Beautiful Dutch music history🌟❤
Not only in Holland, also in Belgium it's a classic.

Me too.

Wow flash back to my youth. Great lyrics by Boudewijn de Groot 👏
Lennart Nijgh.....
This is my all time favorite Dutch song.

Hey man, love your channel, always awesome to see you cover dutch videos
I was hoping you could do one that is really dear to me:
Boudewijn de Groot - Verdronken Vlinder
The creator speaks
After this you should listen to the song 'De Sneeuwkoningin'(The Snowqueen) a solosong by Liesbeth. It is written as a diptych with this song.
Hi, Please add your suggestions to googleform. You can find the link under every video. Make sure it has english subtitles though. Thanks

Love that song. Never knew what it was about though. Still don't...even with English subs, lol
It's about the love between the sun (shaffy) and the earth (list)
@@Tuinlaaf thanx...im not that poetic, lol
Hij is de zon en zij is de aarde
To me ??? Best Dutch song ever
