Ought to be an outstanding trip, hopefully the snow won't hinder reaching Grumpy's or the store. This year will be unique due to the amount of snow and water flow. Should be beautiful, have fun and be careful.
I've done KM South and find it a great place to enjoy the peace and quiet. The hikes along the PCT are just great. I would come here for some training on my Mt Whitney climbs. The restaurant and store are good, and the folks are friendly. I was given rides several times to and from there while doing my favorite segment on the PCT (less than 500 miles to Yosemite). It's also a good starting point for winter backpacking trips into the high Sierras.
I really liked this place too, got to head back up there again. That Nine Mile road's no joke and it's hard on your brakes coming down, thank God I've got a manual shift Jeep so I just drop down into 3rd gear and cruise without laying on the brakes.
This is all very familiar places to me. But last time I visited Burro Schmidt's house in 2009, the interior walls were mostly intact. I'm REALLY bothered by how the place has been trashed recently. I've vacationed with my family at Kennedy Meadows lots of times. And Troy Meadows and Monache Meadows. Done Sherman Jeep trail in both of my Baja Bugs and in my friend's 1942 Jeep. I've fished for trout in the South Fork of the Kern. And I've converted a horse barn into a house closer to the Fire Station. Turnoff @13:07. Spent 5 days a week living there for several months. Started in triple digit weather, finished in sub-zero just before Christmas. Lived off the land mostly as most of the crew were professional hunters and fishermen. Trout, quail, duck, dove, deer, rabbit, etc. When my wife and I retired I started making plans to hike the PCT in segments. Then only 2 months in, cancer changed those plans. Oh well. Been to the bridge several times. Have a picture of our Kelpy sheep dog laying in the river on the way back to the meadows. We have, in fact, camped in that same campsite before. We were at the site next to the PCT sign in for the 2017 eclipse of the sun. Nearly total there and it was on our 35th wedding anniversary.
Sounds like you've had quite the awesome adventures over the years like me. I've got my eye on Monache Meadows for a Jeep trip and I've routed out my backpack trip to the South Fork of the Kern. My 1st backpack trip when I was 17 we went up the Jerkey Meadows Trail to the fork of the kern and that's what got me started. Carried a 70 lb pack and three of us slept in a two-man army pup tent, oh how times have changed.
Man loving your old school coleman ice-chest I don't think I've seen one of those in a LONG time. That pour-over coffee looks pretty good. The wind out here is brutal though. Looks like you guys had an outstanding trip! I appreciate how you show the landmarks on how to get there. That 9 mile road is "interesting".For whatever reason I haven't seen a bear box in most of the Sequoia and Inyo areas.
Anthony Do u think a small Escape SUV (2 wd only) would do ok on the road up to Kennedy Meadows & the campground PCT trailhead beyond. I m heading up,there in about 9 days, on 9/12/22, assuming the current hot temps moderate a bit. thanx.
No problem, its paved all the way, just make sure your car can handle the steep incline in the heat without overheating and your brakes are good for the drive down. Use lower gear going down and lay off the brakes as much as possible.
I had my first beer in front of the kennedy meadows store .spent many years up there riding dirtbikes and horses.....is that an akubra hat you have on?
Just saw this video, only a year late. From Kennedy Meadows you could have turned west on the road and gone over 9200 foot Sherman Pass then down to Kernville and west on 178 to Bakersfield then north or south to home.
The campground was really nice and spread out. We were there in November and it was mostly empty. The restrooms were closed but they provided outhouses to use and at least they were clean and well stocked. Due to the fire restrictions fires were not allow at the time but several people still had them.
Great video. What do you use to communicate between you and the others in your party? I have considered walkie talkies. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
Gerry and I are licensed Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) so we use mobile radios inside our vehicles. Sometimes we use HT's on the trail, Gerry always brings his Yaesu VX7 but I usually forget my VX5. Motorola One Sports are great for car to car or on the trail.
I think the bears are going to hang out where there is more natural food for them... Humans and their food is a desert. And yes some butt head stole the sign.
That was on the road to Burro Schmidt's Mine and Tunnel. It was about 9 miles of rough dirt and sandy road. The Tahoe didn't air down but he has larger tires than mine.

This is a great idea to visit got some great fishing in this area
Great video…my grandson and I have been there many times over the years…thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Excellent and informative video. Heading to Kennedy Meadows tomorrow so thanks for the tour!

Were you able to find camping spot near Kennedy Meadows?

I always think of Sonora Pass when I hear Kennedy Meadows I need to ride south to this Kennedy Meadows my son went through while on the PCT
The cabin saddens me deeply i lived in Mojave for 35 years and was out there every weekend
Wish I could have seen it years ago when Toni Seger was still alive, would have been interesting to listen to some of her stories.
Nice overview… very enjoyable. Thank you.

Fantastic views, great landscape. Nice hike and Vlog. Take care. You have a fantastic day.
Many thanks!
1st timer - obviously !!! very green around the gills . . . Welcome to the front 40.
Thanks for the trip.
Great video, but would've been nice to see the entrance to the campground or maybe what the layout looks like. Maybe next time 👍
Good job !

that's the longest I seen coffee be made
Fantastic video
Thanks! 😃 glad you liked it.
I had my first beer in front of the kennedy meadows store .spent many years up there riding dirtbikes and horses.....is that an akubra hat you have on?
Yes Sir, its an Akubra Cattleman, one of my favorite hats.
Nice I have that one and about 10 more different akubras love em for all weather
Was there at store in 61 thru 67.,

Great to know, I really have to get back out there, its a beautiful area.
What did you think of the campground there? Are there any other campgrounds around?

Great video but a coffee percolator will give you MUCH better coffee😀
I've got one of those too, when I'm using my old Coleman Stove nothing beats good ol perculator coffee, the smell is awesome.
Very nice, sir may i ask if some campsites look suitable for a 34ft trailer?
our space was pretty large, if you separated your truck from the trailer it would fit I think.
You'd probably barely fit but sperate the trailer
9 mile road is scary AF. I don’t know what’s worst,,,going up it or coming back down.
The only time I've seen the South Fork of the Kern River is when it cross the Sierra Highway
What is the coffee filter brand?
It was Kuju, now my Go-To pour over coffee. Better than the instant just add water type. www.kujucoffee.com/

@@Anthonysaudiojournal Thanks for the quick reply.
What time of year is this ?
Our trip was in November during a rather dry year.
There are no more bears in central California only up North
I think the bears are going to hang out where there is more natural food for them... Humans and their food is a desert. And yes some butt head stole the sign.
Enjoy, helpful comment below to
What road did your travel that required the air down?
That was on the road to Burro Schmidt's Mine and Tunnel. It was about 9 miles of rough dirt and sandy road. The Tahoe didn't air down but he has larger tires than mine.

What time of year was this? Were the water levels average for that time of year?
This was in November during a less than average year. Its been really bad the last few years and its taking its toll.
🇹🇷💯👍
I need to get a vehicle
