- Here's how to grow pear trees from seed. It is easy, fun and gives you your very own pear tree varieties. I gained a TON of weight for this vid, folks.

All you need to do is eat a pear or two and save the seeds. Do not dry them out. Stratify your pear seeds in the fridge using the moist soil and baggie method. Once you see little roots and shoots, the pear seeds have germinated and it's time to transplant your seedling.
Sometimes pear seeds will already be germinating inside the fruit or
will start right away when planted, as pears are usually stored under refrigeration which breaks the dormancy cycle of the seed, so sometimes all you need to sprout pear seeds is to plant them directly.
Don’t place your newly transplanted pear seedlings right into full sun.
Find a shady spot and put them there and take extra care when they’re young. Seedling pears are very prone to rotting, so don’t overwater them. Soon they’ll be large enough transplant into your orchard or food forest. Seedling pears also make good rootstocks for grafting.

My biggest revelation was the first video I saw of yours about starting fruit from seed and you made the point that you could just graft into it. It was such a "duh" thing, but really opened me up to the possibilities. If it dies, you're not out any money; if it thrives, you have a rootstock that's well-adapted to your location; and if you're really lucky, you'll end up with amazing fruit that no one else has. I'm currently dreaming up a nursery where I can start trialing things from seed, but in the meantime I'm starting air layers from all of the fruit trees at my grandfather's property, and taking cuttings from anything that people will let me... or don't catch me taking. 😂
@@ThunderStruck15 You can buy scions. Many areas also have annual scion exchanges. And then there's just good ol' asking around. Friends, neighbors, social media, classified/bartering sites. Foraging also turns up lots of stuff.

i have managed to grow a necturine and peach and plum from seed no stratification just removeed shell and planted in potting soil and perlite a and 4 are about a year now and growing well .I learned it from a lady on youtube.
I grew an apple tree from seed when my son was born so I named the fruit after him. I have another on the way and am doing it again.
Shared! In a FB group for winter sowing, this could easily be adapted to that technique of outdoor controlled stratification.

We're just developing a Scottish Highlands croft (a family owned small farm, ours is 5 acres). We've made a great start into the livestock side of life (hence I stumbled across your composting video, as we've a LOT of poop and spent bedding materials to try to make the most of in the garden). Super early days yet but we're looking to grow more, to develop, improve and add to the perennials and tree life on the croft. Thank you for your post! I grew up on a street named Birchcroft Drive. Now I know what that means. We've been working on names for our 5 acre homestead.... think we will use the word "croft" now instead of the word "homestead" on our sign (less letters too).

Trying this on some pears from my dads old homestead. They are over 100 year old trees. Real trees and not grafted. Hopefully this will work.

Most palm seeds can be planted in a well-draining medium and watered regularly until they sprout. A warm place is best. I've seen ornamental palm seeds just stuck on their sides, half-buried, in trays of moist soil. Sometimes they take a few months.
So i have an old pear tree that is slowly on her way out. I got a small harvest of pears in August. I want to propagate from seeds
My question is can i grow them now or is it better to plant them in the following spring???
If so do i dry them up or keep them in soil in the fridge untill spring?

Since it's a temperate fruit doesn't it need cold weather to set fruit?
You’ll just have to pick off all the leaves that will trigger it like cold weather does.

Ps cant fix my comment but, i chose to grow green danjou pears :) they are my favorite I’m gonna grow Fuji apples next and cuties citrus mandarin oranges if i can but they’re seedless so how would you grow them
Plant another orange's seed, then find a mandarin to graft onto it later.

Do pear seeds store well? I have some, but it's October, not sure if I should try to plant them now, or save them.
In a baggie of soil, chilled in the fridge, they can keep a few months.

Help, Help, Help! I have had excellent luck with stratification and sprouts, but... When I plant the sprouts they witherin a few weeks, after looking just fine. My latest crop are growing like crazy and I'm afraid they are outgrowing the strength of their spindly stems (trunks). They are indoors and not in direct sun, in clay pots. They have two leaves showing with another set on the way. What are my mistakes?

I have only one pear tree in my backyard. Is it absolutely necessary to have one more to cross pollinate and bear fruit or one is enough?
Some seem to self-pollinate just fine; however, you can graft a couple varieties onto the same tree and you'll really get great pollination.
Do i have to put the seed in a certain direction? I actually have no idea where they are the bag dropped (arthritis lol) so do i have to find them and put them in properly?

It grows easily from seed. Probably about 4 years to fruit. If the parent is good, the fruit should be good.

Hey, David! On a tangentially related note, do you know anything about propagating Yaupon Holly? I ask because I'm pretty sure it's native to Florida, so thought you might have experience with it. It should grow where I am, and I'm really looking for a way to grow my caffeine fix.
I have not tried it yet. They sell it in many landscape nurseries. Probably from cuttings, as there are named varieties.
@@davidthegood That's kinda what I was hoping. I found a source for seeds, but starting them from seeds sounds like a huge pain because they're so slow to germinate. It's one of the few things that seemed like it would be worth buying as an actual plant as long as I could get lots of cuttings from it.

it depends on what conditions/enviroment the seed was before. if it had been in room temperature for a day...freezing will retard the germination.

Right from the fruit. They do not store well.
@@davidthegood Thanks David, the tree we have is at least 60 years old and from what I am told it is a Bartlett. We may need to start a new one soon, event though this one is still producing a lot of pears.
You can start seedlings and graft onto them next year if you want the same type.
David the good- stratification or scarification? I believe it is the latter, please check.

My pear seeds have sprouts now, ready to put in soil, I have really old horse manure in the barn to, im nervous cause every time I plant a sprouted seed it dies😢
Sometimes horse manure has chemicals in it that will kill plants. See: aminopyralid
I just juiced 10 pounds of lemons and I've saved their seeds I know those don't go in the refrigerator And I was given some Peaches and plums and those seeds should go in the refrigerator correct
That's correct. Stone fruits need stratification. I've actually gotten a number from my compost where I threw them in the previous year and then the next year they sprout once it warms up a bit.
@@baddriversofcolga Thank you for the info Bad driver, I am in zone 10B we never get a chill of any kind I do have several baby Peach trees all over my yard And the oldest one is 4 years old and I've been getting free even from the second year and there from a desert gold Peach 200 chill hours, but these are seeds from a plum clot they claim their locally grown But I don't trust that so I will take two of the seeds and put them in pots the other three are going in the fridge in dirt

Everyone skips over, when in fridge, what 2, 3 weeks? Are you supposed to sandpaper the shell? Another guy says paper towel in bag but warm and moisdryish. Who to believe?
I leave them for a few months if need be, but often they sprout in a few weeks. When they sprout I take them out. Sometimes fruit in the store has been under refrigeration for a long time, too, and the seeds pop almost immediately. I don't sandpaper them.
Is grafting similar to GMO?
No, not at all. It is just taking a piece of one tree and putting it on another. It was practiced even in ancient Israel.
I did this on wet paper towel and germinated apple and pear seeds. I transplanted them out way too young tho and something prob pests ate them 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️I was so sad
I had some apple seeds we did this with same thing. But we will try again.

If you plant a pear seed from a pear you like, it should be a pear.
3 to 4 months??? Plastic bag and paper towel in 1 to 2 weeks.
