"Finally, Fly Fishing The Brodhead", Sept. 2020

- Wow! It's been over a year, but I finally made a video on the Brodhead Creek. A tough day nymphing, and sorry I didn't find a good time to try out the dry/dropper setup. But, just as I was about to call it a day, some hungry fish started to feed on top, presenting us with some good dry fly action. In all, still a fun day, but I do think the long drawn out high water temps and the extended drought this Summer, plus the crowded Coronavirus fishing season this year, did take a toll on some of the Brodhead's trout population. Not complaining, just saying. Besides the Upper Delaware, I really haven't been testing many other trout streams this Summer, I'm anxious to see how other streams made out when Fall arrives with some relief with cooler temps and hopefully some desperately needed rain. Got my fingers crossed and a few prayers wouldn't hurt.
I love how you explore the rocks . And love those little pools at the end. The Kern river is kinda like this water.
Great vid brother.
Cant belive the top water bite became wide open. So fun
Hi Pat! As fly fishermen we should always check the rocks, especially on streams we’re not familiar with, so much information on the creek bottoms. It at least gets you in the ballpark of what’s going on in that stream at the time. Pays to be a good student of the art. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I was up there in the dead heat of Summer for business and figured I’d swing by and take a shot. Did well in the early morning but as soon as the sun broke the tree line the switch was flipped off. The Brodhead is so great. Can’t wait for the cool weather and some rain. Just tied some of the “Scott’s Iso” pattern and now I may have to tie up some wiggle versions. Tight lines Scott!!
Steve Lange Hey Steve! That’s awesome! Remember I tye that wiggle version with a standard dry fly hook size 16 for the Thorax, make the connecting loop with 4x and the abdomen with a 16-1xl hook, also been breaking off the back hook when finished, gets tangled too much if you don’t, remember don’t break it off until the end of tying the abdomen, you need it to hold the hook in the vise. Good luck and have fun!
Great day! Thanks for sharing Scott. We really could use some rain right about now!
Joseph Stella Hey Joe! Nice to hear from you. You’re telling me! Not much in the forecast either ☹️. Glad you enjoyed it.
I love this video along with all your others. They teleport me right to the banks of our beautiful Pa streams and rivers. Keep it up man.👍🐟
Thank you brother! Glad you’re enjoying them. Always streamside with PA WOODS N WATER. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Really enjoyed this video. Educational and extremely helpful.
Had a few chuckles at the stone flipping and gasping at bugs. I do the same myself. I guess the boy inside us all never grows up!
alpha scouser Haha! Thank you buddy! Yep, I’m a skinny old guy on the outside but a fat little boy on the inside. Love my sweets 🍭 Always a surprise flipping rocks, so much fun. Used to love catching crayfish as a kid too. Glad you enjoyed it. Nice to hear from you. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Always fun to get some nice fish after a summer of low water. Good luck this archery season and I’m looking forward to some central pa videos to come. Thanks for being such a great teacher of the sport! Ian
Ian Hoose You betcha Ian! Love helping guys out, hoping guys get into more fish and have more fun. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I too did well on a red spinner fall years ago. Thanks for the reminder!
Thank you too, oh yeah, don’t forget those spinners, especially when you see them sipping. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Scott I love your videos and all the info you share. I’ve fished the broadhead through the trust but never this area. Thanks again
Hi David! Thank you very much! Yes, a bunch of different areas I haven’t fished yet either. So many places, so little time. Thanks for all your support. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Yes way too little time. Just wondering what color glow bug do you find most effective?
@@davidzappulla7744 Pale yellow is by far my best color.
Thanks
Way to pick off that trout at 34:30!!!! I knew there had to be one under that branch!!! Tight lines scott!
Downstream & Downrange Ha Ha! You liked that! Me too! Thanks for watching and all your support.
Another great informative video!!
Thank you Brian! Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gotta love the take on the first cast, doesn't always happen, but it's great when it happens.
Rocco Manginelli Hey hey Rocco! Nice to hear from you. Oh man, you can’t script this stuff, just happens sometimes. As evidenced, NOT always an indication of how the day is gonna go, because nymphing was tough that day. Thankfully, the top water action saved the day. Gotta always be ready from the first cast to the last, ha! Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551
They always strike when you aren't watching you line, ha ha. NJ needs some rain and I'm back out on the stream, fish on!
Scott another great video Keep them coming and stay safe
Snook McDermott Hi Snook! Thank you! Hopefully I’ll get my buck soon then I can get back to fishing. Glad you enjoyed it.
Excellant video Scott, it was nice seeing you turning the rocks over and showing all the bug life.Great seeing the dry fly action,it’s always a lot of fun catching them on top. Also you had your walking shoes on because I have fished this stream and it looks like you went from dansbury park to the hole not far from the moose lodge. We thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, and your approach to fishing streams. All your videos are tops, thanks for sharing.
Debbie Gajdos Hey Debbie! Hope you’re doing well. Thank you for your kind words. Oh yes, put on a good mile plus, did that instead of jogging 🏃 today, ha! I do a 5k 2-3 times a week, so I’m kind of use to it. But boy, those big round rocks do a job on your ankles. Yes, I like showing the bugs too, amazing what’s right under your feet. Hope to bump into you both sometime, you should come down and give the Tully a try this Fall or Winter. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Man that first riffle looks sooooo good. I like the style of that creek, nice mix in water! Great video Scott! Tight lines
Downstream & Downrange Hey Dan! Thank you buddy, but keep watching, it gets better!
PA WOODS N WATER o I’ll be leaving another comment haha just loved that first run
Appreciate you going through all the bugs, the hellgramites are impressive! Awesome dry fly action there at the end. And cool how you challenge yourself to nymph with the shorter rod. Great job Scott!!
Scott Lowe Hey Scott! Yes, I like including some little extras to help people understand more about the bugs, I really like that part of flyfishing also. And the challenge of the shorter rod, like showing people what you can do with different equipment. I remember having only one 8 1/2 ft rod for 20 years and doing everything with it. I’m spoiled now but still love the good old days. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Hellgrammites are dobsonfly larvae. And they will pinch you if given the chance. As you said, great smallie and trout baits. Nice video. Fishing's been tough with all of that heat and low water conditions.
B Dickinson Thank you Mr. Dickinson! That’s right, I forgot the correct name of the fly but isn’t the dragonfly the common name? I don’t know. Yes, conditions were tough on all streams, I’m trying to be optimistic but I know north central PA got hit really hard, I definitely think those streams nay need a supplemental Fall stocking, hope they get it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
B Dickinson Ha! Just Googled it, nope not a dragonfly, looks like a monster stonefly with huge front pinchers! Wow!
@@pawoodsnwater7551 They look almost prehistoric when in flight. The larvae are tough as nails and hold up well on a hook. I rarely fish with bait anymore but have used them in the past. These cooler conditions should help, but some good rains would be a blessing as well.
It's fun catching them on top. Nice job Scott. Heading up to the West Branch in Octo. Good luck hunting.
Richard McNair You betcha! Love catching them on top. Thank you very much. Hope you get into them in October. Have fun!
Nice video, that was some skinny water a the start. Great way to end the day with some dry fly action at the end. Looking forward to next video, stay safe.
Rich McGinn Hi Rich! I know, that was awesome! Good thing I stopped to look at that deep hole or I’d of just walked right by. Funny how done things work out. Appreciate you watching and commenting and all your support.
Great video Scott, I am a newbie to fly fishing and I really enjoy your videos and continue to learn more each time so thank you!
David Stewart Hello David! Happy to have you on board and glad the videos are helping. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Hi Scott
Nice video as always. Was up my place last weekend near there and hit the broadhead Saturday evening and managed to catch a nice 13” rainbow creek is low so I was fishing in about almost a foot of fast water and caught that one. Never underestimate the fast shallow water for them to be in as you always stress in some of your videos.
Keep the vids coming!!
Joseph Sawicki Yo Joe! That’s awesome, absolutely right! So many guys walk right past shallow riffs and pocket water, but those fish know where the bugs are. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Was there Sunday.. saw a bear by the ball field crossing the creek. Beautiful water. Nice to see you finally make it back.
Trevor Corriere Wow! Seriously!? A bear there!? Now that’s exciting, wasn’t looking for bear tracks, next time I will! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Ever fish Mud Run in Hickory Run SP? The sign just as you enter the rhododendrons, "Beware of the Bears" and only enough room for one body width. Like a jungle.
Thomas Gibbons Ha! Fished Mud Run only once, saw several copperheads , caught some fish but that was enough for me
Scott - I head up there 5-6 times a year to camp. About where on the Brodhead were you? I had 20 minutes about 5 days before this video by Yetter park.
Timothy O'Brien Hello Tim! I fished from Dansbury Park up to the Moose Lodge, probably a good mile plus. Have fun! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Awesome video. We are fishing it this morning.
Hey Robert! Good luck! Just gotta report: great caddis hatch in the evening, size 20 tan elk hair or CDC, size 18 pupa underneath with green body and black head, I would bet ISOs around too. Should be good!👍🏻
I need to buy that wiggle nymph...that has to be a killer! Nice video Scott !
Felippe Velloso Hey Felippe! Well, a lot of guys use it and I haven’t heard any complaints, ha! But honestly, yes, it’s a great fish catcher. I’ve heard from guys out West and down South using both styles. Give it a try on several streams. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Jesse makes me mad that I forgot the Broadhead stays cold! Got to look at my calendar. Thanks for another great one!
Douglas Randall Yo ho Doug! Yeppir, not a bad drive from Philly either. Hope you get a chance to get out soon. Thanks for watching and commenting and all your support.
Hi Scott! Thinking of trying the brodhead between Christmas and New Years. It looks low according to usgs. Any idea if it is fishing ok?
Hi Jeff! I would concentrate from the upper ball fields up to the Moose Lodge road, that’s where I heard they put in a lot of the Fall stockies, but my buddy was up there about a month ago and didn’t do very good, so I really don’t know. Maybe the day he went was just an off day. Good luck and have fun!
Start at Creek View Park off Powerhouse Lane and work up to the next road Mill Creek Rd. almost a mile.
A very educational video much-appreciated down-under in NZ. Do you have fly tying videos to supplement my skill and knowledge in this arena? Thanks for a very pleasurable watch.
John shand Hello John! Nice to hear from you. Well, if you go back through all my videos I do have two tying videos, they’re both around November and December, one in 2017 and the other in 2018. They each cover several patterns. Glad you’re enjoying the videos. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
I KNEW there had to be a fish in that riffle at 26:00. I usually walk past with with just a cursory cast. Tough to get a drag free drift at the head of that deep pool
Richard Stanton Ha Ha Rich! You know it! Never, never pass up a likely looking spot without at least even one cast, you never know! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey. Question for you. yesterday I fished the Brodhead and while it had great flow and clear water, no one was catching fish. Me most of all. Zero. Actually no one caught any that we ran into. Is it always this hard in early January? I tired two Brodhead spots. South of Mill Creek Road Bridge and up to the Brodhead Creek Heritage Center.
Any Eastern PA streams fishing well that aren't TOOOO far from NYC? I'll be back in spring and summer for sure but curious about winter.
Hi Josh! Someone mentioned doing poorly on the Brodhead the other day, so I checked the gauge at Anolomink, it showed the water temp dropped 4 degrees in one day, that’s super huge! Plus the flow that day was at 200cfs, that’s really high!
You gotta wait on any stream in the Winter if it drops a degree or more for the water temps to stabilize at least 2-3 days and for flows to be around normal, for the Brodhead is 90-120cfs. So really before you travel to any stream check the closest usgs gauge. Off hand I haven’t heard about many other eastern PA streams, maybe check out the Bushkill between Tamany and Easton.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 thanks. super helpful. Do the trout move to new, warmer locations, when the temps drop or just stay put and not feed?
@@JoshEthanJohnson Yep, they stay put and just shut down, after temps stabilize a couple days they’ll start resuming their usual feeding habits.
I notice you do not wet your hands before you handle the fish? We are encouraged-to wet our hands before handling, and here in N California because of the delicate film trout have on their bodies. Just curious. Great video, enjoyed your enthusiasm too. Thanks
Henry Sandigo Hi Henry! Thanks for the reminder. Glad you enjoyed it, appreciate you watching and commenting.
Hey Scott, the Broadhead was at one time probably the best ISO stream in the state. The last really big flood they had, probably 25 years ago, almost totally wiped them out. They did a stream survey and only found a couple. I'm glad to see they've come back at least a little.
rrranrom Hello! Well, that makes a lot of sense. I guess what it lacks in Isonychias it makes up for with stoneflies, so many! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Like your videos
Nice outing Scott. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try a small spinner next time I see risers but nothing coming off.
Michael Capurso You betcha Mike! I’ve been using the spinner more and more this year with great results, definitely give it a try. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yo Scott. Glad you got into some dry fly action. I usually catch the biggest fish of the day when I am about to leave but notice risers and do the "one last cast" in the pool nearest to my car.
Wondering how the fish will behave tomorrow morning when it is 36 degrees. I'm still trying to learn to drift nymphs like you.
Thanks for taking us to Brodhead...
Sung Kim Hey Sung! Isn’t it great, nice cold temps, if we can’t get more water , at least the water we have will be getting cooler. Keep practicing buddy, one day hopefully we’ll bump into each other and I can show you in person. Maybe one day, I’m thinking about doing an on stream demonstration, gotta think more about that how to conduct that. Stay tune. Thanks for watching and commenting and all your support.
Nice video my friend! Love how you keep cycling through flies during the trip. You did quite well on this stream. I like the backdrop here. I wanted to swing by here not long ago, and came close, but ultimately went home. Keep up the excellent work and look forward to your net one!
Tight Lining MD Thank you Mike! Glad you enjoyed it. That area that I’m fishing is in the Army Corp of Engineers flood control basin, they did a real good job keeping the beauty of the stream and surrounding area, see a lot of passerby’s while your fishing, very nice conversations asking how your doing and what not, I like the socialization. A tough stream to wade on your ankles, mostly all big round river stones. Thanks for watching and all your support. Tight Lines Always!
My old eyes have Progressive Glasses now. What over glass Polarized glasses are you wearing and which one's do you like the best.
Thanks I can't just wear sunglasses anymore without prescription :(
Marc Telesha Hi Marc! I’m wearing Cacoons, a lot of fly shops or fly fishing retailers sell them, I have two pairs, one with dark amber lense for bright sunny conditions and one with a yellow lense for low light. They’re really the only pair I’ve stuck with, been using them for 15+ years. My only strong advice is you should try them on before purchasing, don’t use their online measuring directions, not accurate for comfort. But they are the best pair I’ve used for the most reasonable price, I think about $60. Thanks for watching and your question.
Wow!!! Great day on the water Scott considering how low that water was! Them rainbows fought great and to find water that’s 58 degrees is amazing this time of year! Is the broad head considered a tailwater or has it just been pretty cold up there as of lately? That’s awesome water temp!!! Them little rusty spinners work great!!! Need to get better at throwing smaller dries, only dries I like to throw currently are big stimulators since they’re significantly easier to throw hahaha, this fall once I’m off for my winter break we’ll have to link up again. Keep the great videos coming and tight lines as always buddy!🎣💦
Osny Fishing Adventures Hey Owen! Thank you! Actually a smaller fly is much easier to cast, it weighs less, but harder to see and follow on the water. No, the Brodhead is a freestone stream but it’s in the Pocono mountain range, pretty cool water and feeders and yes it has been having some colder nights in the 40s. Contact ahead of your off days and we’ll plan something. Thanks for watching and all your support.
PA WOODS N WATER no probs as always buddy and will do!👊🎣💦
Spent many a hour on the Broadhead. Went to East Stroudsburg and we went down after classes.
Question; What's an ISO?
Me too on all fronts. Used to love fishing that when I attended ESU.
Bee Bob Hi Bob! Nice to hear from you. The Isonychia is a mayfly, also called a Slate Drake, usually starts showing up around June and lasts until the end of October, big bugs, size 10-12.
We fish this every year, nice bows and browns.......great vid
Dave Lester Hi Dave! Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you get a chance to fish it again soon. Some streams ARE getting a Fall stocking, hope the Brodhead is one of them. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Boy Scott,
That top water action looked to be a whole lot of fun with the spinners!
As always, stay safe and keep those lines tight.
Michael Strunk Yo Mike! Thank you very much. You know me, I like all types of flyfishing, but I love catching them on top, so much fun! Thanks for watching and commenting.
PA WOODS N WATER
You’re welcome Scott!
Hitting the Little Lehigh in just a few minutes.
Michael Strunk Go get ‘em Mike! Have fun! Last time I fished it about two months ago I caught some monster stocked brookies. Also saw a blue heron catch a 16-17” trout and couldn’t swallow it, it was to big, so he left it dead on the bank 😡. Hope you get into them.
Wow Scott. Three weeks and no videos. I was getting worried about you. Thought maybe you quit fishing. Yea right. lol I went crappy fishing and that's what I caught crap. lol Lots of rocks there. Awesome video as always.
George Naugle Hey George! Well, I was kind of preoccupied with a couple projects but never get rid of my fishing. I’ll be hunting now for a while, so flyfishing is taking a back seat until I get my deer 🦌. Thank you for your concern.
Love fishing the Brodhead! I currently go to ESU and the online classes give me plenty of time to fish :)
Sean Reedy Lucky you’re so close. Thank God the temps finally made it possible to fish safely. I don’t really know how the water was above Anolomink. Curious how the upper Brodhead is doing. Also wondering if the Brodhead will get a Fall stocking. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 No problem! Hoping for a fall stocking as well!
Scott. Good to see you on the Broadhead. Are you fishing the drys on a nymphing leader dry dropper leader
Dennis Chafin Hi Dennis! That’s the same nymphing leader I was using all day. All I did was cut off my tandem rig then tied on 3ft of 6x tippet to dry fly fish with, that easy. Thanks for watching and commenting.
When you nymph with no indicator or sighter, where are you focusing to detect a strike?
Richard Stanton Hi Rich! I focus on the belly of my line. To me, the line is always and ongoing adjusted with the depth and speed of the water, where as an indicator and sighter are for the most part stationary. I’ve used them in the past with success, but this way I feel in more contact with my rig, stationary indicators and sighters cannot adjust during the drift from let’s say 10” to 2ft sometimes in the same drift, and most guys don’t frequently adjust their indicators. I see so many guys get lazy with indicators leaving way too much slack line in the water often not getting a good hookset. Just my way, try it out, but in all techniques, you have got to keep you slack line down to a minimum. Thanks for your question.
Skinny water there right now. Great work. What was the water temp? Next up Bowhunting video?
Todd H Oh yeah, mostly skinny water. Temp was 58 degrees in the morning. Yep, hunting video up tomorrow.
I think you found that net last video you made there.
Jim Breslosky Yes Sir! You remember, good observation! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Lost my comment. I used to fish the Broadhead when I went to the college in town. What's an ISO?
You had a great day on the stream. Thanks for the video
Iso is short for Isonychia Pronounced I so nic E a it's the nymph of the Slate Drake aka Mahogany Dun.
Bee Bob Ha! Nope, I got you first comment, check the comment thread. The Isonychia is a big mayfly that lasts from June to October, also called a Bi-Color and Slate Drake.

at 17:28 is that the handle of some loon foreceps or a fidget spinner!!
Ben Bowman Ha! I didn’t see what you’re seeing, but on two fish I did use my Dr. Slick forceps to remove the hooks, silver with a gold finger loops handle. Thanks for watching.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 I should have added that they are in the water. Somebody dropped something!

Hello Scott. great show. The marvel of Pennsylvania. Brodheads Creek. I remember looking for it one day back in the 60's. There was no ditch as I recall, but it was entirely beautiful. I was a budding fly fisherman in those days and to the rejection of other methods I remain. Stay tight.
