- Rolling Stone recently took legendary horror rockers the Misfits shopping at Toy Tokyo in Manhattan to check out the shop's impressive stock of toys, statues and assorted memorabilia. The band members – who showed up in full costume! – also chatted about their long history and their latest album, The Devil's Rain. "Right now the band is 100 percent of our effort," says bassist Jerry Only. "I think this is our best work and our best lineup."

That awkward moment when Jerry Only technically isn't an original member. I chuckled when he commented about starting the Misfits. Diane DiPiazza was the first bassist when Glenn Danzig formed the Misfits. Jerry wasn't even in the picture yet for at least another year...

@@octapulse In 2017, Darkride Films Interview original drummer Manny Martinez said that from what he remembers, there was no Diane Dipiazza or Jimi Battle in the band. Before The Misfits, Mr. Jim, Diane, and Jimi played in a band with Glenn doing covers, but the original Misfits were Glenn Danzig, Manny Martinez, and Franche Coma.

Him and Glenn basically did start the Misfits. Jerry also made their instruments in his fathers workshop, introduced Doyle to Glenn and helped teach him how to play. Without Jerry, the Misfits wouldn't have been the same.

The only reason he's doing any of this is for the money. It's why there were stupid things like Misfits lunchboxes and cover albums by brass bands when he had control. He said he would get back together with Danzig if Danzig accepted Christ or whatever. LOL. I think he means "Best Line up" as in how the band functions. There was always tension with Danzig and Graves. This line up just gets along better.
And by finest work I think he means that this has the most effort put into it.
I have to admit their last album is really great!

Dude that’s crazy about the mars attacks original cards he said about the specific one where the alien is shooting the dog. That’s the exact same one that freaked me out and completely turned me off as a kid too
legendary "Misfits" mr. Jerry Only is a really nice & cool guy to have a conversation with cuz he takes his time in answering ur questions! i met mr. Only @ a Chiller Theater Convention some years ago in New Jersey & we talked about the making of his new bass guitar that he designed & he expressed evry detailed about it! thx JERRY O!
Basically, all of the money that the current Misfits make, goes into what they do. They produce their own albums, put it out on their own label which they fund themselves, they pay for their own tours, make their own stage sets for the shows, design their own clothes, Jerry makes his own bass guitars, makes the add-ons for the drums and then helps design the shirts. Basically, they're one of the most DIY bands around, selling merch is hardly a crime, who doesn't do it?
There's nothing wrong with it at all. Although I'm kinda grateful they haven't sold coffins and condoms yet. Lolol

Current lineup the best? I'm not a hater of Jerry, and I'm fine with the lineup, but the Devil's Rain is not the best album, nor is this lineup the best.
The original line-up was the best, by far... Yet I'm not sure that it'd be good if they reunited. These days, I think Jerry is a better vocalist that Danzig - Glenn sort of sucks these days. Album-wise... I think its better than Static Age and the best they did since Walk Among Us.
Sometimes I wish they'd bring back Michael, he seems to kinda miss the band. Plus I just really liked that incarnation of the band

You know what? Perhaps Jerry doesn't have the most integrity of musicians out there, but he still busts his ass to keep the Misfits going. Sure as hell ain't the best lineup, but that possibility was erased when Danzig left and as far as I'm concerned, he's doing a great job of keeping their legacy going.
Though I must agree, all the merch is a bit much.
Only is trying to run his own business now- give the man some credit. Glenn is running his.

Graves is a FAR better singer than Jerry. Musically, "The Devil's Rain" was the 3rd era of the Misfits... It wasn't terrible and I've gotta give props to Jerry for keeping the Misfits going... And now Glenn, Jerry and Doyle are playing together again. If it weren't for Jerry keeping the Misfits name alive, we might not have had a reunion... Even Doyle and Glenn doing Misfits songs, was because of the brothers keeping it together. Bad blood between brothers? I've never heard of such a thing... That was sarcasm, of course... It's great to see them doing the Misfits again, even though it's kinda bittersweet, because, in my opinion, the Misfits were NEVER a festival headlining band... They were a punk band.... For people to enjoy in dingy, dirty rock clubs.... Like Harpo's, here in Detroit...

Only era isn't quite as innovative as past work, feels more like filler tracks with a few songs with potential to be 'good'. Either way, I still come back and listen to the music. Great stuff and I honestly believe Only still has that genuine spark. I hope he can make something good.

Hardly, his record label seems to be doing well, they don't have to pay many costs for their shows since he's their sole promoter, and his family are the technicians and roadies... If anything, Jerry is rollin in it right now, much like Glenn is with those Oujia boards he was selling online.

In punk, aswell as a lot of other genres, "the look" mattered, look at the Ramones, the Clash, the Pistols, the Damned etc, the Misfits weren't any different. It's not important, but it can be to some.
My basic point was that Jerry had a lot of influence over the band, and without it, they'd never have been the same. This is undeniable. Without Jerry, there'd have never been a Doyle.
I don't think Glenn had the Devilock back then, he had weird cropped hair.

Who says what the Misfits are about writing classic songs? If anything, thats more in line with what Jerry is about, Glenn was about technique and creating new sounds, hence the many reworkings of their original songs, like "She" and "Cough Cool."
Every band is about Merch, so is Glenn, have you not seen his online store? Merch is the only way most bands actually make any money, the Misfits fund their own albums, tours, merch and label, aswell as make their own stage sets and instruments.
Ok I get why people don’t like devil rain but honestly it was a good album better than project 1950 but Devil Rain is a top 5 album

Musically, it is better, not sure how you can deny that. As far as anything else goes, of course he's going to talk big about the current band, what do you expect him to say, "we're awful?"
It's all opinion on what you like and don't like, but in all fairness, it is better musically than it's ever been as far as production and actual playing ability goes, especially live.
Graves once said something like Jerry Only will always be Only Jerry. It's too bad.

To be honest it's nowhere near the Misfits best work OR lineup. But really what's wrong with it? Dez is an awesome guitar player, and more than qualified to be a backup vocalist, Jerry thrashes the bass and has a really cool voice (but he could use more punch). And Eric is a crazy drummer. The songs aren't bad either. They are more like narratives of classic horror films. So when you get right down to it, the band is fine. The problem is its NOT old Misfits, and butthurt fans can't let that go.

The fact of the matter is this: you seem to hold a grudge against Jerry for keeping the Misfits name alive, but if it weren't for him doing that then 96% of current Misfits "fans" wouldn't know shit about them.
You seem to hold Glenn in some divine regard, which is pretty funny, since he's just as much of a religious tool as Jerry is, haha. Both of them make their moolah by selling Misfits coffee cups and writing songs about mythical monsters. I like the music, regardless, do you?

Jerry's arrangements on 1950's clearly show that he does understand classic music, how it's played and constructed. I'm not sure if you even get what "classic" means. Clearly you reserve your admiration for the kinds of songs that wrestlers walk down the aisle to.

They do pretty well on tour from what I understand. Mostly kids that don't know about the lineup changes and go "YAH MISFITS" though. Going to the show just to say "I saw the Misfits".

In all honesty, Danzig's latest performances have been epic, and the new album is quality, so i'm not sure what you're talking about...
Glenn was never about writing classic songs, with the exception of "Cum Back," the songs he wrote developed technically and production-wise, so i'm not sure what you mean when you say "The Misfits aren't about being technical musically," because quite clearly, they were, the very reason Glenn left was because he was fed up with them "not being able to play," something he took seriously when he started Samhain.
How has Jerry tarnished anything? That is pure nonsense.
If they get along better just say so don't say it's the best lineup because it's not. And if you put the most effort into making the new album say so don't say it's the finest work because it's not. I don't even think Jerry believe's it's the Misfits best work or best lineup because neither is even close.
