Shins will always be one of my top indie bands. I agree that it is timeless music. Their chord progressions are generally genius, they use a lot of key changes in their songs. ANd mercer’s voice is beautiful. Pretty much everything about shins - breadth of music, lyrical style, vocal style, chord changes, even the lead dubs are great. Good band. More peeps need to dive deep into Shins catalog. They have so many good songs.
the people that understand their genius will understand, the rest can go to hell :)) nah jk, but ive tried getting people into the shins and trying to get them to understand but some people just dont get it
@@sasushi It really is. I remember watching this in sixth grade in 2006/2007 in my old childhood room, thinking that it was so cool to see them record on what looked like a webcam. Its so nostalgic to keep coming back to it.
@@Guyote_ Wow .. nice. I got also nostalgic feelings. I remember finding this video in a forum just before the high school exams and posting it on youtube with some crappy video converter. The converter and the PC are long gone. But the video is still there. Best decision!
These are some of the most profound and genius lyrics ever..... Give it some time to sink in. Man awesome. Wow, now this is my double rainbow! It took me all of a year To put the poison pill to your ear But now I stand on honest ground, on honest ground You want to fight for this love But honey you cannot wrestle a dove So baby it's clear
I am in awe and want to say something but don't know what. As amadrienia said "Pure talent". I don't know how better to say it. I was just introduced to the Shins about 30 minutes ago and I CANNOT get enough. (I know, late bloomer ;-))
love this song, love the twangy country song in the beginning of the album version. these guys have the coolest lyrics of any band in a long long time. anyone ever notice they use "fatal flaw" in a bunch of their songs?
I was introduced to The Shins about a week ago and am wondering what took me so long. Maybe I'm just too old (39) to stay up-to-date with what's going on in music. But damn! I should have been paying attention to this. Within a couple of days of first hearing them, I bought all their CDs. Trying to catch up! Who else am I missing out on!!?
I've listened to the line many times and I'm almost certain he's saying "and stop barking around" but I could be wrong. Not really one for profanity in my music but if that's what Mercer sounds like when he says fuck then he must truly be an angel.
I realize your comment is 3 months old. But just letting you know, this is the "alternate version", off the "So Says I" EP, which I am pleasantly surprised to find as video footage here.
Something endearing about seeing Jesse… that original lineup of sorts with Marty and Dave…. That’s the shins. Kids from Albuquerque. I know James is the poet but…
Cool friggin' band. I like the combo of the drum and the accoustic guitar, and sounds as if some actual lyrics, not just dummy choruses. Good to go, Shins! Interesting name for the band, too.
It's from their album Chutes Too Narrow. The songs aka "A Call To Apathy", which might be why you can't find it. You should buy that album though, it's majorly awesome.
it's not a matter of skill really, it's a matter of style and the sound that you want to achieve. there is some great country music out there, but not the type of stuff you'd frequently hear on the radio
I like how he says "fucking around" instead of floating around. I heard ben gibbard say that too when he covered it. can anyone make out what he says at the end?
People should be happy if indie bands get popular! That means more people are actually listening to good music, not all the crap that most people listen to right now. It's a GOOD thing:) Does music have to be exclusive to be good? Don't be so prideful in claiming that you knew a band before everyone else, does it matter?
The first copy I got of this track was burned from a friend's and her original had this version, I played the burned CD so many times it broke in half, I then bought the album and it had the wonky western version on it. I was highly disappointed since it's my favorite on the CD. Did only so many copies of the album have this version?
"You wanna jump and dance but you sat on your hands and lost your only chance"
Sums up my entire life.
Yeah pretty much fml
"I find a fatal flaw in the logic of love", one of the greatest lines in music´s history.
That "échale!!" makes me smile EVERYTIME!!!
The shins are such an underrated band
Seriously
word
True!
James Mercer is a legend.
His voice is so pure...
One of my life goals is to shake this man's hand.

I've been watching this video every year for the past 14 years lol...
No wonder, such a great song!

@@sasushi Who would have thought that such a little thing would have such a big impact on some people.

@Ian Welchel lucky 3 is the best thing that’s happened to humanity
I could seriously listen to this song on repeat for the rest of my life.
I loove his voice.
I swear I've been listening to these guys forever and just noticed they remind me of The Kinks. SMDH Love both!
I almost forgot to watch this today.
I am in awe and want to say something but don't know what. As amadrienia said "Pure talent". I don't know how better to say it. I was just introduced to the Shins about 30 minutes ago and I CANNOT get enough. (I know, late bloomer ;-))
this is the best version of this song I have ever heard. shins... you are melting me in a puddle
anyone else watching guitar right hand and drummer right hand and the shadow in the back go up and down perfect to the beat... beauty.
For sure the best version. What a voice that guy has.
found this song, this exact audio, from my cheap android's radio station.
thanks 80 dollar phone, now i have a new favorite song.
they are highly missed and this song makes me smile..........
My favourite Shins song.
Such a simple song, and yet it's completely awesome.
This is the original audio for the "alternate version" of this song i love it!
Oh how much I love this one 😍
love this song, love the twangy country song in the beginning of the album version. these guys have the coolest lyrics of any band in a long long time. anyone ever notice they use "fatal flaw" in a bunch of their songs?
this is a cool version, been listening to it once a day

I agree, their acoustic version(s) of this song are always sweet
its also a favorite of ours to warm up to in da band lol
This is version is so much better than the album version it's crazy
Whoa they sell the exact recording of this on iTunes!! This is a good song indeed
i like this version best
So much better than the album version.
Still an excellent song; oh the writing and sentiment!
I've listened to the line many times and I'm almost certain he's saying "and stop barking around" but I could be wrong. Not really one for profanity in my music but if that's what Mercer sounds like when he says fuck then he must truly be an angel.
What a good band! And the lead singer sound a lot like Brandon Flowers
I just keep coming back. My Nr. 1.
This version of this song is probably my favorite Shins song ever since I bought the So Says I single.
freakin awesome! listening to the decemberists on pandora and this came up. absolutely love it
my absolute favorite.
Love this song! Like a 70s Stones country rocker mixed with Iron and Wine...
I love The Shins.. I love The Weakerthans = I couldn't possibly choose favorites
You don’t know nothing about music if don’t hear the sadness in this easy tune
Ah, the wonderfulness of the Shins~ I love them~
Pure talent. Love it
amazing live, amazing
Great song and live version
I wish I could sing like that
Great song. Wish there were more versions of it on RUclips.
I love the white boy saying "échale!"!!! Priceless!!!
Everytime I listen to this song, it gets better and better, thus my head-bobbing gets stronger and stronger. Wierd, how that goes.
Love it. Love it lots...
the shins keep me alive
I must see them live at least one time before I die.
AMEN
this mihgt be my favorite song by the shins
Beautiful :)
I realize your comment is 3 months old. But just letting you know, this is the "alternate version", off the "So Says I" EP, which I am pleasantly surprised to find as video footage here.
Reminds me of the old Shins/Flake Music HQ in Albuquerque.
the shins are the bomb in phantoms
mmmm beautiful stuff
I love the Shins
the "twangy" sound on album you are referring to would be slide guitar and yes i agree it sounds awesome.
Very good song.
shout out to Jesse, THE original and quintessential Shins drummer
Something endearing about seeing Jesse… that original lineup of sorts with Marty and Dave…. That’s the shins. Kids from Albuquerque.
I know James is the poet but…
That country key change.
his voice is different in this video but i love it !
This is brilliant. You're voice is so refreshing.
love it love it love
xoxoxoxo
These guys rule!
great lyricist
Cool friggin' band. I like the combo of the drum and the accoustic guitar, and sounds as if some actual lyrics, not just dummy choruses. Good to go, Shins! Interesting name for the band, too.
hi dad!!! (if u see this) :)))
awesome

The Shins are the most underrated band there is
just good music
"Echale!!!!!"
yea
Neil deGrasse Tyson doing quite well on the drum set.
Funniest comment I've read in a while.
Of course they are.
The album version is "And stop floating around"
But it seems whenever they do it live, James says "And stop fucking around"?
Yep
it's not a matter of skill really, it's a matter of style and the sound that you want to achieve.
there is some great country music out there, but not the type of stuff you'd frequently hear on the radio
I like how he says "fucking around" instead of floating around. I heard ben gibbard say that too when he covered it. can anyone make out what he says at the end?
yeah that are the such great bands!
I'm gonna see radiohead and sigur ros soon:D
you can BUY it on itunes
I keep coming back here for Jesse's grito.

i heardd this song on pandora radio but i cant fins it anywhere to download.
Covering this song is easy! On guitar, but hitting those notes with my voice is gonna b rough man.
Definitely. For most men, those notes are going to be right in the passagio (area of vocal range where you will crack).
It used to be easy for me but I was just struggling lol. Too many cigarettes and whiskey drinks I guess
half-step down ftw!
I disagree, I kind of like the fact that they are underrated. Then I get to show all my friends and amaze them on what they are missing out on :D
2:28 - "and stop f**king around". that's what it sounds like, it's cute.
@APairofBoots Best youtube comment ever!
@dntwryaboutthegov
you got that right
the sun isnt too clear?

I believe it's the Alt version found on So Says I the mini album. You can find it on spotify:)
Someone figure out what he says right at the end please! It really hinders my ability to sing along to this song.
@OttoEdrick yep its half step
What does he say at the end?
It doesn't look like it on the video, but I agree that it sounds like its down a bit.
