आत्मकल्याण और आत्मोत्थान के लिये अनेक प्रकार की साधनाओं का आश्रय लिया जाता ‘स्वाध्याय’ में चित्त लगाने से सन्मार्ग की ओर रुचि होती है। ‘सत्संग’ से स्वभाव और संस्कार शुद्ध बनते हैं। ‘पूजा- उपासना’ से आस्तिक भावना और ईश्वर विश्वास की भावना उत्पन्न होती है। इस प्रकार भिन्न- भिन्न उद्देश्यों और परिस्थितियों को दृष्टिगोचर रखकर ऋषियों ने अनेक प्रकार की साधनाओं का उपदेश दिया है, पर इनमें सर्वोपरि ‘तप’ की साधना ही है। तप की अग्रि से आत्मा के मल- विक्षेप और पाप- ताप बहुत शीघ्र भस्म हो जाते हैं और आत्मा में एक अपूर्व शक्ति का आविर्भाव होता है। गायत्री- उपासना सर्वश्रेष्ठ तपश्चर्या है। इसके फलस्वरूप साधक को जो दैवी शक्ति प्राप्त होती है, उससे सच्चा आत्मिक आनन्द प्राप्त करके उच्च से उच्च भौतिक और आध्यात्मिक लक्ष्य को वह प्राप्त कर सकता है।
For self-welfare and self-upliftment, many types of spiritual practices are taken, by putting the mind in 'Swadhyaya', there is interest towards the right path. Nature and sanskars become pure through 'satsang'. Theistic feeling and the feeling of God belief arise from 'worship-worship'. In this way, keeping in view the different objectives and circumstances, the sages have preached many types of sadhnas, but the most important of them is the practice of 'tapas'.
