  • The air watchtower near Montfort (1953) was part of a nationwide network of 138 observation towers. They served as a detection and warning system against low-flying Soviet aircraft during the Cold War. Used until 1964, Montfort was the only tower to have spotted a Soviet aircraft.
In 1958, observers on the Linne air watchtower near Montfort in Limburg spotted an Ilyushin that had taken part in a French air show and had deliberately deviated from course on its way back to the Soviet Union to photograph a piece of border area.
After reporting it to the German air force, it forced the Ilyushin to land at Düsseldorf airport.
