Can someone please explain to me why Romania - a force and world class team in handball , winning gold medals left and right during the 1960s , 1970s , 1980s - basically has been completely absent for almost three consecutive decades (since 1997) in major tournaments ( IOC , IHF , EHF ) until this Euro 2024 ( with unremarkable exceptions in IHF WC 2009 & 2011 ) *???*
In all of world team sports this must be kind of unique.
Does it have to do with Ceaușescu and the brutality / aftermath of his regime?
The large exodus of people out of Romania since the fall of the Iron Curtain?
    Really curious!
    All the best from Germany!
P.S. Feel like Romania should have played in yellow today!

because nobody here invested in handball ,(except maybe women's handball), every government after 1990 until now ,don't help sport at all ,all disciplines are on their own ...so , no money for sport , zero interest from all governments , no matter their policy ,left or right... they don't care....
remember Romania as communist country ? Ceausescu supported sport in all disciplines , because sport was the policy of the state !!!
Romania women's gymnastics (olympics, world and european champions , gold medals everywhere ,train wagons of gold ,silver or bronze medals ,starting with Nadia Comaneci ... no.1 sport in Romania at the time
Football: Steaua Bucharest , european champion in 1986 (2-0 vs FC Barcelona in that final)
      Handball - men's handball - 4 times world champions.
plus other sport disciplines where Romania had trophees everywhere...
after 1990 ... sport is not a thing for our politicians at all , they don't care!!!

They qualified for the World Champs some times, but for the Euro there was a limited number of spots. Now it was increased. It's not because of investments, they mainly run well through sports schools and some academies, but the issue is with the lack of practionners in men's handball. And it's also decreasing in women. Romanians are talented, but when you don't have kids playing several sports, results are absent! In the sports where there are registered players, results exist, although not big. Because guess what, Romanians' No 1 sport now is fitness! Nothing more, else, maybe just bike and amateurish...

How can they focus on sports when their parents are focused on gathering more amounts of money, and the kids are navigating on tablet from age 3-4? They simply have different objective. I would oblige them through schools to sport..

      @@dand7763 thx for your comment ! 👍
Yeah i know Comaneci and her story and the glory team with Legend Hagi beating Barcelona with Schuster.
( btw probably the reason for the crooks at UEFA starting the Champions League and making it super difficult for Non-Western teams to win after 1993 )
Still I wonder, if you look at former Yugoslav countries like Serbia , Croatia & Slovenia ( & even Montenegro ) - the sport obsession is still there long after the collapse and civil wars of Yugoslavia.
Maybe it also has to do with clubs like Red Star , Partizan , Dinamo Zagreb having better presidents in charge than what happened to Steaua .
It is still a mystery to me.
Dinamo Bucharest however seems to be at least still an active multi-sports club , also competing in Handball.

Yeah, not having kids at all and giving kids screens too early is probably a problem we here in Germany know all to well about.
Another issue here in our overcrowded cities is the lack of multi-sport training grounds for the youth.
The few indoor sports halls are tightly booked and fought over by youth teams from Handball , Basketball , Volleyball ( , hopefully Futsal in the future as well, although its not looking good ).
Probably things all across Europe and North America and developed Asian countries.
The ongoing neverending influx of third worlders since 10 years (but also long before that) also doesn't help. ☹
Anyway , just thought there might be a big publlic discussion inside Romania about the national Handball team's performance , given its prestigious history.
For the last 24 years i followed Handball loosely and always thought , "man, imagine the Romanians being back at the top and fighting the French & Danes & Swedes & Spaniards & Croatians for Top Spot!"
Anyway , even our team is far away from the glory days of 2002 , 2003 , 2004 .
Would be surprised if they make it to the Semis.
Best of luck to Romania and Romanian fans in the future ! 👍✌🤙
