Would love to see "rail" blocks that maybe fit with special rail ammo. If they could have some type of magnetic element to it that released automatically once the ammo made it to the designated end piece, that would prevent having to use the plows. That, plus high tensile strength cables or ropes meant to launch with it. Pie in the sky after all of that would be an ammo magazine that has a mechanism to drop more ammo into the rail after you pull back the firing mechanism again. Then it would potentially be an instrument you could use to complete high precision, target practice type missions.
A ball sitting on the edge of the tube, use the connector Block to just smack it through the tube "or guide" also, you could maybe do less strength than 3 for the bungies and multi connect them, maybe they won't shake! Awesome content as always
Developer: Drae, I will add a creation of yours to the game for the people to use. Drae: I have a mobile crossbow or a spinning rocket that has 49 cannons on it. Oh and it costs $258k.
Hey Drae, I really like the ballista build! The idea with the plows as guide rails is great, but what about putting a bomb or other kind of ball in as the projectile instead of a spike? Historical ballistas also shot ball projectiles.
3:35 I believe this is due to something called the ground effect, after a certain altitude the thrusters Dan no longer push against the dense ground and instead push against the thinner air leading to less thrust (but please do correct me if I'm wrong)
Thrusters don't push against something, otherwise spacecraft couldn't move. Thrusters work by throwing their exhaust out, so as long as the exhaust is capable of leaving the craft, the Thrusters will work
Drae, next time you try to edit the ballista, maybe lower the strength of the ropes. Sure, you want a lot of resistance, but if you have too much (as we clearly saw) it doesn’t expand, so try 2.0 strength rather than 3.
i feel like you have the right idea of tensioning the elastics, but the pistons make it so the point where the bow string is straight and releases the ammo is farther down the rail. perhaps instead, have the bow arms pivot or turn at the head and away from each other? like if you tied a string between two fingers and then spread those fingers apart.
If you design it with a disconnected spike, that you drop into the firing tube, then you can make a magazine with spikes that you drop in, so you can reload. Modern problems, require modern solutions. *taps forehead* Also, you might be able to get more force, if you connect the cord onto a piston with another cord on it, so it's doubled up.
What you could've done is change the ballista so it works like a pool table. Place a projectile on a disconnector at the end of the barrel, then when you pull the trigger both it and the elastic detach. The weight gets smacked into the projectile and fwoosh, off it goes
Drae for the balista try 4 plows, 2 on top 2 on bottom to make a barrel and inside the barrel put the spike ball, Leave a gap in between top and bottom for the elastic bands to travel and use something to push the ball. Try giving that a try.
Try adding in elastics that pull more upwards. Like 2 more arms above the ones already there that also attach to it, that way when it fires, it touches nothing AND it will already have a 45 degree arch to the shot.
I imagine the ballista is a lot like a crossbow, in that the bow itself is set below the rail, and the string drags along the rail, the pressure down allows it to stay stable and thrust the projectile straight. The other part is the projectile would need to be longer than a spike, weight can decrease range but increase accuracy and ability to fly straight
I think that if you put the strings one up and the other down is more efficient that way. I never played the game, but looks like this is the best way to avoid friction with the connect point. (You can use a ball intead of an spike, and use the plow flat to create a barrel that mantain the ball in place, like a shotgun barrel)
I find that the thrusters seem to have an initial boost to lift the creation and then level out for it to not fly too far away, I doubt the dev really thought about making flying creations so exact during the time, so it wouldnt shock me if the thrusters are meant to come back down, because you're right, the atmosphere density causes the thrusters to either lose out on thrust (if its oxygen fed) and ofc if its solid fuel, it shouldnt have been affected(? i hate english) by the air density Also for the submission, you really sure he meant that or just a creation to put in and showcase what can be done? Cause drae, that weapon is absurd lol
You should just use two of the plow on the top. Make it like the legolas repeating crossbow. Without the repeating part. Just gives you a good way to line up the shot consistently. And if you set up the limbs like a compound bow you could be able to decrease the tension
The reason it went up and down is probably the thruster pushing on the ground is enough thrust to lift but once it gets into open air the extra thrust just isn’t there to push it up further
You don't need to create a rail for it if you use more arms with more ropes, and should allow for more error space for the rope jittering with the rail gone. Like a goal post with four rubber bands. Or have two sets of crossbow arms that open. Just as long as there's a box shape, and the cords are on the corners. Kind of the same theory with spinning around real fast in flight, you don't need to be accurate if you put equal and opposite force on it. And using something round for the projectile should also decrease snagging, in theory
I thought maybe plows as a guide, but instead of the cables permanently connected to the block with he point. Maybe build a bolt where the cables are connected by couplers. So it’ll be pulled back the same, but when it’s exiting release the cables from the whole center section and just use that as the projectile. So cable on coupler to center to release whole thing as a projectile-~+~- rather than cable on center and release just the end as a projectile -+-
Drae instead of the spike for the balista use the wrecking ball, and then disconnect it first once the bungee it taught, then fire it and the ball might slide along the plows being pushed by the bungee
Drae for the ballista, add 1 more rope to each side, it'll stabilize the stress on each rope, or what you could do is instead of using a spike use a ball as the projectile abs have it get pushed out
Add a counter-balance on the back of the launcher itself, and then having the disconnect on the back of the counter-balance might help keep the spike from dropping downward and hitting the machine
For the crossbow it might work better if you made it more of a slingshot than crossbow, with small arms so instead of pulling back and sideways it’s just back, it might prevent elastic wiggle but idk
I remember when I was younger. There were these kids we would hangout with and they had this awesome toy that you could build from different parts just like in this game.
It looks like the spike always points down and its the machine when being launched. Maybe add a counter weight to the 4 way connector the spike is attached to? That way it will be less likely to rotate up or down.

yeah if I'm the dev I'd love to add the balista but that bomber is.....
probably

the thing is he picked rope not bungie
at first he was testing bungie but when he made it he clicked rope

Id say instead that the higher the altitude the less thrust you get, would be simple to code as well.
Is this something that also happens IRL or is it just in games?
Thrusters don't push against something, otherwise spacecraft couldn't move.
Thrusters work by throwing their exhaust out, so as long as the exhaust is capable of leaving the craft, the Thrusters will work
The only way thrusters would be less powerful the higher you are, is if they need air to burn their fuel (ie, a jet engine)

I think you should use the spike ball as a projectile, it does more damage.
I could literally watch you build random shit for hours , need longer videos when it comes to this stuff!!
for the ballista try attaching the bungie rope to solid blocks rather then pistons
I think if you make the thing in the middle a bit longer your ballista would work, since the tail of it would make it stay straight
Love this game!
It looks like a excavator, a battleship, a rocket, and a tornado had an orgy in the middle of an hurricane!
The reason it went up and down is probably the thruster pushing on the ground is enough thrust to lift but once it gets into open air the extra thrust just isn’t there to push it up further

For the projectile of the ballista try the wrecking ball. I know it's gonna be heavy but you may get it to work with maybe two cords on each side
Ok the cross bow is a good Idea I would like that in the game.
Drae instead of the spike for the balista use the wrecking ball, and then disconnect it first once the bungee it taught, then fire it and the ball might slide along the plows being pushed by the bungee
If you made the "bolt" longer it would fly more straight and stop wobbling to much 😁
A slingshot design makes more sense in this situation it’s be easier to make
Drae for the ballista, add 1 more rope to each side, it'll stabilize the stress on each rope, or what you could do is instead of using a spike use a ball as the projectile abs have it get pushed out
Also Drae... try a longer Ballista Bolt... like that it will be more guided and not tumble around
There's a reason crossbow bolts aren't an inch long. Also those elastics need to be programmed with some kind of damping.
Add a counter-balance on the back of the launcher itself, and then having the disconnect on the back of the counter-balance might help keep the spike from dropping downward and hitting the machine
Hilarious😂 please continue playing this game!
Good to see another video of SCRAP MECHANIC, youtube game identifier.
Drea, please try and build a trebuchet, it would be awesome
It is a flaming twister wow
Maybe try adding more cables to improve the pull back strength
For the crossbow it might work better if you made it more of a slingshot than crossbow, with small arms so instead of pulling back and sideways it’s just back, it might prevent elastic wiggle but idk
3:40 This is quite right, sounds like they put the "ground effect" in
Should call your Vehicle first Flaming tornado bomb?
If you disconect the Bolt (if it was bigger) and have it being pulled by a plow or block connected to the strings it could work

I miss the besiege playthroughs you'd make 😭
I see a wrecking ball, the ballista might work better as a ball launcher instead of an arrow launcher with the current game physics.
There does be a hook you can hook 1 bunjie and pull it back and it wont be super wonky.
Use pistons to launch stuff instead of elastic bands.

Promising start to the video, then that "projectile launcher" thing happened.
It looks like the spike always points down and its the machine when being launched. Maybe add a counter weight to the 4 way connector the spike is attached to? That way it will be less likely to rotate up or down.
