Emily has always been one of my favs. She grooves so hard and really embodies the idea of mixing blues and jazz. No endless streams of 8th notes, but better yet, melodic groovy improv. I hadn’t transcribed these licks before or thought much about them like you broke down. I’ll have to work on it. Thanks, man.

Thanks for your comment, Andre! This solo is a great example of some great melodic playing and motifs, mixed in with some burning lines! 🤘

She's my favorite! Her composition is every bit as good as her standard versions.

Such a great choice, deserves to be remembered and looked upon, still shines, an early gone diamond.

I had the fortune of seeing Emily around 1980. I was at a very small jazz bar in W.Paterson, NJ watching Herb Ellis play when in walked Emily with two dudes. She was wearing overalls and carrying a guitar case. Herb Ellis calls her up to the stage area to play and she totally blew the place away. She was amazing. Saw her about 5 years later in Norfolk, VA and she had so-upped her playing. She was fantastic. Great talent, so sad that she died very young.

Thankfully not forgotten by everyone. She was a great player and, something which is rare among the greats, a very effective teacher. Her dsicussion of resolving and non-resolving dominants - which used to be on youtube - was a real eye-opener.

Nice video, and I loooove Emily Remler. I have a technique question. I understand that you can play faster with the hybrid pull-off/thumb pattern. But to me that sounds like a flurry of triplets because the accent is always on the same note -- the first note of the three.
Generally, I think what makes playing an pattern with an odd number of notes over an even number of "beats" really effective is that it can move the accented beat in a way that's pleasing to the ear. If you did the three note pattern with alternating picking and just naturally accented the first note of the four beats, the accent would move from the first note to the second to the third and then start over: *1* 2 3 1 *2* 3 1 2 *3* 1 2 3 *1* ...
It's the principle behind doing rolls on the banjo. Of course in this case it would mess up the pull-off when the second note is the one being accented. Anyway, just a thought. Appreciate your channel.

I wonder if she did this as kind of a reverse Pat Martino. He did ascending three note lines and I understand she was influenced by him. For me, I’d like to learn how to hybrid pick, so practicing one of these three note ideas might be a good exercise.

Ok. I tend to keep the backing track low so people can focus on the thing I’m playing 👍
