  • Track 7 From The 1985 Concord Jazz
"Larry Coryell And Emily Remler Together" Album
Recorded At Cost Recorders, San Francisco, CA, August 1985.
Larry Coryell plays a Gibson Super 400 Electric (circa 1967) and an Ovation Adamas Acoustic Guitar.
Emily Remler plays a Boris Electric and an Ovation Adamas Acoustic Guitar. Both play Acoustic Guitars on Arubian Nights and Six Beats, Six Strings and Electric Guitars on all other selections.
"...There is a genuine bond between the two quite dissimilar guitarists. They share an empathy...and an instinctive understanding of this fragile format, and both are qualities that mark those jazz worth remembering."
    Neil Tesser

Emily took the octave style and really made it her own signature expression.Ive been thinking of Emily alot today.

@@davidfischer196 I knew it the first time I saw the picture! And this is because of your great work capturing that energy. It was never publicized and all I knew is that Larry divorced from his wife the year after and that lightened a bulb in my head. Saw them play together in 85 and it was amazing...Larry confirmed directly to me in 92 the death of Emily and it was sad.

I had a very funny encounter with Emily in 1977, long before I had any idea who she was or would become. I was at Flo's Records in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, and a guy, a fellow jazz freak I had never met was binging on "Bright Size Life" and how incredible Pat Methenty was and what a big jazz star he was destined to be. All of a sudden, this not unattractive but intense and self-possessed young woman sided up to us and started talking. We had been talking about what a hotbed of talent Boston and Berklee was becoming for guitarists, with Mick Goodrick and John Abercrombie and others tearing it up, and she said she had gone to Berklee and was a jazz guitar player herself and she knew Methany and he was "good"...and she started to feel frustrated that our attitude was oh...that's nice...you play jazz guitar...funny. If there was a guitar on hand I am sure she would have quickly put us in our mildly chauvinistic places. Strange how life is!

Saw them together August 31 1985 at the Rising Sun in Montreal. I will never forget that night and was sitting pretty close at the first tables. Emily was stunning, dressed in green with leather boots .My friend recorded the show on his new Sony Walkman and I still have the recording. The sound was clean and right in your face with Fender twin reverb amps (Larry was also using the TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Pitch Modulator & Flanger pedal that you can clearly hear in this track) and the music was intense and exciting. I saw hundreds of concerts and this is in my top ten for sure. Had the opportunity to talk to Emily between the sets and she was nice. Larry did so many duets with other guitar players and my 2 favourites are the one with Philip Catherine and this one...a perfect balance between technique, emotion and feel...and lot of swing too. Larry once said that Emily's time feel was one of the best among the musicians he had played with and he played with hundreds of them. Every time I met Larry he was nice too and saw him on the street in 1992 at the Jazz fest (he witnessed the concert by Boulou & Elios Ferré) and asked him about the rumor that Emily was dead (no internet then) and he confirmed to me that she died from overdose and was sad to hear that. R.I.P. Emily and Larry, two masters of their art.

Wow!, she has the Wes Montgomery sound down pat. Those opening phrases using
his octave style really sets this great guitar duet apart like no other.
Close your eyes and it's almost like hearing Wes there, but Emily is doing more unique improvisation in her solo that characterizes her signature sound.

I heard many versions of "How Insensitive" from different artists, when I first heard of Emily and Larry's version, I was deeply impressed by two guitarists complimented each others work, not just that, Emily's playing expressed the most sadness and frustration of the meaning of this tune . This tune is included in my top 50 must heard Jazz tunes and I don't get tired of hearing it over and over again. Now they both are gone, leaving this tune to be a timeless piece of art work - 8 minutes long.
