I've played it utilizing the first position G chords and you're right it rings too hard when you're cranking out the lower strings.
Utilizing what I call the F position slide up to the G and the third fret definitely with only the four strings makes the verse & intro sound much better. Great one Jon

Don't do the f add 9 but try f major 7th by playing an f chord with e string open rather than 3rd fret
Also when you play those first 2 chords fret the low e string with your thumb.
Also keep the a string muted like you play
