- Here's David Gilmour's solo from "Have A Cigar", painstakingly transcribed note for note by yours truly. I did my best to recreate all the details of the original recording; paying special attention to tone, feel, phrasing, vibrato, and articulation. For this demo I used a Wildwood Edition ’54 “Thin Skin” Fender Stratocaster that is 100% stock. Some sources state that David used an MXR Phase 90 for this recording, but I felt I was able to get closer using a Sweetsound Ultra Vibe 2, which is an outstanding Univibe clone. For the amp, I used a Strymon Iridium on the Marshall Plexi setting, which was pretty close to the Hiwatt that was likely used on the original recording. David probably used a fuzz pedal on the record, but I did not have one that sounded correct, so the overdrive that you hear is from the Strymon alone. Everything was recorded directly to Garageband where I added some reverb in the box. No additional EQ was used, other than slightly cutting the mids and boosting the highs on the Iridium. Guitar volume was on 10 and the tone was on about 7. I found the excellent backing track on guitarbackingtrack.com, but unfortunately I don’t have the creator’s name. If you are the creator, please comment below so I can give proper credit here.
Listening to David's playing is like taking a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. It's majestic, it's beautiful and most of all... it's HUGE. What an amazing player! In my humble opinion, Gilmour bridges the gap from the blues based psychedelic guitarists of the late 60s to the more contemporary “arena rock” players of the late 70s/early 80s. But more importantly, David has the rare ability to express an incredible range of emotion using only a few notes. Very few musicians posses this skill (BB King, Miles Davis, Little Walter and Stan Getz come to mind.) Gilmour's tone is utter perfection and it represents the sonic possibilities of the Fender Stratocaster when paired with a great amp like the Hiwatt 100w. Yet David could have probably coaxed amazing tone from any rig that he chose, because he knew the importance of controlling the instrument with his fingers alone.
I love this solo for it’s simplicity. Gilmour has what I consider to be the prettiest vibrato in the business, and he uses it to great effect here. Probably my favorite moment is the “weeping” minor third bends at around the 1:22 mark. It’s remarkable stuff that any guitarist would be well served to study close. But really every note here is essential, trademark Floyd. So tune up those Stratocasters and start playing along. Listen closely, take it one note at a time, and you'll be "riding the gravy train" in no time! ~WW

Wow... perfect tone, phrasing, articulation etc etc etc.... well done!
nicely done man. Like you said, it is a simple solo, yet, the feel and David's tone makes it one of his best solos in my opinion. Good job!
I agree - that was a fantastic 'replication' of Gilmour! Skill and tone, the whole shebang. Thanks for doing it!!
I don't think I've ever heard an Iridium sound THAT good! Strymon needs you to demo them!
Excellent
great bending and vibrato!
Jarrod Cook thanks!
Awesome! Loved it!
Fuck yeah!
How is it possible that this guy plays Duane and Gilmore perfectly?
I do a pretty decent Clapton too. Stay tuned.
