I was in VF- 84 Jolly Rogers's at Oceana between 87 - 91 , on board the Theodore Roosevelt was in Desert Storm at end of my enlistment , at least they are still flying the skull & crossbones ! Carry on Squids ! !
@@redta93kwy 2 years late but VF-84 was unfortunately decommissioned along with other Tomcat squadrons due to budget cuts after the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. The Jolly Rogers lived on in VF-103 and now VFA-103.
yes. the 200 jet is the CAG plane, 201 has the squadron commanders name on it. but who flies what jet at any given time is purely up to the maintenance status and who's scheduled to fly. might go weeks without flying the one with your name on it.
@swoodard4 Just a friendly FYI, the F is the two seater, the E is the single. And if I remember correctly the E/A-18G has pods on the wings, so this is an F squadron.
Give it a few more years and you'll probably be a Super Hornet fan boy. At 1:04 the super hornet looks amazing. But I do agree the Tomcat looks better than the Super Hornet cause it's got nice curves;) I was a Tomcat fan boy too, fav squadron was VF-31 Tomcatters. Can you believe it they have VFA-31 Tomcatters on the Super Hornets, I don't even know how that's comprehensible.
nick azam Each squadron in the Airwing will have its '00' aircraft painted in Hi Vis. '00' a/c are flown by the squadron CO. The CAG and DCAG will also have a Hi Vis aircraft assigned. If the CAG is an F-18 Driver, he will take one of the F-18 '00' a/c and that squardon CO will be 01 and so on. The CAG can also be a an NFO in which case he will be the WSO in one of the squadron CO a/c that has 2 or more seats.
I hear yeah man! I am a Tomcat guy myself.......just didnt get the camera in time to prove it. But The tomcat spends way to much time on the ground after flights. Super Bug has the upper hand on that and its a New airframe. Tomcat really didnt stand a chance against it. I still think the navy should have kept the F-14 as a specific intercept bomber.
well if they would have built new D's they would have been just as new and have just the good up time as a new superbug has And they would have had the range the super bugs still don't have...
If Grumman was given the chance to introduce the ST-21 the Horny could eat the dust in the desert instead. Thanks to "mastermind" D.C. the Cat was killed and the Super-duper-Bug was chosen . BTW. The Tomcat B&Ds mad the life of the Bug very hard so good for the Hornet that the Cats is gone. TOMCATS 4 EVER!
@Kukkonaama well i think its because all the f-14 REO officers (back seat guys) were already trained to do that job plus with the rear seater watching radar/electronics/countermeasures the pilot can concentrate more on flying and killing the bad guys.
The colored vertical stabs belong to the CO. Same as you guys in the AF the wing commander will have his own special bird all prettied up. I dont know if they still do but they would also designate a pretty bird for CAG too.
Hmm, someone please tell me why they al are two seated? Is it because of ex tomcat pilots who got used to 2 seat, and the navigator or whateva is sitting in the back.
So what if I´m a Tomcat fanboy. For its time, it was the best the Navy could offer, and to think it could defeat recent generation planes, is almost unheard of. Super Hornet looks dull anyway! :P
oh yeh it is super hornet which is two seated, here in most of the hornets (55) are single seated, and the rest are two seated (62 total hornets). cant wait to join the air force
at least they gave the jollys the super hornet and kept them a 2 man crew.since they had to give up their tomcats.they should have been the only sqaudron to keep their cats and kick ass against all these assclowns f-14 long live vf-84-103.
@FutureMarine1775USA idk man, i never was a huge f-14 guy (maybe b/c i lived on an F-15C/E air force base for most of my childhood). But i do like the black and yellow F-18Fs
They got 2 weeks or less to spend with there family before getting redeployed and not seeing them again for the next couple of years or more if they don't come back dead!!!
Another Tomcat fanboy.......................the Tomcat wasn't that great of a plane. If you think about it, BVR missiles took over the Tomcats interceptor role. The Super Hornet is what WE need right now and in the future too.
great music. brings back memories of the 00s. great years when times were better.
God bless America!

I always wonder what happened to VF-84. They were on board the Nimitzs prior to homeport change to Bremerton. I was part of Nimitz ship company 84-87.

You can tell the black fin on the f18 is flown by the squadron leader.

I miss the days loading TARPs pods on the F-14B Tomcats of VF-103. The Rhino is a cool aircraft, but she'll never truly replace the fleet defender.
F/A-18F Rhino is coolest :) liked the tomcat best as VF-103 :)
@swoodard4 Just a friendly FYI, the F is the two seater, the E is the single. And if I remember correctly the E/A-18G has pods on the wings, so this is an F squadron.
I came back early on the deployment to catch these jet back in 2009.
God bless 'em!
Job well done!
I just got my orders from A school VFA - 103 I cant wait to see these guys up close! (AM HINTON)

I noticed only one plane had the distinctive black and yellow tail. Is that reserved for squadron leaders or something?
+Avera9eWh1teShark6 its cymbol of the team ... we call it CAG bird ..every team have one CAG bird .. CAG paint is special than others

Cag means commander air group
at 2:27 there is a plane with a High viability color scheme, i dont see any others with this paint scheme is it the squadron leaders plane?
well Im over there every once in a while so ya might see me and not even know it. lol Those guys are great!
@Eirik36 yeah the ones painted black and yellow are the CO and the XO i believe...the squad leaders
I hear yeah man! I am a Tomcat guy myself.......just didnt get the camera in time to prove it. But The tomcat spends way to much time on the ground after flights. no its just that the jolly rogers are the bad ass sqaudron vfa-103
Great Job Rob (as you can probably tell I am a fan of VFA-103 Jolly Rogers)
this is a homecoming video, can we please keep those F-14 vs Super bug comments for another video?
Well done my friend!
Military life...! Damn how I miss it!
If Grumman was given the chance to introduce the ST-21 the Horny could eat the dust in the desert instead.

@Eirik36 because the ones that are painted back and yellow are the leaders

at least they kept them a 2 man crew not a single.
although i'm an air force guy, VFA-103 and the F-18F are beast.
why is it that some are painted with black and yellow and some
are only gray?
The colored vertical stabs belong to the CO. Same as you guys in the AF the wing commander will have his own special bird all prettied up. I dont know if they still do but they would also designate a pretty bird for CAG too.
yes its the cags bird sqaudron commander
Hmm, someone please tell me why they al are two seated? Is it because of ex tomcat pilots who got used to 2 seat, and the navigator or whateva is sitting in the back.
BEST PLANE EVER..................
So what if I´m a Tomcat fanboy.
For its time, it was the best the Navy could offer, and to think it could defeat recent generation planes, is almost unheard of.
Super Hornet looks dull anyway! :P
Can someone please tell me the song here
This Action Airplan Army Music From Amerika Just Vor Me Alone . 😈
God bless the America ;)
Well it beats the hell out of the old name "Sluggers". Should have kept VF-74 instead though.
oh yeh it is super hornet which is two seated, here in most of the hornets (55) are single seated, and the rest are two seated (62 total hornets). cant wait to join the air force
But it's not the same without the F-14's :(
low vis for normal operations hi-vis for the commanding officer and show birds
at least they gave the jollys the super hornet and kept them a 2 man crew.since they had to give up their tomcats.they should have been the only sqaudron to keep their cats and kick ass against all these assclowns f-14 long live vf-84-103.

this is the super hornet which is a 2 seater so ya pilot and reo, navagator.
ทุกกองบินในประเทศ
ให้ฝูงบินนึงเลย
Still could have kept it for Air to Ground.
0.31 greetings to the german bundeswehr member :)
it'd be a great video if it didn't have that super annoying music. The sound of a jet engine sounds less of noise than this thing.
ya thats the cags bird.
BZ guys...RN submarine Jolly Roger👍
They got 2 weeks or less to spend with there family before getting redeployed and not seeing them again for the next couple of years or more if they don't come back dead!!!
You are here by and hence forth demoted from General to Idiot.
My favorite part is at 3:19 ;-)
filipino naval navigator in the squadron!!!!!
these are super hornets
@hoss44467xh I know, but doesnt beat FaF guys soz
Another Tomcat fanboy.......................the Tomcat wasn't that great of a plane. If you think about it, BVR missiles took over the Tomcats interceptor role. The Super Hornet is what WE need right now and in the future too.
