Here's what I read about the Dame Dash/Jay-Z fallout. Def Jam wanted to buy Roc-A-Fella, Dash wasn't for it, Jay-Z bought out Dash's stake in the company, sold it to Def Jam and Def Jam made him president. Don't know how true it is but it does sound plausible. Always wondered what happened to Roc-A-Fella and why would they make Jay-Z president. Plus cutting deals seems to be Jay-Z's forte, look at the Samsung/Magna Carta deal.
