Pondsmith, the creator of Cyberpunk, specified exactly what causes cyberpsychosis, in one of reddit threads.
In short, it's the combination of past and current trauma, addiction to modification, and detachment from reality. And the going psycho he described as gym bro going into roid rage.

Originally in the 2020 pen and paper game it was supposed to be mind control, but because it was corpos doing it in the lore the publishers thought that was to anti capitalist so they changed it. 2020 was published in the 80s near the end of the cold war so that would explain why the game hints at it becoming a future plot twist.

In my headcanon cyberpsychosis is something that can be cured, but it's very expensive, so it's very inaccessible for all but the wealthiest.
Also in my headcanon, the reason why Adam Smasher isn't going out of control, is because cyberpsychosis is your human parts rejecting the machine parts, but Adam Smasher is like 99% machine(so there's less anything "human" left in him to reject the implants), and as he's Arasaka's favorite tool, he's also getting top of the line meds and therapies to keep him somewhat sane.

As people have pointed out in the comments, the “theory” existed before edgerunners. It’s implied in the game (and I think in the rpg before that) that the idea of cyberpsycosis is a creation of the mega corps to avoid having to help the people affected by it, just saying that they are unsaveable. It’s not done by the corporations themselves, but they prefer to not have to help them

It's a 'theory' only in the actual game world setting. On a 'player knowledge' level, it's always been really clear that that IS NOT what it is, as they laid out the system for Cyberpsychosis and it had nothing to do with debt or pissing off Corpos. It was never actually a theory OUTSIDE the setting. The people walking around Night City might think this, the players controlling them at the tabletop session....don't. They know better.

  • @rhodes3983

I played the game 5 times by now and went through the Cyberpsycho questline just as many times.
And from that I can say:
It's never really been about the cyberware. Almost all of them had something else going on in their brain, like PTSD, drug addiction (or like in Maine's case cyberware addiction) or some other form of trauma.
To my mind the cyberware just acts as a catalyst for psychosis because of the strain it puts on your nervous system.
The only two cases in the game that I can remember where it was just cyberware causing the psychosis were:
    1. A soldier suffering from an implant malfunction (with her fear of what was happening to her body probably being the thing that sent her over the edge).
    2. A construction worker hooking up to an exoskeleton that was way too heavy duty for him and overloaded his nervous system.
In all other cases there was something else going on besides cyberaugmentation.
As to why Adam Smasher is seemingly immune to cyberpsychosis, I think there are two reasons:
    1. He is already completely unhinged and psychotic (he canonically only accepts a job when "collateral damage" is acceptable to his employer)
    2. He underwent full body conversion, which means he no longer has an organic body that could struggle with cyberware but is instead just a brain in a jar piloting a mech suit. The cyberware IS his body now.
And about the Cyberpsychosis quickhack, here is my take on it.
It essentially does to a human what the exoskeleton did to that construction worker I mentioned earlier. I think it just overloads their system and sends them into a momentary frenzy where they just attack everyone around them.
    It's not true cyberpsychosis.

The funny part is that both of these people only have at most half of the information on the lore. The TTRPGs literally have a mechanic for how much cyberware someone can take before going cyberpsycho. Smasher was already a cold blooded murderer before he had any metal put into him, so any further dissociating would have been redundant. V can't go cyberpsycho because of silverhand's mind was also inhabiting their body (that or rushed development). Also the way cyberpsychosis is portrayed in edgerunners is not how all cases of it go in the rest ofbthe universe.

If cyberpsychosis is a mental thing, V literally has Johnnys mind as a backup to split the mental load. Johnny only had the hand when he was alive so V could technically get double the implants anyone has before going psycho. But despite that, he is literally dying from the chip so he probably doesn’t care if he were to go psycho or not from implants as Johnny would take the body anyways.

One point yes Cyberpunk EdgeRunners is canon to Cyberpunk 2077 it canonically takes place a year before the video game. In fact fun fact before the anime came out there was a EdgeRunners update for the game that actually spoiled the ending to the anime with a drink name the David Martinez appearing in the After life bar in Night City whre legends in Night City get drinks named after them you can also even find Rebecca's guns in the game now so yes EdgeRunners is full on canon to the world of the game. Also the whole therory about something going on with Mr. blue Eye's is accurate as well as actually there has been ad of yet a huge unsolved mystery in Night City since the game came out.

6:50 it’s a prequel by the quite literally one year. The game takes place one year after the anime, and it’s been confirmed in the game that all the events from the anime are canon in the game so it’s a fair comparison with the edge runner side quest.
Besides that hearing your take I do agree that may pat probably didn’t play the full game and had someone else help him write this script, as they left out a bit that basically outright confirms this theory or at the very least canonically hints to it, at least in reference to AI being the source behind all of this:
    the blue eyed man.
In the game during that quest line, before you meet the would be mayor you get a call from an unknown number that when you pick up jacks into your ciberware in your head and tries to fuck with your mind, all while warning you to stop doing what your doing to aid the would be mayor or there would be consequences.
It’s insinuated that this guy is the figure head behind this entire quest line and the mind control.
After you finish the quest v and Johnny will talk about how fucked up this entire thing is, Johnny mentioning that he doesn’t think this has to do with people though and might be more closely related to something like himself, remembering how even back in his day there we’re rumors that rogue A.Is we’re a constant threat, lingering across the net like boogie men and monsters.
Not to mention at the very end of the game when the end credits roll, you see the mayor in his anagorarion ceremony, and in the background a strange man with bright glowing blue eyes is visible in the background, hence this AI controlling night corp being referred to as the blue eyed man.
Overall I think this is one of his better theories, and you probably went a bit too hard on your discredit of what he was saying. But than again, if you don’t play the game you probably wouldn’t know this type of stuff.

I love that 2077 brought more attention to the series....but at the same time, it's very obvious when you're talking to someone who only knows the game/anime. The theory is awful....because we have rule books that lay this out. It's only a 'theory' in the world of Cyberpunk....it's something Garry the Prophet would think, not CohCarnage, his player. Cause Coh can read the book and knows it's actually Humanity based system, and has nothing to do with hackers and megacorps.
That said, yes the Mr Blue Eyes quest is super tied to the idea of AI and Controlling people....but has nothing to do with Cyberpsychosis. I mean, do you remember how much space and high end tech was required to work on the Peralezs....you really think they got that shit everywhere? Not enough space, and way too costly for some nobodies on the street who MIGHT become a problem later.

Cyber psychoses was added to the pen and paper game as a check on players always adding more cybernetics. The idea was to soft cap the amount of in game money that could be spent on making player characters more powerful.
However, it's a totally unneeded system because players will naturally become uncaring monsters as they become more powerful. When a party needs to do something to complete a task or mission all the GM needs to do is put some normal humans, or innocents in their way and then watch as the players choose to ignore their humanity as they chase their goal/objective. Once the players go too far, and hurt too many people the natural response of other mercs or the police will then hunt them down.
For a modern reference look the The Boys for heroes ignoring and hurting people because they just don't care.

It's also possible that cyberpsychosis is just the DRM of the software for chrome. But what if it's the more clever DRM methods that some game developers have implemented in the past, where the software still "works", but it doesn't work quite right. So that while someone might be able to rip a copy of the software and think that they've bypassed the DRM since they can successfully install and run it, that might just be the first layer of security and official licensed version of the software/hardware either don't have the side effects or are entirely manageable with drugs.
Since it'd still a piece of ALL chrome software, a hacker could totally intentionally trigger it by editing the license key or injecting some kind of signal that changes the settings of the software.

My theory about cyberpsychos isn't a capital or mental breakdown. It's pretty simple. The ones that get infected are ones with too many different incompatible parts. This is causing the augments to not work properly, but since the processor to use the augments is connect to our brain we force the parts to work. This is causing bugs and glitches in our brain and, since our brains aren't cpu, they cannot just shutdown with an error stating what's wrong. Human brain has defense build in when too much stress or whatever is placed in it, it'll remove emotions, shutdown the body, or go into fight/flight mode. The reason it doesn't stop is because the parts are already installed and someone else has to remove them. The company also could of made some defected products and cover it up. All the symptoms they show is similar to a cpu with bad parts or programming but what a human would see or do if the processor was in their mind.

if the dude knows too much, or if they are not usefull enough to maintain considering how much he knows, boom, make him crazy, easy way to deal with it in general, not a lot of people would decide to search for info about it (that's "why they would do it if that's the case")
But basically yeah, it exists as normal, but also as a "hack" as it is already connected to the brain it wouldn't be impossible to scramble someone's mind a bit for them to go crazy, cause some trouble, and end up covered in lead
So you can end up developing cyberpsychosis because of your mindstate and relating to how chromed up you are, or be hacked and end up going out early
In general, it's obvious that it is used by the ones with enough money to do what they want
But yeah, the AI part I don't really buy completely

Cyberpsychosis is simply an acceptable risk to the corps profits and assets. Cyberware is not only highly profitable as a product but also dramatically improves productivity across all sectors of business. Not using them because occasionally one of the peons goes on a brief rampage just doesn't make sense from a business perspective. It can't be intentional mind control because if it were, the bloody rampages wouldn't be happening. The corps run everything in cyberpunk. They are interested only in profit. Sudden violence resulting in the death of employees and the destruction of property does not help with that at all. However, with how valuable cyberware is, they accept cyberpsychosis incidents as just the cost of doing business. If the system has parts that seem inefficient, just assume the corps can't or won't fix it as it isn't detrimental enough to the bottom line for them to care.
There's not some ai mastermind behind it all. It's simply a matter of profit outweighing human life in the eyes of the corps

The anime took liberties with cyberpsychosis. That's all.
Cyber psychosis exists in Cyberpunk, but it has never been a primary issue like the anime makes it out to be. Some people get it, some don't, cyber psychosis is not at all guaranteed just by getting more chrome like the anime. It isn't a conspiracy, either. The lore of Cyberpunk is incredibly deep, so Pondsmith would have brought this up himself over the game's 30+ years if he ever intended it to be like this.
So that's how to look at this show. It is awesome, but it plays up cyber psychosis more than it should. The show would still be just as impactful without so much focus on it. David still dies in battle against Smasher. Becca can still have her moment looking into David's eyes knowing he will die. Maine can still go down in his blaze of glory. They can still encounter the ones effected, and it can still be talked about. But it should not have been this "you will 100% die because of this chrome."

How did he make a theory about cyber psychosis and not touch on the actual quest line about subduing cyber psychosis and the findings at the end of that quest? Which does suggest there is more to cyberpsychosis than 'chrome make you crazy' but it's more about how crappy Night City is and the stress and isolation etc that living there puts you through and the experiences of these people being driven over the edge. The chrome makes it worse but it's not the only factor involved.
Also cyber psychosis is not a new thing in this setting, look back to the cyberpunk 2020 ttrpg for example and it's there. It's not some new thing being introduced by these ais.
The reason Adam Smasher is as high functioning as he is, is because he was already a bloodthirsty psychopath even before getting chromed. They put 'Yeah, right' for his empathy stat.

I mean, both forms of cyberpsychosis are not mutually exclusive, there could be software made specifically to induce a state of psychosis in victims exposed to it, and also the natural paths for a person to suffer the condition without being shoved off of the cliff on purpose. The state of mind of the victim clearly also matters and affects how susceptible they are and how far gone they get and how fast. Could certianly see some corporation creating a psycho-virus as a kind of 'protection' for the implants they make for mil spec users and in-house corporate security... That way when such gets stolen, copied or sold to people not authorised... well those dont have the right protections or key steps on the installation which leaves the offenders on a path of self-destruction.

I always figured that Cyberpychosis is the combination of both too many mentally straining implants with an already unstable mind
Examples of which are prevelant within the game and anime
Game example: The Militech agent, It would make sense for a soldier to have some mental issues given what a soldier would go through, add some implants that stress the mind too much and they'll snap.
Anime example: David has to deal with the trauma of his mother dying right in front of him, and then assumes the weight of responsibility of caring for the gang believing he isnt strong enough to do so and jacks up on implants bringing his mind to the edge.

Delamain wasn't just trying to gain control, it was trying to REGAIN control of rogue aspects of it's own programming, lest they 1) tarnish the Delamain brand and 2) let on that Delamain is a full-functional A.I., which carries a terrible stigma, because the NET.

OK, If he at least under HOW Cyberpsychosis works, then he might of had a shot. It's a PSYCHOSIS, first and foremost. The mind fractures due to the stress put on the brain as it is unable to reconcile the absence of limbs/organs while at the same being told that they are still present by the cyberware. It's a literal overload of phantom limb syndrome as the brain goes: "I know there's a limb but it's not MY limb". And once the brain gets to it on repeat, things go bad, reality disconnects and psychosis sets in.
And it's a prevalent facet present in ALL settings that have prevalent use of cyberware.

  • @Emilis2023

Yeah, sometimes I like the stuff Matt's team comes up with, but this was one of those episodes where he heard how popular the show was and decided to come up with a theory then look for anything he could find to back it. Pretty sure that terminal that was saying Maxtac often struggled with cyberpsychosis was suggesting because they had so much cyberware, some of their members would sometimes go psycho, not they were all cyberpsychos and occasionally had problems controlling it. And the reason V could get pretty much every implant without going psycho was because he was about to die from that relic thing anyway. Presumably if he didn't have that and completely covered himself in as much cyberware as the player usually puts him in, then he'd of gone psycho before long after the game's story. Besides, in both the game and show we see again and again the first thing the corps do when they hear someone goes psycho is try and kill them as soon as possible, not recruit them. Possibly the two exceptions we know being that girl from the trailer and Adam, but I took her as more of an easteregg than a worldbuilding hint. And Adam Smasher ... well he's just built different.

I'm not really sure what the theory is here... Cyberpsychosis is well described in the universe.
From the game, anime and the small amount I read about the original tabletop RPG source, cyberpsychosis is a catchall term for any insanity brought on by cyberware. So it can be triggered by external hacking, but more commonly it's a loss of a person's sense of humanity as they become more "borg" than man.
The reason it is classed as a death sentence and the disorder isn't well defined is due apathy by those in power. They really don't care about an individuals wellbeing, so they only "treat" those they deem useful and murder the rest. This "treatment" usually keeps them as psychotic but on a leash (e.g. Smasher, MaxTac)
Smasher is a particularly special case as he was psychotic prior to receiving any implants and the original writer classified him as a "high-functioning cyberpsycho."

Nux, I like your videos, but the Edgerunners and 2077 are canon. Of course, it's standalone, but it's connected to the universe. Not only that, but the fun fact is that Cyberpunk was made as TTRPG in 1988, and Mike Pondsmith made Cyberpunk as a whole, including Edgerunners, as a series. And next, you and Mat may be right or wrong because the lore is not just in the game but from the Tabletop role-playing game. The lore and theories are fucking bigger, and I suggest you need to know everything from the Cyberpunk universe.
Cyberpsychosis does exactly exist to make them brainwashed and control their minds. Because there were four corporate wars between Militech and Arasaka, most of the soldiers did get hacked, turned into psychos, or made their heads explode since some soft were not strong enough. One legendary netrunner by the name of Rache Bartmoss did manage to shut down all the networks, and by all, I mean the internet, but his body is lifeless, and he turns himself into a Rogue AI. I believe I know why Arasaka uses children to go to Blackwall to find him and Alt Cunningham as baits.
I may not know most of them, but if you dwell down Cyberpunk lore, I'm not going to sugarcoat things, it's a fucking shit show of a ride.

Smasher replaced his brain with a computer. He's not unique the true problem of the show is that "cyber psychosis" isn't actually what they show it to be. What they show are supposed to be effects of an implant rejection which is why it's treated with immuno suppressants however the effects from a body rejecting prosthetic implants are caused by metal particulates entering the blood stream cobalt and titanium of which implants would be made of have no psychosis inducing effects the real problem of the psychological disorder that could or would end up as shown would actually be due to the fact that the human brain would be freaking out that those aren't it's parts like phantom limb on mega steroids. This brings me back to smasher replacing his brain with a computer which would mean he couldn't go cyberpsycho. However because the writers don't know jack the in universe reason is likely that he's immuno deficient they also telegraph the ending way to hard like every episode after mane dies is basically a death flag for everyone except Lucy
