This couldn't have come at a better time! I'm planning on making a costume soon and the main problem I was having was how to make a pattern. Thanks so much for this. Also if you're doing a full body costume would you want to make Ducktape segments for every limb?
Glad it's helpful! It depends what you are planning for the limbs, a duct tape form is a good starting place, but for a limb, because it articulates, you need some extra room to allow for motion....it can get a little tricksy.... Been a long time fan of yours and I am so greatful you still keep up your work till this day. Started watching you way back when you just released the top hat and googles videos and I was so captivated by your tutorials and your creativity! I remember I had to beg my mother to buy one of your patterns since I hadnt had my own income back then but thanks to this I got hooked! I made almost all of your patterns and always get excited when you release something new! You got me into the world of steampunk and foamcraft and recently I even got invited to display my pices at an local art Gallery wich is like a dream come true!

Well, this is perfect. I’ve been designing plush toys but I’m better at sculpting than designing so if I sculpt the lil guy with some junk mail and make a duct tape overlay I can get a good starting point. I’ve been building them from paper models so far with mixed results. Duct tape would act more like fabric.

This is a way to make glove patterns, too. Wrap your hand in plastic wrap and get someone else to go over it with small pieces of tape. I drove by the ShurTape factory twice today.

Amazing seeing the old footage, a very bland basement then ! Lol ! I never knew what those candies were called, though I am in the USA, so might be a different name?!
A great tutorial! I would also add that aluminum foil makes a great base as well ! I sadly do NOT have recycling at my apt., so I wash used foil and use it for sculpting. So, it is getting recycled ! ♻️ Love the trick with the clear wrap & duct tape ! I tend to make "one off" sculptures, but I HAD been thinking about doing more pieces like a giant Chess Set, so, patterning would be key !
Aluminum foil!! Of course that would work so well! Crazy I never thought of that, but it'd be great for holding it's shape and also being somewhat moldable. Love that you recycle it as well. My great aunts were still on their first ever roll of cling wrap- they would wash and re-use it over and over. Not so much cling left after the first couple washings though:)
Amazing! A question, how do you account for the difference that the thickness of foam usually makes? I find that's my biggest issue when making patterns like this
Hmm, that's a great question. For a pattern like this one, it doesn't really come into play, since the foam that will be used is going to be 2 or 3 mm thick, so not enough to make a huge difference. However, once you get into using 5-8mm thick foam, it does make a difference. Say, you are making a simple tube that will fit your head. If the duct tape template fits your head exactly and you cut foam according to it, you need to think that you are splitting the difference of the thickness of the foam between the inside and outside of your duct tape template. So, if you had 8mm thick foam, there would be 4mm of thickness sitting inside of where the duct tape template would sit. The inside diameter of that tube will be (4mm+4mm for opposite edges) 8mm smaller. In practice, I don't really do much actual math, I just kind of add a little if I think I will need it:)
Could you go over how to make the alignment marks when the parts span across two sheets?
Sorry, I don't quite understand what you are asking, can you clarify what you mean?
@@LostWax when a piece spans two sheets of paper you add crosses to the corners and use your window to align the two sheets of paper. I was curious how you placed those crosses so the pieces always line up.
@@galactica2001 Ahh, I see. Thats something I do after I draft the full size pattern pieces. Once I have the pieces drafted, I have a template I made in Affinity Designer that allows me to export overlapping images that are the right size to print. So, where the pages overlap, that's where the alignment marks are.

I have a question, how important it is to be precise with the shape and contouring as you shape the paper first?
Hmmm, little inconsistencies get smoothed out as you go through the process, so it doesn't have to be perfect, just as close as you can get it.
@@LostWax thanks alot. Im working on making a mold for an antropomorphic goat(Baphomet), so i actually am trying to sculpt a whole head. For a first time cosplay idea, i didnt choose the easiest, but it is working out well for now. Your video is great for beginners ☺️
