- The new film "Maestro" tells the complicated love story between composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein and his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre. Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with Bradley Cooper, the movie's star, co-writer, producer and director, about playing one of the most charismatic and controversial musical figures of the 20th century. He also talks with Bernstein's children (Jamie Bernstein, Nina Bernstein Simmons, and Alexander Bernstein) about the life and legacy of their father being brought to the screen.

Would you believe I met LB when I was a kid? My father was an IRS agent, assigned to review the taxes of soprano Eileen Farrell. We drove across the new Verrazano Bridge to Staten Island, and my father got down to business with Farrell’s policeman husband. She offered me a lemonade. My father was a classical/opera buff, so he was already thrilled. He heard someone tinkling on the piano in a nearby room. Miss Farrell noticed his interest and said, “Wanna meet Lenny? He’s in the music room.” My father almost fainted, and I get to brag that I met Farrell and Bernstein on the same day!
Astounding!
Now that is cool!!!
Clearly, you're a Wagner fan guessing & going by your handle. Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic story.
I had the extremely good fortune to have had a few encounters with Bernstein. At the time, I had no idea how they would impact my life in ways I could never have predicted. My 1st encounter was as a scholarship student at Tanglewood, the summer home of The Boston Symphony Orchestra. As a soprano, I had no classes with Bernstein, who taught conducting. However, one day, in the middle of a masterclass with Phyllis Curtain, our teacher, in wafted LB with a cloud of men trailing behind him. At some point, he walked upbto the piano, asked the pianist to move over, and he began coaching me on a Mozart lieder (of which there are very few). I was mortified, shaking in my boots but within seconds, he not only put me at ease, removing all fear and self consciousness, he coaxed a sound out of me that I had never heard mysrlf make, which I actually didn't have yet. It would take years before that sound would be mine. The downside of that and many other mind-blowing experiences I had the two summers I spent training there is that it would take years before I would grow into the status of working with great conductors. After Bernstein, the conductors on the level at which I made my career entry paled and horribly disappointed, not only lacking talent but also lacking zest and enthusiasm for music. After a 40 year career, unfortunately, I can count on one hand the conductors I worked with who came close to the magic and genius I experienced that one summer afternoon with LB ( although we students sang in the choir at Tanglewood so we got to see many great conductors in action).
Th second encounter happened after moving to NYC from Boston to begin my career. A friend & colleague invited me to go with her to Jessye Norman's dressing room at Carnegie Hall after a performance. She welcomed us as young singers and invited us into her dressing room. At some point, a knock on an adjoining door and in walked LB. There he was with a serious tan and silver gleaming hair dressed in a beautiful multicolored dressing gown. Ms. Norman towering over him turned to us to introduce us, and to my utter astonishment, he remembered me and inquired into my career progress.
I met many other world famous artists as a student the two summers and was crestfallen to realize that very few reach the pentacle of the business where true magic is made. Although, I became a solid, working international opera/oratorio/concert singer with a respectable and for some, enviable career singing on many international opera and concert stages, nothing ever quite topped those formidable years walking the halls (or rather grounds) with and learning from the giants of my profession.
From what I've seen from the trailer snippets, Cooper has channeled this giant of a man to near perfection.
@@yubantwo2086Thank you for sharing these wonderful moments.
Fantastic story
Bradley's quote about it took him 6 1/2 years of working on it for 6 minutes is priceless when they talk about if he conducted it in the movie. If people would only understand what all goes into creating art such as he has done.
@@alpinoalpini3849 of course it's not the same.
@@alpinoalpini3849 Whoa, wait... to ALL musicians? Damn... it may have taken you a long time to talk to everyone! :-) Maybe, just say "his movies still look unconvincing to this musician". It's just kinder. Also, much more accurate. Peace :-)
If peoples can't see it - it is a huge compliment and those who can see it, must realise how extreamly Bradley Cooper performs such an extradionary personality. Noone, who wants to be taken serious, can seriously be negative about this issue!😘
Bradley Cooper spent six years learning to conduct six minutes of music so he could film It live on Maestro set.
It takes blood sweat tears and a lot of Time,
(AND LUCK )
( LUCK is when preparation meets opportunity )!!!
Actor...writer...director...
Bradley Cooper is ALREADY becoming an elder statesman of cinema. He's showing us the fruits of what he's wanted to do since he began.
Reminding me of John Cassavetes more and more lately. Don't forget to add producer to that list of credits
After “Silver Linings Playbook” I realized THIS IS A REAL ACTOR. A magnetic, bona fide movie star who is also an artist. Not many like him.
I was a senior in high school in 1967. Our music theory class had the privilege of going to Lincoln Center on a day in the spring to hear the New York Philharmonic and see Leonard Bernstein conduct. It was the first time I heard the Sibelius symphony #1. I still remember how Bernstein used his left hand to get the violins to increase their crescendo. One of the most memorable times of my life! Can’t wait to see the movie.
Cooper continues to amaze us
As a little girl who never missed Bernstein's Young People's Concerts on television, I can't be more excited to see this film. He was so brilliant, so mesmerizing, and fostered my love of music and singing.
Same here! We also had Tchaikovsky's "Peter and the Wolf" album, narrated by Einstein. Happened to come across it on NPR Radio last week, and was flooded with warm memories. We were an ordinary farming family, but our mother loved classical music and instilled that love in her children, and my daughter and her children now also love it. The music of "West Side Story" has some of the most beautiful chord changes ever! Bernstein was a genius, and a treasure.
@@rivkaclifford427 How wonderful to have your mother instill this lifelong treasure of the joy, rapture and inspiration of music......whether classical or Broadway, and even rock and roll. I remember my father trashing the Beatle's (who I adored), and then he heard Leonard Bernstein talk about their genius. I admit that I took great satisfaction in that!
I show them to my HS Orchestra Students! ❤
@@joemack10 That's so wonderful Joe. Your students are lucky to have you! My HS was huge and we had four choruses, 2 orchestras and a band. I learned more, not only about music, but about life, from those teachers. Music teachers are the best!!!!!
This looks soooo good. I can already tell awards are calling! Cooper is a genius.
They should give Bradley Cooper the Oscar. Its time, before its too late and they're hastily giving him a consolation one 10 years from now. This is the right project. This is the right time.
I hope it gets a slew of nominations.
I bet he has a chance. The academy loves to give the award for biographies. Ben Kingsley etc.
Who honestly cares? Bradley Cooper is a multimillionaire, and you're spending your time worrying about him winning some meaningless award? He doesn't spend a single second of his day worrying about you.
The Oscar voters has a better opinion than anybody else, and I trust them.
I'm rooting for Cillian Murphy, but if it doesn't happen. Bradley is my pick
Cillian Murphy tho
Bradley Cooper is so very talented! Can't wait to see the movie!
Finally a movie that relies on the real training and skills of classical musicians and not something auto-tuned to death. Let’s bring back the real appreciation for properly trained musicians (and I’m including the singers in that category). So excited to watch this and not have to shake my head at watching actors pretend to play instruments or sing.
I'm SO excited about this film. The previews look AMAZING. Loving the idea that Leonard Bernstein is about to be introduced to a whole new generation of fans through what looks to be an extraordinary film by Bradley Cooper.
now we just need a George Gershwin movie
@@84paratize There was one made in 1945 with Robert Alda playing Gershwin. The movie's called Rhapsody in Blue. But yes, it could be great to have a new movie made about Gershwin.
Just saw it . Brilliant film. Cooper was great although his Bernstein come off much nicer than Bernstein actually was. Lenny was pretty much a creepy lecherous pompous narcissist who hurt many people. Still a remarkable performance acting and directing. Cooper is just impossible not to like no matter what he is doing or who he plays. This movie really takes him to a new level of artistry. He will be taken seriously. The sky's the limit.
He came to our high school to demonstrate the beauty of the orchestra. I learned to play piano from the sheet music of 'West Side Story'. Extraordinary.....
My mom and Grandmom would watch Leonard Bernstein’s symphonies on TV. And I remember watching the Young People’s symphonies. It’s probably one of the reasons I enjoy classical music.
I am so insanely excited about this movie. I saw the trailer and I could not believe what Bradley Cooper was doing as an actor. Amazing work.
Me too! Cant wait.
Same. And I don’t even like movies.
I can not wait to see this movie. I once saw Lenny from far away for 5 seconds when I was in Jr High. I consider myself lucky to have been in the same building as such a genius.
Haven't been this excited about a movie in a long time.
I just fell in love with Bradley Cooper all over again- what an immense talent
This looks absolutely stunning in every single way.
I’ve always thought that Leonard Bernstein was so elegant and urbane, and such an incredible force of nature when he was conducting. He was completely connected to his art. I loved watching him from when I was a little kid. Bradley emanates that same passion for what he does, so I’m not surprised he was drawn to Bernstein’s story.
Bernstein was probably the most music-obsessed of all conductors; the world owes him a great deal, but above all the rediscovery of Gustav Mahler and of course the uber-musical "West Side Story", undoubtedly the best ever written.
Yes and amen!
Can’t wait to see this. Bradley Cooper is so talented. But Bernstein is my favorite composer who composed the score to my favorite movie ‘West side Story.”
Leonard Bernstein was my hero in music. I became a music teacher (band orchestra jazz-state band, piano, composition, African drumming) and was absolutely devastated when he refused to accept me as a conducting student. I had hoped to follow in his footsteps in teaching music to adults and students and conducting. I wrote him while I was in college and had traveled to NY to meet him. His reply was curt: "women will never be conductors". I wish I had that letter. He made me angry enough to do what I dreamed. I loved teaching.
If what you say is true, then I'm very dissapointed of him.
@@leonardogabrieltrevinoloba2377 I think he was simply stating a harsh fact about the general attitude worldwide about women and conducting. He might not have cared if a woman conducted. He was perhaps steering her away from futility.
@@pamelaroyce5285your response disregards the truthful words that came from Bernstein’s own lips. A person can be great yet still have prejudice and flaws.
@@tbizzy2580 the quote does not say women cannot be conductors, or that women are not capable of being conductors. Therefore, this quote is not sufficient evidence of prejudice. It is only a statement that needs elaboration we will never get (because he is dead). This statement alone is not enough to convict him of prejudice. Looking at it as a defense attorney, for example, I would say to the jury he merely said what he believed to be true: women will never be conductors - but he did not say why he thought so. People once said people will never go to the moon. They were wrong but not prejudiced.
There is a magic that happens when a great actor takes on a persona. We can see this here as Cooper becomes Bernstein. It is AMAZING!
Bradley is such a great artist. I even noticed him asking questions on Inside The Actors Studio. So proud of him.
Omg I thought I was the only who remembered that it’s such a full circle moment to watch his interview there after noticing him ask questions years before
the physical resemblance is astonishing! can't wait to see it!
I was privileged to have worked with Bernstein as a young person in the mid 1980s. Both of Bernstein's orchestral concerts in which I performed were formative events for me, yet I went on to perform with other great orchestras and soloists for 30 years, and although I was grateful for those Bernstein experiences, I didn't think much about them as the decades flew by. However, the Bradley Cooper film bits I've seen in various trailers and here in this feature segment have affected me deeply and have helped me realize now that my personal musical experiences as a young musician with Bernstein were only a part of what "Lenny" gave to me. With waves of emotion crashing over me, having seen these few moments of Bradley Cooper's uncanny performance, I now understand that Bernstein's influence on me began much earlier, with my mother's LP collection, and with all the televised performances and interviews I saw on PBS growing up. His Harvard Lectures, broadcast in the early 1970s---far too early for me to have understood 1/100th of what he was communicating when I was 10 or 12 years old---did finally seep in as I watched and re-watched them. I now realize that Bernstein gave me a great part of my musical identity as a performing "American" musician. I can't wait to see this film. I thank Bradley Cooper from the bottom of my heart for awakening my latent appreciation of Leonard Bernstein.
Six years to become Bernstein, movies have certainly evolved since the old days.
Yes, the Harvard Lectures were NOT for ten or twelve-year olds, but you were too young to have seen Bernstein's Young People's Concerts, which disappeared for years after his last telecast in 1972, before commercial video and youtube.
Yes! I’m so grateful to my parents for recognizing his great worth, and plopping us down in front of the set to watch his programs.
This is the film of the year.
I CANNOT wait! So looking forward to this film. Lenny was one of the true greats as a conductor, composer, but maybe most as an educator. The number of people he turned on to classical music is immeasurable.
Bernstein was more than mahler's 2nd. He was a great mahlerian with all of the music and his haydn, Schuman, and sibelius are phenomenal.
We should appreciate that he may have been the greatest conductor of the 20th century and not lose sight of his amazing legacy
I'd have to give that honor to Von Karajan, or Toscanini.
Bernstein was the epitome of everything Mahler.
His children are NOTHING like I would have expected. What a childhood.
What did you expect them to be like?
@jefolson6989 And how are they supposed to look?
@@sarahjones-jf4pr didn't say anything about their looks. Just how they speak & behave is not what I would have expected. Too normal.I guess.
The eldest daughter's book is an interesting and well-written memoir.
@@jefolson6989 understood you mean manner yes they are refreshingly down to earth don't you think.
He is amazing!! I'm in love of the few scenes of the film. Talented actor and director. 🙏🏻
I am a huge fan of LB. I love his genius, his range is jaw dropping from the hardest to interpret classic orchestral scores crossing over to popular Broadway - though Broadway with an intellectual and very profound twist. Candide, which I’ve seen 5 productions of, was an imperfectly structured piece until Scottish Opera revived it in the 1980s, LB went to Glasgow and worked on it yet again and it finally blossomed into a marvel. I saw it immediately it transferred to London’s Old Vic. You can hear the musical shadow of both Mozart and West Side Story in it. Make Our Garden Grow is the most thrilling anthem. All true geniuses are hard to live with, but here his children effortlessly project their admiration, appreciation and pure love for their father (and mother).
The Mahler 2 scene of Bradley conducting with arms flinging wide open and then swiftly back to clutching his body is SO powerful it brings me to tears! BRAVO IN ADVANCE, BRADLY!
A Star is Born was amazing …..I CAN NOT WAIT to see this film!!! 🙏🏽🥹❤️))))
Yes. That is the quintessence of Bernstein! Lennie led the Mahler revival and there's no greater piece of Mahler than the Second Symphony, one of the greatest pieces of music, period. Nothing better captures LB as the greatest communicator of music than his conducting the finale of the Resurrection Symphony! I join my friend here in tears just to see this, just to know that those who've not heard or seen this before may now do so. Cooper has performed an invaluable service here!
Saw the movie last night. The Mahler scene was… I can’t describe it, except to say Bradley Cooper found a way to put me (the audience) RIGHT INSIDE THE MUSIC. It was exhilarating, I would even say profound. If this is a bit crude, it was like the best, most communicative sex I’ve ever had.
My father gave me the LP of Bernstein’s performance of William Tell. When I heard the piece, as a child with a hearing
loss, I wept! It was so beautiful. ❤
Can’t wait to see the movie. Leonard Bernstein was a legend. His passion was contagious.
Bradley Cooper and Mahler 2, a dream come true! ♥️🎶

I loved that they used Brahms “Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90” for these clips. Ironically, I'll be seeing it at of all places, Carnegie Hall next Friday.
Can't wait to see this movie! Thank you Bradley Cooper and Bernstein family.
Mad crush on Bernstein and now this. Bradley Cooper is divine!
I can't wait to see this film. Is there anything Bradley can't do? He really becomes a character and transforms into it. I couldn't believe it was him when I saw this. He is a chameleon, while other actors remain themselves physically. Love his work ❤
This 70-year old cannot wait to see this movie.

Can't wait to see this movie. Went to his anniversary conducting concert at Carnegie and as we provided the 9' Baldwin and I managed the NYC stores - my mom and I attended and went back stage afterwards and my mom told Lenny - "I was exhausted watching you conduct" (he did so much direction with his shoulders) - Lenny replied to my mom that No - you should feel energized! A treat of a night, especially when who should sit next to us for the performance was but Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger. As vivid as if it happened last night!
Yeah... Cooper amd Mulligan have to be the front runners for best actor/actress Oscar. You can just feel the weight of their performance. It doesn't need to be explained, its just peak acting.
The problem with that conclusion is that you have two other actors who are even better in their movies this year: Decaprio in Killsrs of the Harvest Moon and Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer.

I learned about the Maestro by attending concerts at TANGLEWOOD, the summer home of the Boston Symphony. TANGLEWOOD was also home to Leonard Bernstein. I completely agree !!!!! I can't believe this film did not have all the recognition it deserves (awards, audience, etc.) !!!!! This is a masterpiece of writing, mise en scène, acting, etc. ! Every shot is a work of art (reminds me of Tarkovski, Bob Fosse)... It is criminally underrated, and will be considered a masterpiece in 20 years from now while many blockbusters will be forgotten :)
@@StephenDedalus74 I was disappointed that it didn't win any awards that I know of. Oppenheimer overshadowed it.
