Tescoliner STRUGGLES to restart after crew change!
Avanti timetable chaos after signalling issues in the south
14 and 15 Dec 22
14th December saw the second day of an RMT strike. Only Avanti were running some Euston - Glasgow passenger services. Freight was restricted to Intermodals running before the signal centres and power signal boxes closed after being run by managers.
Additionally Network Rail had hired Locomotive Services Ltd to run early trains on the Crewe to Carlisle section of the WCML to break ice from the power wires.
On 15th December little seemed different, despite not being a strike day. Neither Northern nor Scotrail ran trains.TransPennine Express ran some and Avanti tried to deliver a service. Two issues caused Chaos as the timetable fell apart for Avanti - a signalling issue in the morning caused delays and Avanti some terminating trains from both North and South at Crewe. The second issue appears to have been the weather in Scotland affecting the WCML south of Carstairs and on Beattock bank.
With Northern parking two 156 units were blocking Platform 1 For whatever reason the signallers routed the southbound Tesco train through A Road. The track was covered in frost and ice after several days unused. Thanks to the skill of DRS drivers, the train was brought in cautiously and came to a stop without issue. After a crew change, the new driver took things very carefully with his pair of Class 68s. but from my viewpoint the locos struggled to restart the train without slipping.

Why spend the day shivering on Carlisle station when I can watch Les's superb recordings instead !? Thanks Les !
That's the spirit! Glad you enjoy!
A big thank you Les for bringing a superb video into my warm living room in such freezing conditions.I salute you my good man.
Thanks!
Black Festive baubles in mourning to the Good Old Days when railway job careers were for life and people could afford to buy a home even eraning less compared to today's situation of appetizing flexible Zero Hours contracts promessing better wages until the day we get ill and inadequated to carry out tasks for the greedy and fat belly Lords who own the World and our railway. Thank you for sharing the lovely video and hat off fot being brave in that cold weather on a strike day traying capture the most a rather unreliable traffic day.
Thanks
Oh to be retired! Loved watching this. Down here in Plymouth we don’t get much freight traffic these days & it’s just nice to see something different. Love the information that goes with the film.
Thanks Mark. Freight is something we can need more of even up here.
A real Tesco fest, and fantastic to see so much freight with good loadings. The double-headed 66 and 68,s sound tremendous. As you say the driver on the 68 did a great job pulling away on frosty rails with such a heavy loading. Thanks for braving the cold 😁😁
Thanks! Although I usually treat the Tesco trains as part of the scenery, they are long heavy trains. In fact the three flows recorded are remarkably long and heavy. The driver, when I spoke to him, was totally bemused why the signallers put is train in that road!Glad you enjoyed.
The traction computers will have done all the work, the driver just sets the power. Its not 1950 any more.
Great video Leslie, I love the 68s seems so strange seeing an empty station with no passengers.
Thanks! Indeed - more 'stand-in' managers playing at dispatchers than passengers!
Saw some bits coming through York on rail cam including 434 who managed to regain a LOT of time!
Thanks for getting out Les!🙂
It was an interesting few hoirs each day. The real motivation was to see what LSL had sent up each day!
I always enjoy your videos Les, especially the details of the train, headcode, etc, but would love the time shown when it is actually being filmed, as it would be a big help understanding when they can be seen 👍
Thanks Stephen, interesting suggestion. Need to see how I can add that without making the captions look too long
Hi Les Another great video recording the goings on at Carlisle, some good footage of the 68 pulling away on the icy rails and a rare sight to see on A Road. The 70 is always a nice sight to me, putting out loads of 'clag' just like the diesels of yesteryear, I wonder why they don't seem to use the 'bio-diesel' (non-smoky stuff) that the 68's seem to use. Inter City flying the flag again for 'old' traction enthusiasts, lol. Take care out there, keep warm and thanks.
Thanks Peter. Some good stuff on what I'd expected to be uneventful days eh?
Thanks for braving the cold to give us some great views. Stay safe
Thanks Mike!
Great stuff Leslie, having the 87 and 92 all to yourself in the middle there. We just had 1 train an hour here in Newport today. Nothing else. All the best.
The passenger service on Avanti was every two hours each way I think. Assuming they ran!
That was a rare sight Leslie - the freight going through the outside lines rather the main undercover part of the station. Station looked very earie on the strike day. Cheers Euan
It certainly was Euan. The station has been very quiet with more enthusiasts come to see the electric locos than passengers!
Thanks Les. Great container and traction shots. Now back to the model railway in the warm. 🙂
Thanks, glad you enjoyed
Anothergreat video Les nice to see you inttoduced this one from home where its nice n warm 🩸 some great capyured of the 68s they sond awesome , and theat very compotant driver did superB on the A road to get things going again thanks for sharing matey 👍
top man A T B Take care Syd👍
Thanks Syd!
Well, the chaos was interesting. I don't think I shall travel to the UK again until this is all sorted out and it is warm again. You made me shiver looking at the dusting of snow and frost.
It is a bit ridiculous at the moment David. I know my thoughts of making a trip even across to Newcastle are on hold until it all gets sorted.
it looks like we're back in lockdown again lol I remember being on Manchester piccadilly in February 2021 I was the only person on the platform it was very weird! Nice footage of the freighters and the roarer and skoda 🥰😍🤩
Thanks!
Great video les looking forward to back to Carlisle in the spring
Thanks Peter
My first visit to your channel and very impressed I am too. Well presented and great photography. Have subscribed and shall work my way through yoiur videos over the next few weeks.
As a young child in the 70s I remember fondly getting the train several times with my mother from Newcastle to Carlisle, then changing trains at about midnight for the Stranraer train, as we were heading to Northern Ireland to see relatives.
My wife and I got a 'Two Together' railcard a few weeks ago and had a 3-day trip to London which was our first trip away for years. We had a great time, so much so we've already got another break booked for Edinburgh in March.
I've also been looking at day trips .. Carlisle is a possibility, as is York and Hexham. I just wish we had heard about the railcard earlier.. We do own a campervan, but a railway journey plus Premier Inn stay is a wee bit better.
The London trip was for my wife's 60th birthday and Edinburgh will be for my 65th .. so luxury is more important now .. old bones and 'all that'
Regards from Whitley Bay
Thank you Brian. You'll find Carlisle a worthwhile place to visit on top of the trains!
Great catches ,with info, from the Citadel, Leslie. 6:29 , 6 locos in the station !!
Sorry only just found your channel , but subscribed too.
Thanks Phil. Carlisle can get quite busy at time with loco hauled.
"Avanti WestCoast tried to run a timetable" pretty much sums up the current state of the trains haha! Great home library you have there Leslie. Merry Xmas!
Thanks!
This demand a flashmob - one day make a tour to this station just for fun.
lol, thanks for watching
hi Les another great video with all its troubles and cold for you to stand about in but thank you for doing it for us i hope things get a bit better for you if I dont get to see anymore of your videos may i wish you and your family seasons greetings and please stay safe my friend
Thanks!
Cheers Les...lot's of interesting angles on this one ....keep them coming...
Thanks Declan
Great footage again Les well done happy Xmas to you and family take care stay safe
Thanks!
Another great video Les. Stay warm and have a wonderful Christmas
Thanks David!
Another high quality video Les.
Excellent as usual.
Thanks Ken!
The whole point of the traction control systems on modern diesel-electrics is that the driver doesn't have to show any skill - the traction controls do all the work for him under any conditions.
Interesting but a shame in some ways that work is deskilled.
3:20 beautiful redstart
I think it was a robin. Very common but unusual in the station.
While I enjoy watching the UK trains Les, this one makes me glad I live in Florida.
HAHA thanks Jorge.
The lady Penelope! Looks like a great day at the tracks!!!👍✌️
Thanks ! Originally there was a whole fleet of 'Thunderbirds' with names from the TV show. I think Richard Branson and Virgin had that.
Great Video again, do you have to let the station staff know your filming trains (at any stations) or do you just go and start filming on the platforms
It varies from area to area. Network Rail request you book in for the stations managed by them. ScotRail ask that you inform the staff. A lot of places either there's no staff anyway or they aren't bothered as long as you stay safe
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thanks for that, but how do you book in? do you do that online or when you get there and just speak to someone? sorry for all the questions
@@AnthonyTravels just speak to the Network Rail reception at places like Glasgow Central or at the booking window - mostly important if you are going through barriers. When I was at Skipton - Northern have barriers - I just waved my camera at the gate attendant and asked if I could take photos.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thanks so much for answering my questions, my channel is about train travel but a lot of people seem to prefer watching the train as well so thinking about doing that as well, I just wasn't sure about rules! thanks again and keep uploading I do enjoy watching when I work from home
Good Stuff.
Thanks
What amazes me is the filthy state of the locomotives! I suppose any cleaning facility they might use has been frozen up recently?
Thanks. Yes any cleaning points will have been frozen I guess
Some great notch eight thrash from the 68s! 🤠
Indeed!
Excellent video Les
Thanks!
Nice to see the weeds are surviving this icy spell. I’m convinced Network Rail send people out to nurture and look after them in the Carlisle area rather than eradicate them. Gives the place the look of a third world railway rather than a premier main line in England.
Maybe £50 grand a year ain’t enough for weeding duties!
Its the microclimate in the station.
Excellent video and the 90s are always wonderful to see - what’s the reason for the sudden drop in 88 diagrams?
Thanks. All I've heard are the economics given the high cost of electricity and their ability to get the intermodals up Shap and Beattock.
Another great video well done Leslie but I do think you’re mad going out in the cold weather ATB Bernie
Thanks Bernie. What would life be if you couldn't be a bit mad!
@@LeslieGilpinRailways boring lol
Cheers Les, am I right in thinking that LSL are opening a Depot at Upperby?.
Indeed they are. I showed the site a month or so back. Not sure if they've broken ground for the shed yet
Guaranteed the 70's are always value for money!
I used to have no opinion on them but now quite looking forward to watching them go by. Sometimes four different 70s per day
Wonderful video
Thanks!
I’m desperate to know which route the log trains take…Settle, or WCML.
Usually the logs would go via the S&C but since the Petteril Bridge derailment and since that way reopened they've been going down the WCML, often from one loop to the next.
Boa noite lelie ótimo video excelente trem lindo
Thanks!
good, RMT solidarity!
Seems like it
@@LeslieGilpinRailways pie eating, already?
They need to give Avenger and Pride of The North a wash
They do but they've been used pretty intensively since the thaw
How is the derailment site getting on
One the bridge had been strengthened the line reopened on 7 Dec. look at my vid from 10 December.
The service today was an absolute joke, no strike just cancellations on every route..Every year it’s the same excuses, it really is an embarrassment, please bring back British Rail 🇬🇧
They aren't managing lots of issues there
I seem to recall that British Rail had similar problems!
12:42 Lmao
:)
Come take a seat in my office....
lol thanks for watching
