    Nice! I wrote a few Amiga games back in the 80's and I still make Tracker music for fun, so it's awesome to see the Amiga emulation revival come to Raspberry Pi! It makes me want to fire up the old DevPak Assembler and start making the blitter do clever tricks again.

    Awesome video thanks Dan! As you know rveryone is really jumping onto Raspberry Pi Amigas now in the community. Its a great way also to ressurect an old dead Amiga by replacing the board with a Raspberry Pi and then using a Keyrah V2 Interface to use a real Amiga keyboard with the Pi. People are now creating Pimigas (including myself!) usually out of Amiga 600 cases. Which essentially turns a dead Amiga 600 into a high end Amiga system far faster than the real thing with full internet access via wifi. Your tutorial is a great start for it!
    One thing you did miss out, which I think is quite important, is the option to stop the emulator starting automatically. So you literally turn the raspberry pi on, and it'll boot to the kickstart screen or boot into Workbench. Some people have also managed to modify amibian to remove linux loading and boot screens to to give a real authentic Amiga feel.
    When I've finished my Pi Amiga I'll post some pictures and a blog on the retro FPGA group on Facebook.
    Cheers again from a fan!

    Many thanks for the video. I had an Amiga from 1987-1993 before migrating to a 486 PC. After a long break I got back into the Amiga via Cloanto's Amiga Forever 2014 and the later upgrade to the 2016 version. So, after watching your excellent video and after a little bit of effort I now have a Raspberry Pi 3 running Amibian, KS 3.1 and Classic WB 3 with WHDLoad to get a bit of Amiga gaming nostalgia.

    This Nexus 7 demo, im so glad i did the WinUAE Amiga configs. Found a ADF version of the Andromeda Nexus demo at 6 am.
    Demo did not wont to run on a A1200, but the A4000 with scanlines done the magic, awesome demo! Andromeda was always
    in my fovour. After some sleep will get some more newer demos :) I fire up the emulator every now and then, the real deal A500
    is still by me..... These were some nice moments i had with this outstanding machine! THX for sharing M8.

    Had problems with installing to a new Raspberry Pi 4 so I contacted Gunnar (Amibian site) and found it will not work on Raspberry Pi v4 - here is his answer.
    it only works on raspberry pi until 3b.
    Then just ignore the messages about the card not being formatted after you flash, it comes because after flashing it is formatted to a file system that is not supported by your home PC.
    So thank you Gunnar Kristjánsson from amibian. So close for me and yet so far, I will get there eventually. So nice video Dan and keep going with the Amiga
    Keep safe & thanks all

    hey Dan thanks for this. Surprisingly despite you saying so there are zero instruction guides on RUclips for setting these systems up. Ideally I'd like to see you show us how to set up a classic A500 in detail as well as how to configure a workbench for both the A500 and A1200. Also alternative configuration for the A1200 to the max and finally how to get WHDLoad running on the Workbench too. I know you're a busy guy but right now you're our only hope. Thanks Lawbag

    Great video mate!
    As for the kickstarts there is another way, you can grab your own roms if you have a real amiga.
    There is a utility on aminet called grabkick, you just run it and dumps the rom on your hard disk.
    If you don't have an HD Amiga, you can make a bootable floppy or run it via Workbench disk.
    Copy the grabkick file on an empty disk and it will be enough free room to dump it in the same disk.

    Hi all.... I have just tried this on my old Raspberry Pi 1 model B+.... I can confirm that the emulation works fine on these once overclocked however due to the lack of processing power i was unable to play games (It simply crashes)... It has been fine to a degree playing some of the old Amiga Demos but it does slow down at the more demanding sequences and causes the music to slow and crackle like you've just put your hand on a old record that's playing.... All that said, its been great to see one of my favorite Amiga demos that iv'e not seen for 23 years :)

    Has got a lot better in recent years. On the 400 now it’s supported finally. I tried half a dozen games last night. Each one played without needing a single trip to the config screen.
    Top Tip.if you put every multi disk game in its own folder, more often than not you don’t need to click anything to swap disks.

    Dan! I've been setting up my amibian. I'm going to do some digging on the problem I'm having but thought I'd ask here in case it's an obvious thing....
    I've got the kick-start rom path and the floppy path definately pointing to the correct files. I've set the amibian settings as you have them in your vid... But when I hit start I just get a blank screen. No game I try will load. I've also tried all the kickstart roms.
    Ever experienced that issue?
    I'll go hunting on the forums.... I'm so close but feel so far from getting that amiga experience on my pi!

    Dan thank you for this tutorial. I have a few questions for you, Im not that interested in games though. 1) where can i find a pre-made image of the one with the whole desktop etc with the whd load. 2) I have the amiga forever software.. whats the difference in using that on the PC instead of going to the raspberry pi? I do have 2 raspberry pies but it seems more difficult than just doing it on the pc. 3) if I do run the desktop image on the raspberry with workbench 3.9 will it work like a amiga 4000? Sorry I am more or less novice to the amiga even though I bought a used amiga 1200 in good shape etc... I never had the time to fiddle with it! thanks !

    • @billant2
      @billant2 6 лет назад

      When you say "almost 100%" which or what type of apps do not work properly, and what happens, do they crash or just don't run at all. How are multi disk games handled? Thanks.

    • @Guybrush14
      @Guybrush14 6 лет назад +1

      Don't know exactly, I read some demos won't work properly, but that was a few years ago. I think winuae is so advanced now your won't know the difference. Perhaps you give it a try, you only need some kickstart files. Switching Floppys is as easy as in the pie emulator. The program looks also very similar in usage.

    • @billant2
      @billant2 6 лет назад

      You mean as easy to switch foloppies as on the RasberryPi emulator? Why would one bother the RasberryPi hardware when you can emulate it just as well on a PC? hmmm... sorry about all the questions I'm just trying to decide which one to go with.

    Hi Dan. I have set up my Pi 3 using the Amibian distro like yourself, however I am convinced the audio is slightly late and no matter what I try I cannot get the sound in perfect sync. This is mostly obvious in one of my favorite games, Turrican. When firing there is a clear delay before the sound is heard. I fired it up on my real Amiga 500 machine to make sure that it wasn't just my OCD working overtime but sadly it isn't and the delay really spoils it for me lol.
    Did you notice anything like that?

  • @elbiggus
    @elbiggus 8 лет назад

    I'm not sure what the current state of it is as it's been a **long** time since I went anywhere near the source, but Fast Copper used a much more streamlined Copper emulation core at the expense of compatibility: collision detection and list timings suffered, potentially leading to anything from broken gameplay to the emulated machine crashing, but in the early days many PCs struggled to run the emulation at a decent speed so it was a useful tradeoff; moderns PCs generally have more than enough grunt to do it "properly" so on the whole there's no need to use the Fast mode, but I've not tried it on the Pi so possibly it's still a "leave it on Fast if it works" thing.
    As for the Blitter, setting it to "immediate" is less accurate but *much* quicker -- I'm a little rusty on the technical details, but IIRC it performs the blit operation "outside" of the emulation so anything that relies on bus contention for timing or makes assumptions based on when a blit operation will start and end will run into problems. If you're running Workbench (particularly if you've increased colour depth) or OS-friendly applications it's completely safe, but for games there's the same caveat as the Copper: you'll get better speed, but it may not work.
    (I can't tell if the option is gone or whether it's just not exposed in the UI, but there used to be a "use cycle-exact CPU and blitter timings" choice which let you have the fast blitting but solved the timing issues; it may be available by manually editing config files, in which case it's another thing to consider when trying to balance performance and stability.)

    Frankly all that copyright nonsense is overwritten by common sense 1.0 - I am all for copyrights etc. but for a system that doesn't exist anymore and isn't marketed anywhere ? no. Of course this doesn't extend to the ROMs which are still available at a fair price and that should not only be respected but rewarded ! But being forced to buy ridiculously overpriced fourth hand software from ebay ? nope.

      ya, but 'fair price' is also subjective. These days, just about anything under copyright will, and can. be argued.

      That's the correct one, there is no model A Pi3, it's just named "model B" as the form factor is the same as as the Pi 2 and 1 Model B iirc.

    Great tutorial Dan, I still have my Amiga 2000 which hasn't been used for over 20 years due to my monitor dying. Might have to try this. Do you have tutorials howto copy original disks? I assume it needs to be done on an original Amiga. Any way to get around this legally as mentioned I don't have a monitor and don't want to get extra hardware to hook up a modern monitor.

    Hi Dan, Thanks for this. How many controllers can we use for this? Is it possible to connect 3 usb joysticks?

    Is it possible to use music composing software like trackers with it? I assume that yes if using just amiga samples, but how about MIDI?
    I used to do music with A500 which had MIDI IO box. I did pretty much nothing else with the whole amiga but music and I got so used to OctaMED Pro v4 tracker that it was hard to learn any other sequencer after that. All kb shortcuts were deeply programmed to my subconscious. :D
    Now when old amigas have their retro boosted prices it might be cheaper to put up similar studio as back then in ninetees, but with Raspberry Pi.
    I'm not familiar with it yet but I have used virtualization tech from hyper-v and vm-ware in past years so I guess it wouldnt be impossible for me to learn how to setup this.
    Although, I don't go there if it's not possible to get MIDI work with HW synths.
    So.. is it possible to use MIDI from this kind of virtual Amiga setup? Anyone? :)

    Dan, this video is awesome. The first one i've found that someone who loved his Amiga, but doesn't know every part of it's insides can understand! :) That said, a week later i'm still looking for these "loads" of tutorials on the next steps and i'm usually good on finding whatever corner of the interwebs i need. I'm just wanting to get this gorgeous pi-miga up and running with workbench and those whd folders but i'm struggling, could you point us in a direction? Thanks :)

      I really should have waited until you got to that part of the video where you mention whdload before posting that comment...
