A Room with a View is one of my favorite novel--it is delightful!

As for the Sorrows of young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, I can say it's a great tale. I read it in 2023. It has an interesting composition, as it is a compilation of letters. Therefore, it is possible to really get to understand the protagonist's emotions and how they develop over the course of the story, since the letters are dated. The received letters, one has to imagine.

I read 'And Quiet Flows the Don' in 2024. But what you may not know is that it's only half of the story! The second half is called 'The Don Flows Home to the Sea' and it's another 800+ pages. I didn't quite realize that when I started the first part. I enjoyed the whole epic by reading it over many months. There's also a good audiobook version of the first part. Cheers!

We’re TBR buddies several times/tomes over: The Brothers Karamazov (tied with Middlemarch, War and Peace, and The Tale of Genji for my favorite novel-buckle up), Q, The Eighth Life, and Fathers and Sons are all on my list too (and your 2024 buddy Oblomov).
I’ve read some of your other books on your list: you’re going to have a great year. Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy is terrific. Jude the Obscure is buh-rutal! Vanity Fair is a long but great satire. Native Son made me cry. Invisible Man is a masterpiece too, but you will see how profound Wright’s influence is. And Don Quixote is indeed funny (and should also probably be tied for my favorite novel), but as an adult, I suspect you’ll find that the second half breaks your heart.
I’m excited about a ton of books this year-also being ambitious/tragically hopeful, I suspect-but one I’m especially excited for is Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain. Another is Platonov’s Chevengur. A third is Vollmann’s The Dying Grass, which I spy on your shelf. And then there’s Dostoevsky: I’m actually reading and/or rereading all of him this year alongside Joseph Frank’s five-volume biography of him. A crazy project I decided was “a good idea.” We’ll see if I’m still saying that when I wind up in therapy.
Sounds like we will be kept busy.
And, I saw you were reading 4321! How do you like it? I remember writing to you that it had more heart and a lot less hipster to it than the NY Trilogy.
Happy New Year! Your channel is so much fun and I really appreciate those reading sprint/productivity videos. Sometimes I read along with you for hours!

I felt the same about North and South and am hoping that Wives and Daughters is better. At the end of the day I just thought N&S was ok, but I liked her writing enough to try other books. Nicole, do you keep written or digital lists? I vaguely seem to recall you mentioning digital spreadsheets???

Of my tbr lists or books I own or of what I'm reading? I guess it doesn't matter! I do a combo for all of them. I track my reading, books, and tbr, on The Storygraph, but I also tend to write a lot down (usually all over the place). My hope in 2025 is to just have storygraph and 1 notebook with all my reading/channel stuff in it. Hope that answers your question!

How many people in the world have read Clarissa in High School? What a feat!

lol. No idea. Even my English teacher was like "WHY??". (Then again he was biased toward Victorian Lit).
