Product Managers tend to study and align the product with the customers wants and needs (roadmapping for marketing stuff) and the Product Owner under the Product Manager will make sure the product aligns with the product roadmap (developmental stuff). IMO it just seems like another step towards division of labor, but it may be essential considering the rate of development necessary for our times...
