If you use external triggering or sequencing the RZ-1 is Velocity capable, I don't think the on board pads are Velocity sensitive though... Use an external Sequencer that can put out Velocity and the RZ-1 is a fierce drum tank. The level mixer is a killer when you want a drum sequence with movement. My favorite trick is to pre-sequence the sample parts then leave the sequence running then hand a mic off impromptu and say make a noise... wait for the reaction as the voice is sliced and rhythmically dropped... then slowly add in the drum parts. Also of note is that you can get longer samples by pressing the the sets 1-2 or 3-4 then press the sample record. you still won't get pad length samples but it might be the extra 8th of a second you need to make something work.
Excellent video!!! Well explained, Thanks for explaining the part about the quantizing technology I did not know that and that is why now I understand why the RZ1 sequences sound different to me. The Casio RZ-1 was my first drum machine, also was my first instrument that I bought when I wanted to learn how to make Techno. Because of its ease of used I was able to learn about the concepts of sequencing, Midi and mixing instruments (because of its individual outs). The limitations of the drum machine forced me to be creative and to this day I still have it and even bought a second one. You have 4 sampling banks or you can combine 2 banks to make one longer sample that way leaving you with only 2. Since the drum machine is not velocity sensitive you only have 3 levels of velocity using the accent button, Low, normal and loud. But because of this limitation you can make the drums sound amazing. The memory is real limited so don’t expect to write a whole live set on it. Saving, loading patterns and song is done through an analog cassette interface and you need a special cable for that I was never able to find the cable or the tape recorded that went with it so I wrote everything down on paper to recreated it. The battery will go bad and when it does all memory is lost when powering it down, patterns, songs and samples. Is a great drum machine to sketch out ideas and developing arrangements quickly without losing inspiration. To hear the RZ-1 in action check out the drums in the following track from Yami Bolo & Ruffy & Tuffy : Door Peep. Is from the album Augustos Pablo Rockers International. Throughout the album you can hear the rz-1 ruclips.net/video/pWJdnriZJr4/видео.html
YES Koji Kabuto..Yami bolo!!! I'm always looking to find out which synths/samplers/drums were used in 80s/90s Reggae. Could you recommend any further listening regarding specific instruments pls. Many thanks. One love.
I remember wanting one of these. One of my friends in a rival crew had this one. I remember getting a Korg DDD5 thinking it would sampled like the DDD1 and being so disappointed. LOL
steve poindexter - work that motherf--ker, was a classic, always went down well at the nuthouse in stamford hill... ~bought my brothers RZ1 in 87, still got it!~
I haven't found one for under $350. Vintage is one thing, but that's ridiculous. Everyone of these video's you make on gear skyrockets the price.....>>> Enough already, I would like to make some music too.

It's 8bit not 12 these guys are not experts
This is actually an 8-bit machine..
12 bit iirc. Had one.
Its strange, the internet seems to be split on that one.. I have one too.

Has anyone done any circuit bending to this machine? Any useful resources online to do so? thx
Dexterous Manipulator look here on RUclips. Someone has a video showcasing all the mods, and shares schematics as well.
some people say the sampler is 8-bit
PolaBurrr most people do.

Well if the gear is important to your sound then save up for it.
you only need a computer to make music, everything else is optional
That wouldn't happen to be Declan!!
8bit sound NOT 12...
I made my hottest beats on that machine
This guy is so dead. Sampling into it was the deal - ask Todd Terry ;)
